January 24, 2016 Sheriff DeWees snow update

January 24, 2016 Sheriff DeWees snow update

A big thank you to Commissioner Steve Wantz and Sheriff DeWees for all your hard work. Much appreciated.

Update: So after a long couple of days things are starting to get back to normal. Commissioner Wantz and I met with the folks at EOC today so we can lift the county state of emergency; which was done at 5 PM.

The decision was also made to close county government, the court system, and public schools. Road crews are still actively working to get roadways open and are concentrating all their efforts on doing that. As a result, other county complexes and school parking lots and facilities have not been touched, making it difficult to open all other county business tomorrow.

The county and I appreciate everyone staying off the roadways during this event, which gave road crews a chance to get the majority open.

We've had very few incidents throughout the county but have unfortunately had a few fatalities from exhaustion do to shoveling snow. A wise man once said "How would you eat an elephant ... one bite at a time." Think about the monumental task of shoveling snow the same way. Just do a little at a time and take a break.

Lastly, I have nothing but high praise for all the folks that worked the county emergency operations center, the county & state road crews, public works, 911 Center, National Guard and all of our law enforcement partners; and my patrol & correctional deputies for how they've handled this event. I'm very proud to be the sheriff and am grateful to have such dedicated people to work with.

I've been doing this stuff for 45 years and I have a heavy 4-wheel drive truck and even I have just stayed home. This stuff is for the young responders... Some days I feel my age. Some days I know my age.”
