Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Westminster

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Westminster

July 4th, 2018.

Just to shake things up a bit, Caroline, Grammy, and I had Popeyes carry-out for dinner on the 4th of July. The place was very busy. Staff was very nice. We enjoyed our dinner. We will go back. There are several things I want to try on the menu. Caroline and I enjoy southern cooking – especially Louisiana – Cajun cooking.

I cannot remember the last time I went to Popeyes. Years ago, when I was in office, then-Hampstead Mayor Haven Shoemaker used to have our executive strategy sessions at Popeyes 3694 in Westminster at the intersection of Rte 140 and Rte 97 – 624 Baltimore Blvd. 410-857-7550.

Although Popeyes has occupied the building for a long time, many years ago, it was the location of a savings and loan called Vermont Federal. Before then it was a service and gas station. I do not recall the name of the gas station.

The other night, Caroline and I were visiting with  friends Charles L Dorm Jr and Emily Willis-Dorm and he was reminiscing that there was a fire there a number of years ago that has to be one of the coldest fires the Westminster Fire Company ever fought. Along with the fire at the Shipley House at the corner of Main and Center Street. Caroline’s Dad always told stories about the fire at Hahn’s Grocery Store at the corner of Bishop Street and East Main Street. Apparently that was a cold fire also. I also think that former Westminster Police Chief Dean Brewer also recalls the fire at the location of Vermont Federal.

Happy 4th

A Massachusetts woman begs people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs

A Massachusetts woman begs people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs

KED - What the article does not mention is that in part, one of the drivers for the precipitous increase in the cost of a ride to the emergency room is “ambulance abuse.” Folks who call an ambulance for unnecessary reasons. These are the folks who have a headache, a running nose or stub their toe and they are calling an ambulance. At the station we call them the “frequent fliers.” More often than not – “frequent fliers” do not pay their ambulance bills – read: the station goes uncompensated for the call; and these folks call a lot. So, who pays for ambulance abuse – we do. All of us do.

Woman begging people not to call ambulance gains national attention
BY ARIS FOLLEY - 07/03/18 03:20 PM EDT

A Massachusetts woman is drawing attention for begging people not to call an ambulance for fear of high hospital costs after she was injured in a subway accident.

Video of the woman from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police (MBTA) Police Department went viral over the weekend. It shows her in apparent agony after her leg was caught in a gap between a train and the platform on Friday.

The 45-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, asked fellow passengers who came to her aid to not call the ambulance. “Do you know how much an ambulance costs?” the injured woman asked one passenger.
The story first picked up traction on Twitter when a Boston Globe reporter posted about the incident after witnessing the aftermath of the accident on Friday.

Time Flies Dayhoff: Fires and general mayhem dominated the April news in days gone by:

“Fires captured the attention of the local newspapers in April many years ago. The American Sentinel reported on April 9, 1898 that a “large coal oil lamp, suspended from the ceiling of the office of Dr. John S. Mathias, this city, broke loose on Wednesday night, fell, exploded and the oil caught fire…”

Maryland State Police are investigating an incident at the Carroll County Regional Airport

Maryland State Police are investigating an incident at the Carroll County Regional Airport tonight that resulted in a plane coming off of the runway. https://trib.al/NPt5NRF

Maryland State Police are investigating an incident at the Carroll County Regional Airport that resulted in a plane coming off of the runway, Cpl. Jordan Snedeker confirmed Thursday night.

At 8:21 p.m., the emergency communications center was alerted to a “small plane crash,” Westminster Volunteer Fire Company public information officer Kevin Dayhoff said. Multiple units from Westminster responded, he said.

Upon arrival, they located a small plane off of the runway and occupants were out of the plane, Dayhoff said.

There were no injuries, he added.

At about 9:10 p.m., Snedeker said police believe something happened while the plane was landing, causing it to come off the runway and into the grass. Police don’t yet know the type of plane or how many people were inside, Snedeker said.

Maryland State Police will be investigating to find out what happened and what caused the incident, he said.

Westminster Fire Department responds to accident on Route 140

Westminster Fire Department responds to a serious motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 140 and Englar Road that snarled traffic for several hours Saturday

April 21, 2018 by Westminster Fire Department PIO and Chaplain Kevin Dayhoff

A serious motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 140 and Englar Road snarled traffic for several hours Saturday evening just outside of Westminster.

On Sat., April 21, 2018, at approximately 8:30 in the evening, units from the Westminster Fire Department, Westminster City Police, and the Maryland State Police responded to a call for a two-vehicle head-on vehicle collision at the intersection of Englar Road and Route 140 – Baltimore Blvd.

Emergency units responded quickly to the scene. Upon arrival, Westminster Fire Department Lt. Guy Garheart found a two-vehicle motor vehicle accident in the middle of the intersection. A Taneytown police officer on his way to work had happened upon the scene and was assisting the response. Although there was significant property damage to both vehicles, fortunately no-one was injured seriously in the accident.

