Westminster Firefighters Breathe a Little Easier with New Equipment

Westminster Firefighters Breathe a Little Easier with New Equipment

The Westminster Fire Company relies on fundraising to pay for new equipment.

The Westminster Volunteer Fire Company has recently invested in new breathing apparatus equipment for its firefighters. The investment is not cheap--the total cost is in the ballpark of $85,000--and the department must raise the money to pay for it.
But in the tradition of volunteer fire companies in Carroll County, communities have come to support their first responders in an effort to ensure that firefighters have what they need to do their jobs. This is true of the Westminster Fire Company.
“It takes a lot of money to run a volunteer fire company," said Caroline Babylon, assistant treasurer of the Westminster Volunteer Fire Company. "We really appreciate the support of the Carroll County commissioners and the City of Westminster, but what really makes it work, money-wise, are donations and the support of the public.”
According to Sargent Brian Garbutt, the new breathing apparatus equipment has several upgrades. Not only does it allow firefighters to be tracked in a fire from a central computer, but it also allows people on the outside to communicate with firefighters in a building should they need to evacuate. The central computer can also track how much air an individual firefighter has in his or her tank.

Carroll County MD receives bond bill money By Adam Bednar

Carroll receives bond bill money By Adam Bednar

Posted: Friday, April 16, 2010 By Adam Bednar, Times Staff Writer

Some state dollars are on the way to help pay for capital improvements in Carroll.

The General Assembly amended the state’s Capital Budget Bill to include $150,000 for the Carroll County Agriculture Center.

Sen. Larry Haines, R-District 5, said that he was happy the ag center is receiving state funding this year.

Both the House and Senate each funded $7.5 million in legislative projects for the 2010 session.

According to a list of bond bills being funded, the General Assembly reviewed more than $35 million in requests.

The bond money will be used on capital improvements at the agricultural center, said Caroline Babylon, the center’s treasurer. However, the specific uses haven’t yet been decided by the center’s board, she said.

Carroll Hospital Center also was awarded $700,000 to help pay for creating extra space for Access Carroll on its campus. However, these funds were included in Gov. Martin O’Malley’s capital budget and were not considered a legislative project, said Sen. David Brinkley, R-District 4.

Dinner with my wife

Dinner with my wife

August 10, 2009 - August 13, 2009

http://kevindayhoffart.blogspot.com/2009/08/dinner-with-my-wife.html

Dinner with my wife at Ledo’s. It must have been a mistake that neither Caroline nor I had a meeting last Monday evening and we could actually have dinner together. (On Twitpic here: http://twitpic.com/dftqm)

Of course, we took our child, Mr. Moose.

There were quite a few folks in the restaurant that enjoyed the fact that we took Mr. Moose with us. Mr. Moose has become quite a litmus test about people.

I frequently find it amusing to find folks who do not seem amused with Mr. Moose. For me, it is sort of a test as to who is human and who is not… And yes, I still deny that I am a cylon…q.v. http://tinyurl.com/ovlbrb and http://twitpic.com/8qsyp or http://tinyurl.com/psljze

However, some folks do not get it. Usually an indicator that such folks should get a life.

After a long winter, the annual spring weigh-in is a great opportunity for families in the Carroll County ag community to catch-up and share plans for the Annual Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair.

20070613 Model Ts visiting Westminster on June 19

June 14th, 2007

Westminster Eagle…

I’m looking forward to June 19th, 2007 when the Model Ts visit Westminster.

One of our spring projects has been to get the family’s 1929/1930 Model A out for a drive and get some maintenance accomplished.

As you can see from the picture above – I help my wife take care of work on the car

Anyway – writing for the Westminster Eagle last Wednesday, June 13th, 2007, Kym Byrnes says:

On June 19, the streets of Westminster will be filled with more than 60 Model T Fords as the antique cars, and their owners, journey down Main Street as part of a weeklong summer tour hosted by the Blue & Grey Chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA).

Vernon Keeler of Keymar is a member of the Blue and Grey Chapter, and expects to be on hand with his family's 1926 Model T Roadster pickup.

According to Keeler, the chapter is based in Hagerstown, but has members throughout the region, including his wife, Dottie Keeler, who is the current president.

For the summer tour, though, Model T owners come from as far as Colorado, Arizona, Maine and Florida, and spend the week, June 17-22, traveling to different locales in Maryland.

On Tuesday, June 19, members will travel to Westminster to visit the Wheeler Automotive Museum on Railroad Avenue, arriving at an estimated time of about 10:30 a.m.

[…]

Keeler, who said Model Ts move at about 35 miles per hour…

(Editor’s note: Which seems a bit slow but many folks are unaware that 35 mph was the national speed limit during World War II…)
