Carroll Community College Recognizes Students at Adult Education Ceremony

Carroll Community College Recognizes Students at Adult Education Ceremony

Westminster, Md., - Twenty students in the Adult Education program operated by Carroll Community College (Carroll) will participate in a recognition ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Theater in the Scott Center. This is the third annual ceremony to recognize adults who have completed General Education (GED), National External Diploma Programs (NEDP), and earned their high school diplomas.

College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo and Board of Trustees Chair Barbara Biller will also offer congratulatory remarks. Family and friends of students have been invited to attend the ceremony.

Two student speakers will share their experiences in the program and discuss the importance of receiving their high school diplomas. Peggy Blizzard of Westminster received her diploma in December, 2009 upon passing the GED tests.  Blizzard is the mother of five children and is currently enrolled as a full-time student Carroll Community College.  Denise Miskimon of Manchester completed the National External Diploma Program in September 2010.  Since receiving her diploma, she has begun working at Carroll Hospital Center

“I am pleased to recognize the students who have completed the adult education program successfully,” said College President Dr. Faye Pappalardo. “I expect great things from them in the future and offer the moral support of the college as they move forward.”

"It is so special to have the opportunity to publicly recognize the achievements of our graduates at this event," said Becki Maurio, director of the Adult Education Program.  “This celebration represents the culmination of the hard work and sacrifice of graduates in their commitment to making a better future for themselves and their families.”

Carroll Community College opens three different art exhibits - by Erica Kritt

Carroll Community College opens three different art exhibits

Carroll County Times News Web site http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/

Monday, April 19, 2010 by Erica Kritt

Art took center stage Sunday at Carroll Community College as three art shows opened on campus.

Maggie Ball, visual arts department chairwoman of Carroll Community College, said this was the first time the school had three openings in one day.

[…]

"Steven Dobbin: Reclamation, Variation II," opened in the Scott Center. His work features paint cans.

[…]

In the Great Hall of the college, the artist cooperative Off Track Art, which has gallery space in Westminster, displayed works with a train theme.

While some artists displayed sketches of train tracks, others did jewelry and paper cutouts.

"It challenged each of us to broaden our thinking," Mary Decker, one of the artists in the show, said.

Linda Van Hart, another member, said the Off Track Art exhibit was the center of the exhibitions, bridging the physical space between Dobbin's space and a gallery of student art.

The student art is being exhibited in the Langdon Gallery. Ball said that having the students in with the community artists and Dobbin gives them pride.

Annual Random House Carroll Community College Book Fair article by Bob Allen

New chapter for books, community college By Bob Allen

Random House Book Fair also includes movies

Posted on http://explorecarroll.com on 3/04/09

Steven Wantz, executive director of the Carroll Community College Foundation, describes the Random House Book Fair, held on the Westminster college campus for the past 11 years, as both a fund-raising and a friend-raising event.

"Over the past 12 years, it has raised over $200,000," Wantz said of the fair, which takes place Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7.

Proceeds from the two-day fair provide scholarships and financial aid to the college's students. In recent years, the fair has drawn about 3,500 people to the campus.

"It's an opportunity for people who have never been on our campus -- or who don't get here very often — to come out and get a peek at an institution that our county commissioners have described as 'the gem of Carroll County,' " Wantz said.

"People can come out and see what's changed and what's new here," he added. "Elements of the book fair (see related article "Books are back in town" for full schedule) are spread throughout the campus, so they get to see what's going on around the college."

Wantz said that in the past five or six years, he and his colleagues at the foundation have gone to great lengths to make the fair a family-oriented event. The Saturday schedule, for example, features a children's activities area ($2), and free events including story times, science presentations and even free children's books, while supplies last.

The emphasis, he said, is "creating a passion for reading in young people."

"There are so many activities this year for young families that you'll need at least a couple of hours to experience the whole thing," he added.

"We're hoping that at this point of the winter, people are fed up with being stuck at home and will come spend the day with us," Wantz said.

In recent years, one of the fair's most successful draws is the Friday night movie at the college's Scott Theater. This year, the Walt Disney movie "Bolt," will be featured — twice.

"We actually sold out and had to turn people away from the movie for the past two years," Wantz recalled. "So this year, we're having two showings, one at 4 p.m. and another at 7 p.m.

"Also, 'Bolt' isn't out yet on DVD, so you can come out to the college and still see it on the big screen," he added.

Wantz said it's yet another barometer of the book fair's appeal that many authors and vendors return year after year.

