J. M. Harden Wagon House destroyed by fire

Democratic Advocate, January 28, 1899

The wagon-house of J. M. Harden, on the Nicodemus road, nearReisterstown, was destroyed by fire at an early hour last Saturday morning.

The loss is $1,250 and the insurance $850. Mr. Harden thinksthe building was set on fire by an enemy.

The wagon house contained farming implements and a buggy,all of which were destroyed.

The building was located about 200 feet from Mr. Harden'sdwelling house. The fire was discovered shortly before 2 o'clock by Mrs. Harden,just as the roof of the building fell in with a crash.

About two years ago a son of Mr. Harden shot a man in theleg, who, he alleges, was in the act of setting fire to his father's threshingmachine.

Basket Ball—Dropping in two pointers with regularity, theBlue Ridge College girls' basketball team easily defeated the Westminster HighSchool sextet, 24 to 13 at New Windsor, Friday.

Clever shooting from the floor by Miss Garber and MissMcKinney spelled defeat for the younger lassies, who fought valiantly, butcould not cope with the tight defense of the winners.

Miss Myerly found the net for three neat shots from thefloor, while Miss Jones was a dead shot at the 15-foot line, making good onfour of her five chances.

The winning combination is priming for the next battle,booked for February 1 with the Western Maryland girls at the New Windsor court.

January 28, 1949 Democratic Advocate

Train Wreck At Sykesville - Three Men Injured When A B.& O. Freight Engine Was Derailed; 26 Cars Piled Up—Three trainmen wereseriously scalded by steam Saturday afternoon when a freight train was derailedon the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad At Sykesville and a section of the railpierced the locomotive boiler.

Twenty-six cars of the 73-car train were derailed. Eightcars were overturned and witnesses said that they were "a mass of twistedwreckage.”

Officials of the B. & O. said, that the old main linenow used only for freight traffic, will probably be closed by the wreckageuntil late in the afternoon. According to State police, the three injured menwere riding in the cab of the locomotive at the time of the accident.

Community Reporter Editorial - Is There A GasolineShortage?— With Congress getting its "back up" at last over theenergy crisis, oil companies are being forced to reveal that their storagetanks are overflowing and that they actually have more gasoline on hand than atthis time last year.

Yet, through a foolish and totally unfathomable policy ofthe energy administration, gasoline stations in numbers of localities are beingdenied the amounts of gasoline that customers need to carry out their normaloperations of travel — many times with serious implications to their work andtheir means of earning a livelihood.

There is every evidence that there is enough gasoline topermit normal operation of these stations, but under the monthly quotaestablished they are prevented from receiving what they need to maintain theirbusinesses.

Just what is back of this ridiculous contrived shortage?

Is it, as some suggest, a political maneuver to takepeople's attention off the "watergate" mess? Or is it, as seems muchmore likely, a deliberate attempt to force up prices and give the oil companieslarger profits, in order that the government can collect higher taxes fromthem?

One of the most ambitious, and contentious, issues in Carroll County over the past decade came to a crash landing on Thursday, Jan. 26, as the Board of County Commissioners rejected the $74 million expansion plan for Carroll County Regional Airport in Westminster.

In a 3-2 vote that came after statements by each commissioner, the board directed staff to begin creating a revised master plan for the airport — one that will accommodate only airplanes with small wing spans, classified as C-II aircraft.

A new poll found that 62% of rural respondents favored tighter regulations on septic systems, and 57% favored “limiting the number of septic systems in rural areas.”

The poll of 801 registered voters by Opinion Works in mid-December found statewide support was 72% for tighter septic regulations, and 69% for limiting the number septic systems in the state.

Many Carroll County residents are getting a case of nostalgic Super Bowl fever as they look forward to Sunday's AFC championship contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.

For more than 120 years — since football debuted at then-Western Maryland College on Oct. 31, 1891 — football has been a part of the history of Carroll County.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that since July 1949, Baltimore football teams have held summer practice in Westminster. Names like Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, Alan Ameche, and Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank, just to mention a few, have become an important part of our Carroll County cultural history.

And yes, there is also that quarterback that was cut by the Pittsburg Steelers in 1956.

What was his name? Oh yeah, right. Johnny Unitas.

The 2012 slate of officers for the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No.1 were sworn into office by Steve Wantz, the president of the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association, at the January 5, 2012 monthly company meeting in John Street Quarters at the firehall.

According to the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No.1 website, the administrative officers for 2012 are: President - Robert Cumberland, 1st V.P. - Daniel Plunkert, 2nd V.P. - Matt Crise, Treasurer - Robert Ruby, Asst. Treasurer – Caroline Babylon, Secretary - Matt Davis, Asst. Secretary - Todd Leppert, Members at Large - Marvin Hollinger and James Eckard, Historian - Joe Ebaugh, Asst. Historian - Jim Brown, and Chaplain – Kevin Dayhoff.

The Maryland State Police put the Maryland snow emergencyplan in effect for Carroll County MD at 2 a.m.

The MarylandDepartment of Transportation announced that the Maryland State Police putthe Maryland snow emergency plan in effect at 2 a.m. Saturday morning forCarroll County.

Previously the snow emergency plan went into effect theprevious Friday evening for much of Western Maryland counties: at 11 p.m. for AlleganyCounty; 10:30 p.m. for Garrett County and 11:30 p.m. for Washington County.

According to the department of transportation, the statepolice declare snow emergencies after receiving input from the Maryland StateHighway Administration.

Once the snow emergency has been declared, parking isprohibited on streets and roads that are designated as snow emergency routesand the snow tires, all weather tires and or chains are required for vehiclestraveling on the roadways.

When checked at 2:45 a.m., the NationalWeather Service forecast for Westminster and Carroll County had a “winterweather advisory posted.” “Snow before 4 am, then snow, freezing rain, andsleet. Low around 26. East wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.Total nighttime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Totalnighttime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.”

For Saturday night the weather service was forecastingmostly cloudy skies. But most importantly for Ravens fans, the Sunday forecastsays, “A slight chance of rain, freezing rain, and sleet after noon. Increasingclouds, with a high near 33. East wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is20%.” And later Sunday night, Rain likely, possibly mixed with freezing rain,becoming all rain after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 32. East wind between 3and 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of lessthan a tenth of an inch possible.”

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin and I attendedthe funeral yesterday for Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler. In our officialcapacities, we offered condolences from all Maryland citizens to the family fortheir loss.

Today, at the end of the Senate legislative session, I movedthat the Senate adjourn in memory of Airman 1st Class Seidler as a tribute tothis Maryland Fallen Hero.

Seidler was 24-years-old and lived in Westminster where hegraduated from Westminster High School in 2006.

When he joined the Air Force, he was accepted into the eliteEOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit. He was well-aware of the dangers hefaced - the EOD personnel comprise only 1% of the Air Force but suffer 25% ofthe casualties.

On January 5, 2012, Seidler was part of a military convey of27 vehicles engaged in hostile combat operations in the Helmand Province,Afghanistan. Earlier that day, his unit had defused two IEDs (improvisedexplosive devices) so that the convoy could continue its maneuvers. Tragically,his truck was hit by a third IED that killed Seidler and two other airmen.

This season has marked the 120th anniversary of the football team at McDaniel College.

According to Dr. James Lightner's history of the college, "Fearless and Bold," the first football season at then-Western Maryland College, in 1891, consisted of five games.

"On October 31, 1891, the first WMC football game was played in Westminster" against Pennsylvania College, now known as Gettysburg College.
