Red Maryland - Richard E. Vatz: The Jessamy-Bernstein Debate: Substance to Bernstein; Style to Bernstein; Penalty Points Against Jessamy
FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 2010
The Jessamy-Bernstein Debate: Substance to Bernstein; Style to Bernstein; Penalty Points Against Jessamy – Likely Primary Election Winner: Jessamy
The August 12 debate between Patricia Jessamy and Gregg Bernstein on WYPR’s “Midday with Dan Rodricks” tells us a lot about political debates, and it also tells us a lot about the principals and their principles in the current race for City State’s Attorney in the Democratic primary.
When candidates have an unfriendly debate filled with unpleasant, personal attacks, the debate tends to be reported as generally nasty, with the implication being that “there is no love lost between these two,” or, in this case, described as their “frequently trading barbs,” in an otherwise excellent analysis in The Baltimore Sun.
The fact is that sometimes there is a major difference in the candidates in this regard. Yesterday’s ugly debate was one-sidedly nasty, even though both candidates were disdainful of the other... http://redmaryland.blogspot.com/2010/08/jessamy-bernstein-debate-substance-to.html

Commentary: Maryland's economic deterioration is 'progress'? By Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/08/06/AR2010080605931.html

By Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.
Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) often refers to his tenure in Annapolis as one of "progress," implicitly arguing that Maryland is better off today than when he took office.
Nowhere could this argument lack more credibility than on Maryland's economic climate, which is unquestionably less friendly to job creation than it was four years ago.
Consider the evidence: Unemployment in Maryland doubled from 2006 to 2010. Approximately 3,000 small businesses closed on the O'Malley administration's watch last year.
Neighboring Virginia easily outranks Maryland in eight out of 10 categories in CNBC's America's Top States for Business survey, including overall economy, quality of life, business friendliness, transportation and cost of living. Maryland has become a flyover state as businesses like Northrop Grumman move their corporate headquarters and jobs to the other side of the Potomac River. Since 2006, the Tax Foundation has dropped Maryland 26 spots in its ranking of the states' business tax climates.
The causes for Maryland's decline are clear. By passing the largest tax increase in Maryland history before a recession, Gov. O'Malley siphoned sorely needed dollars from job creators and families across the income scale. Second, regulatory agencies began treating small businesses as a source of new fines and tax revenue rather than a source of new jobs. Lastly, government spending in Maryland over the past four years increased by $22 billion compared with the preceding four years. Not surprisingly, a $1.8 billion deficit awaits the next governor and legislature.
As governor, I will redefine "progress" in Maryland by focusing on three priorities. ... [...] .... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/08/06/AR2010080605931.html

MD Senate Republican Slate: Maryland Fails to Provide Timely Ballots to Our Troops
The Senate Republican Caucus has joined with the House Republican Caucus in opposition to the waiver requested by the Maryland State Board of Elections so that ballots do not have to be sent to military and civilian personnel serving overseas in compliance with federal election laws. The full statement follows:
(
"This federal law exists to ensure that those who are fighting to defend our democracy, have the opportunity to participate in it" said House Minority Leader Anthony O'Donnell. "This waiver request is just one more slap in the face to the

The MOVE Act was signed into law by President Obama last October, and requires that states ensure that ballots are sent to military voters serving overseas at least 45 days before the election, due to the unavoidable delays associated with delivery into sometimes dangerous areas.
"If compliance is impossible, according to the Board of Elections, why wasn't the legislature approached about a solution" continued Delegate O'Donnell. "Why wasn't this brought up as an issue until now? Our
In 2005, the Ehrlich administration introduced legislation that would exempt 100% of military retirement income from state income taxes if the retiree had served 20 years of active duty. The legislation was first amended in committee to cut the exemption in half and eliminate the exemption for retired officers, and was then killed. Retired military personnel households spent over $2.5 billion on goods and services in
"Unfortunately, the Democrat leadership has not learned what our neighboring states have known for quite some time, exempting 100% of military retirement income from state income taxes is a tremendous economic stimulus tool. Therefore, in addition to being the right thing to do for those who have sacrificed for all of us, giving a greater tax break to veterans would help to energize our economy and create new jobs in
In the 2010 legislative session, legislation was introduced by the chairman of the Ways and Means committee that prohibits schools from releasing information regarding student scores on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test to military recruiters. This test is developed and maintained by the Department of Defense to measure vocational aptitude of potential enlistees.
"These three issues show a continuing pattern in

