Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running trail

Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running trail

November 15, 2013 by Kevin Dayhoff

Yesterday I took a look at running at the Westminster Cemetery on North Church Street in Westminster.

In addition to the trails I discussed here on October 22, 2013, http://westminster.patch.com/groups/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog/p/fall-is-great-for-running-trails-in-carroll-co?yPos=0; I’ve been wondering how many other walking-running trail opportunities in the Carroll County area I have overlooked.

I mean, I walked the blacktop trails at the cemetery marveling at how many times I had visited the historic cemetery and really never considered it as a walking - running trail.

I saw many other walkers and runners. I did not measure any courses. That will be my next step. Although it is in the middle of Westminster, it was amusingly - and amazingly quiet, bucolic and serene. I grabbed a cup of coffee at Birdie's, http://www.birdiescoffee.com/, and really enjoyed a moment or two to myself - in the middle of town. LOL

Meanwhile, I hope to see many of you at the Terry Burk Wakefield Valley Community Trail memorial dedication service and 5K run on Saturday morning, November 16, 2013. Kevin Dayhoff - Eagle Archive: Community's history comes to rest at Westminster Cemetery

On Jan. 24, 1790, a gentleman in our community by the name of Christian Yingling died. His name and his passing are significant, because Yingling's is believed to be the first burial in the historic Westminster Cemetery on Church Street.

It is accepted that the Westminster community started the Westminster Cemetery by utilizing the 1.5-acre grounds surrounding the Union Meeting House in 1790.

In 1864, "the company purchased twelve-and-a-half surrounding acres from the estate of John Fisher (the first Burgess of the City of Westminster) and the cemetery reached its current dimensions," according "Westminster Cemetery, Carroll County Cemeteries, Vol. V, Part III," by the Carroll County Genealogical Society in 2004. The authoritative reference book lists all the burials in the cemetery and includes a brief history.

By working together, our community will be able to maintain this institution beyond another 300 years. If you would like to make a contribution toward the restoration of the William Winchester grave site or for the general maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery, contact the cemetery company president, former Westminster Councilwoman Suzanne Albert, at suzannealbert@comcast.net, or call her at 410-871-1180. The annual Carroll Post 31 American Legion Westminster Memorial Day Parade steps off at 10 a.m. today.  The parade will begin at the west end of town at Monroe Street and continue down Pennsylvania Avenue and go east on Main Street to Church Street; then to the Westminster Cemetery for the memorial service at 11 a.m…

In 1868, the focal point of the cemetery was the Union Meeting House of Westminster.  Since the summer of 1891 the Memorial Day services have been held at a large urn, located on the knoll immediately in view as one enters the cemetery from Church Street…
