Westminster Md. - Last month, on September 13, 2017, Carroll Lutheran Village held a tree planting ceremony on the Mission Square near the center of the sprawling retirement complex, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation which began in Germany in 1517.

The Rev. William G. Gohl, Bishop of the DE-MD Synod of the ELCA officiated, and was joined by The Rev. Dr. Rev. Fred Eckhardt, Carroll Lutheran Village Chaplain Jimmie Schwartz, Deacon Laura Heller, the coordinator of the Creation Care Ministry of the Delaware-Maryland Synod, Carroll Lutheran Village Associate Chaplain Deacon Don Myers, and Justin Durboraw, local funeral director, Gettysburg Lutheran College roommate of Bishop Gohl.

At the ceremony, Carroll Lutheran Village resident Phil Hooks played an original musical composition on the Alpine Horn, titled, “Fanfare to a Tree.” Later in the program, Hooks played Sousa marches while folks in attendance enjoyed a root beer and soft pretzel reception.