Bryan Sears: Change and 'desire to compete' fuel Ehrlich 2010 bid
Former governor back on the stump
By Bryan P. Sears Posted 5/12/10
The sign in Bob Ehrlich's corner office reads, "No Whining."
Four years after his only political loss, the Republican former governor has decided to rejoin the political fray, challenging his political nemesis, Gov. Martin O'Malley.
He announced his intention to run April 7 at a rally in his boyhood home of Arbutus. Since then, he has criss-crossed the state, most recently speaking at a GOP spring convention in Ocean City.
Just an election cycle ago, Ehrlich was telling listeners of his newly christened radio show that Maryland had changed.

Brian Griffiths’ Justin Ready interview May 21 2008
Recently Justin Ready announced that he is running for House of Delegates for Carroll County. On Wednesday, May 21, 2008, Brian Griffiths interviewed Mr. Ready “The Justin Ready Interview”: http://blog.briangriffiths.com/2008/05/justin-ready-interveiw.html
~~~~~~
I had the opportunity to interview via email our new State GOP Executive Director Justin Ready. Here is the full Q&A, and it provides a lot of insight into Justin's view on our current situation here in Maryland, where we go for the rest of 2008, and how our party is preparing for 2010 and beyond.
I greatly thank Justin for taking the time to do this!
* * * * * *
Brian Griffiths: You've been on the job for a couple of weeks now, how are you adjusting to the new position.
Justin Ready: I am adjusting pretty well, I think. Its still a process of learning more about day to day responsibilities and technical "stuff" while also looking to move the Party forward and take the next, crucial steps in fundraising and grassroots development. No matter how busy things get, it is an absolute privilege to wake up every morning and be able to work to advance the Maryland Republican Party.
[…]
BG:. Despite the party registration numbers, Maryland has a very vibrant conservative blogosphere. How do you think that bloggers can help the party, and how will you try to engage them?
JR: The conservative blogosphere in Maryland is doing a wonderful job of getting information out to activists all over Maryland. The commentary and issue spotlighting that happens on the blogs really encourages our elected officials and lets them know that they are not alone in the fight. With the dominant print media in this state being so left of center, it is vital that we have alternative outlets.
My plan is to be sure we are keeping bloggers in the loop with what we want to do message wise, while respecting their autonomy. It means treating bloggers as allies but not expecting them to be lockstep with us all the time. In addition, I would like to see the conservative blogosphere call attention to our candidates for office and work to drive volunteers and donations toward GOP candidates that are putting their name on the line to help build our party.
Why I'm Running from Justin Ready on Vimeo.
As a small business owner myself, I know the struggle that businesses and working families face just to pay the bills and save a few bucks for the future.
As your Delegate, I'll fight in Annapolis to:
- Pass real tax relief for our families
- Eliminate wasteful spending
- Lighten the load on businesses
As Executive Director of Maryland Republican Party and while serving as staff in the House of Delegates and the State Senate, I fought to put authentic conservative principles into action in practical ways. I will work tirelessly to make a real difference for us in Annapolis.
I'm ready and respectfully, I ask for your vote in the September 14th Republican Primary. Join our campaign by signing up for email updates, making a donation, or following us on Facebook and Twitter.
Let's make Maryland a place where people want to live - not leave!
Sincerely,
Justin Ready Ready to Listen, Ready to Lead!
