The Historical Society of Carroll County requests applications for scholarship honoring Mike Eaton

The Historical Society of Carroll County requests applications for scholarship honoring Mike Eaton

April 1, 2015

The purpose of this scholarship is to honor the memory of William Granville “Mike” Eaton, English teacher at Westminster High School from 1935 to 1971.

The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Westminster High School, based on an essay about that student’s most influential teacher.  That teacher will also be recognized through this scholarship.

The Historical Society of Carroll County has dedicated a room at Cockey’s Tavern to Mr. Eaton, the room in which he lived for over 25 years.  Funds and memories are being collected to continue to recognize Mr. Eaton at the Historical Society and through this scholarship.

William Granville “Mike” Eaton is one of many revered teachers in Carroll County history. From 1935 to 1971, he taught; his students wrote, listened and learned. He brought panache to his classroom with his deck of index cards from which he pulled the targets of his well-placed questions.  The cards brought their share of insecurity to the ill-prepared, but Westminster High School seniors began to discover something. Shakespeare wasn’t so bad after all.  Mr. Eaton commanded the classroom. Heading the Drama Club at Westminster High School, he also commanded excellence in theatrical offerings.

Students influenced by him include doctors, teachers, lawyers, artists, business and political leaders and an Oscar-winning playwright.   Memories about Mr. Eaton have been sent to the Historical Society from all over the world including California, Broadway, Canada and Germany.

Many memories of Mr. Eaton include his insistence on weekly essays, vocabulary drills and memorization of classics including Hamlet and Chaucer.  He also directed plays of all sorts from the classics to the Key Club “Follies”.  His over-riding traits were his personal interest in his students and his expectation of excellence.

The Historical Society of Carroll County is pleased to honor Mr. Eaton through this scholarship.  Westminster High School students can pick up an application in the Guidance Office.  Applications

February 5, 1971: Carroll County Maryland Board of Commissioners meet with Town Officials

January 15, 2015 update: I noticed today that the Carroll County Commissioners scheduled a meeting today with the Carroll County Mayors: “Thursday ~ January 15, 2015 7:00 p.m. Joint Board of County Commissioners/Mayors Meeting County Office Building ~ Reagan Room Commissioners Howard, Wantz, Weaver, Frazier & Rothschild”

I would have like to have attended but got behind… Anyway it reminded me of this news brief from February 5, 1971…. If I am not mistaken – I attended this meeting… The commissioners were G. Herbert Rice, Norman Graham, and John Meyer.

Commissioners Meet With Town Officials - The County Commissioners of Carroll County during the week of January 18th scheduled a meeting with the Mayors and Representatives of the incorporated towns of Carroll County to discuss several matters pertaining to the two general governmental units within the county.

Included in the discussions were procedures which could be implemented by town and county in establishing coordination between planning and zoning programs, the development and implementation of the county wide water and sewer plan and cooperation in further studies involving the financing of facilities of joint concern within and without the incorporated area.

General agreement was expressed at the meeting that periodic meetings should be scheduled and that the programs proposed would be given further study, and discussion would be continued at such further meetings.

A collection of articles by Kevin E. Dayhoff published in Patch over the years… Retrieved on October 28, 2014

Readers had been saying recently that they have been unable to easily find my content on the Westminster Patch web site http://patch.com/maryland/westminster or http://patch.com/maryland/westminster/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog in recent months. I could not find it either. I had to do a search on “Dayhoff Patch” to find it…. Here are the results…

KEVIN EARL DAYHOFF

In 2006, he was recognized by George Washington University for authoring one of the top 12 Maryland and Virginia political websites. He served as the mayor of Westminster from 2001 to 2005 and as a Westminster city councilman from 1999 to 2001. He was a self-employed nursery stock farmer, landscape designer, property management consultant, and freelance technical writer from 1974 to 1999. He served as a statewide elected member of the Maryland Municipal League Board of Directors 2000 to 2005. He is a native of Westminster, Carroll County, MD, where he currently lives. kevindayhoff@gmail.com. www.kevindayhoff.org

Disclosure: Although I do not know when Mrs. Stephan worked at Westminster High School – for some reason, I remember her working there. I attended Westminster High School from 1968 to 1971; so I will be curious if I was in high school when she worked there.

As I grow older, I find that memories from approximately 45-years ago sometimes have lots of cobwebs. However many of my classmates such as George Welty, Ginnie Muse Schoenberger, Ron Zepp and Debbie Soper O'Hara always seem to remember these things better than I do.

This writer also worked at Carroll Gardens in the 1960s, several years after Mrs. Stephan worked there in the 1950s. Yet when I worked at Carroll Gardens almost 10-years after Mrs. Stephan worked there, she was still remembered with fondness for how well she did her job and that she was also very friendly. Everyone liked working with her.

I then farmed from 1974 to 1999. I raised nursery stock and did property management and landscape contracting - and Mrs. Stephan was one of my customers. She was a wonderful customer. She was nice, kind, attentive and friendly and always seemed so appreciative.

Mrs. Stephan was a wonderful asset in our community in so many ways. She will be greatly missed.