And fortunately, no first responders - police officers, EMS providers or firefighters were hurt. This, in spite of a series of several serious incidents in which drivers drove around the cones and flares at traffic control points – and through the accident scene, in order to hasten their travels - directly endangering the lives of the first responders.

The accident remains under investigation.

Firefighters quick to extinguish flames in Westminster house fire

A Westminster home was damaged following a fire Thursday evening.

The call for service went out just after 6 p.m., and firefighters from Westminster, Reese, New Windsor, and Pleasant Valley companies responded to the residence in the 600 block of Spring Meadow Drive.

Upon arrival, responders observed smoke showing from the single-family dwelling, according to Kevin Dayhoff, spokesman and chaplain for the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department.

Westminster initiated an interior attack, and the fire was immediately extinguished, he said. Significant damage to the structure was observed.

No injuries were reported. Family is assisting the displaced occupants.

The incident remains under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The Westminster Volunteer Fire Department asks that residents take special care with fire safety.

“Baltimore Gas and Electric today announced that it is awarding $325,000 in emergency response and safety grants to 65 nonprofit emergency response and public safety organizations in 10 Maryland counties and Baltimore City as part of its Emergency Response and Safety Grant program. There were 19 first-time award recipients. BGE will hold an event in early 2016 to formally recognize all of the organizations being awarded grant funding.

“‘BGE is proud to once again give back to nonprofit public safety and emergency response organizations who selflessly give their time and energy to maintain safety in the communities that we serve,’ said Valencia A. McClure, Director of Communications and Corporate Relations for BGE. “This grant funding will allow these agencies to purchase equipment, and support programs, and services that are vital to their preparedness and the overall safety of our community.’

“BGE’s Emergency Response and Safety Grant program, now in its fourth year, is an integral part of BGE’s continued commitment to supporting safety and reliability while also enhancing the communities it serves. It supports nonprofit emergency response and public safety organizations by providing funding that is vital to their success. Some of this year’s grants will assist agencies in purchasing items such as thermal imaging cameras, GPS systems, smoke alarms, portable radios and funding emergency preparedness drills and equipment. To date, BGE has provided over $1 million to 194 emergency response organizations, who share BGE’s commitment to the safety of central Maryland residents…”

[…]

BGE encourages eligible 501c3 organizations that respond to the community’s needs during emergencies to apply for grants of up to $10,000 each. Grant applications are available online at bge.com/emergencyrespondersgrant each September through the end of October.

“BGE presented $310,000 to last year’s 48 grant recipients. A number of grant recipients spoke about how they use the grants in this brief video. In addition to supporting the emergency responder community in Maryland, BGE provides training for fire, police, 911 centers, and emergency management organizations who routinely work around utility equipment. BGE is recognized for its own emergency response record, ranking among the top utilities in the nation for rapid response to gas emergency calls and in working to prevent damages to energy equipment.

“BGE plays an integral role in working with Maryland communities to address economic development, public safety, civic issues, and other initiatives that help enhance our neighborhoods. Through the use of shareholder dollars, BGE supports programs that deliver measurable and sustainable impact in areas of education, environment, community development and arts and culture…

Information retrieved on 3Nov2017 from the BGE website: www.bge.com... This information has been compiled and assembled from multiple sources - all of which I have tried to be very careful to cite. That said - any and all mistakes that may appear in this article are my fault and mine alone.

The Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 and our brothers and sisters in emergency response greatly benefited from the BGE Emergency Safety Grant in 2015. At a time of decreasing financial resources, increasing strain on emergency response resources, as well as increased competition for a constricted revenue flow; this writer felt that it was important to spread the word about an additional resource in the community.

Westminster police officer Robert Bollinger runs his dog, Rex, through a series of demonstrations from biting at Benfer's arm while it was inside a protective sleeve, to hopping in and out of the car before it was smashed by a city work crew; at the inaugural Celebrate Local Heroes Festival at Dutterer's Family Park on August 17th, 2003.

In the background, volunteers from the Westminster Fire Department were waiting in the wings for the opportunity to demonstrate lifesaving techniques by dismantling a car.

According to an article about the event by Carroll County Times writer, Jonathan D. Jones, bringing the fire, police, and other city departments together for recognition is important, Westminster Mayor Kevin Dayhoff said. “I always say public safety is the beginning of community," Dayhoff said. "I think it's an appropriate time to recognize the fire department, the police department, and the street department.”

“The festival was also an opportunity to showcase Dutterer's Family Park, said Lori Graham, who helped organize the event.

“‘There's never been a festival here before, and we thought [the first one] should be fun and community oriented,’ Graham said.”

Police and community partnerships: National Night Out is an annual event designed to strengthen our communities by encouraging neighborhoods to engage in stronger relationships with each other and with their local law enforcement partners. The goal is to heighten crime-prevention awareness, build support and participation in local anti-crime programs, and most importantly, send a message that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. It's also the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors even better. See you there.