One of these is John Hoffert, a Hanover, Pa., resident who has written several thrillers, including "The Zero Factor," "Aphrodite's Redemption" and "The Time of Reckoning" — part of what he calls "The Lion" Series.

Hoffert has rented a table and been selling and signing copies of his books at the fair every year for the past five, and he'll be back again this year.

"It's a really good venue, and ... they don't charge vendors an exorbitant up-front fee," said Hoffert, who hopes to finish the latest novel in the Lion Series, "Pyrrhic Victory: The Lion's Wrath," later this year. (For an excerpt, visit
www.JohnHoffert.com.)

"As book fairs go, it's just the right size," he added. "I was at a really big book fair in Philadelphia not too long ago, and there were hoards of people, but most of them had come to see the big-name writers. Independents like me really did get lost in the shuffle.

"It's definitely much friendlier — and much more manageable," he said.

Carroll Community College Offers Adult Education

for County Residents

Carroll Community College (Carroll) has received a grant from the Maryland State Department of Education to provide adult education programs to county residents. The grant marks the beginning of a transition for educating adult learners. For the past 30 years, adult education programs were provided by Carroll County Public Schools. For the first time, the community college will provide oversight of adult education.

The program will be housed and administered by staff from Carroll Community College at the Business and Employment Resource Center at 224 North Center Street in Westminster.

Karen Merkle, vice president of Continuing Education and Training, said the program is a good fit for the community college. "Our primary mission is to serve adults. By offering this program, we are serving a very important need," Merkle said.

"Learners in adult education improve their academic skills while enhancing their life skills," said Becki Maurio, director of the Adult Education Program at Carroll. "Lessons present material in a meaningful way. For example, math problems might be based upon the measurements that construction workers do or the calculations which determine a child's grade average. Reading local newspaper articles and writing letters to local officials or potential employers improve basic literacy skills."

"Carroll Community College will provide not only an adult learning environment in which learners can thrive, but also the bridges to post-secondary education and career training which so many graduates find are necessary to compete in today's job market," Maurio said.

GED Preparation

GED Preparation helps students who have not yet earned a high school diploma to improve the basic skills they need at work, home, and in life.

Classes are small and provide instruction in reading, writing, math, and workplace skills. Classes also help students prepare for the five areas of the GED exam.  These areas include reading, writing, social studies, science, and math.

Registration sessions start students on the right foot. Students learn about the program and take placement tests. Advisors meet with students to recommend classes based on skills and schedules. Students can also review and brush-up on skills by taking practice GED tests.

Once students pass the GED, the diploma issued by the Maryland State Department of Education is accepted by colleges and universities. Some colleges may require additional admissions standards.

External Diploma Program

The External Diploma Program (EDP) is a method for earning a high school diploma that is designed for mature adults who have learned life skills at work, at home, and in the community. The program evaluates students not just on "book knowledge," but on life skills including:

Reading

Writing

Mathematics

Oral Communication

Critical Thinking

Occupational Awareness

Participants are asked to demonstrate high school-level skills in real-life situations. Some examples include reading a map, writing a letter to a potential employer, figuring out loan interest, comparison shopping, showing skills from a trade or occupation, and demonstrating home management experience.

Information sessions are held year-round, free of charge. At the information session, potential students will learn more about the program. At that time, skills will be assessed.

What are the advantages of the External Diploma  Program? Because the program is designed especially for adults, the External Diploma Program is:

 Based on life skills

Self-paced-most participants graduate in six to ten months

Conducted weekly through one-on-one appointments you schedule with your assessor

Not classroom-based

Combination of take home assignments and written and oral assessments at center locations

The diploma issued by the Maryland State Department of Education is accepted by colleges and universities. Some colleges may require you to meet additional admissions standards.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

What is ESOL? ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages . ESOL classes for adults are part of the adult education program and meet at various locations throughout Carroll County with instructors from the community college.

ESOL students practice reading, writing, and speaking skills through real-life contexts. For example, a beginning class was improving its English by practicing the skills needed to find a job. Lessons included reading newspaper ads, role-playing phone conversations with prospective employers, and talking about how to prepare for a job interview. Another class recently finished a unit on housing. Students compared apartment ads, interpreted abbreviations and security deposit requirements, and determined which option would be best for their family.

In past years, ESOL students have come from up to 30 different countries. Some of the most common languages are Spanish, Arabic, and Russian.
