A viewing will be Thursday, Dec. 13, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at Ruck Funeral Home in Towson and a Memorial Service will be held Friday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. at Towson UMC, 501 Hampton Lane in Towson. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the very popular former pastor of the Westminster United Methodist Church, Rev. John Paul Buchheister.

Rev. Buchheister was the pastor here in Westminster from 1964 to 1971, the father of Claire Buchheister Holmes and the father-in-law to Jake Holmes.

Rev. Buchheister was a wonderful pastor. He was so important to many of us who lived in a Westminster that is very much, at this point, a bygone era. He led by example, thought word and deed. Many of the important things in life that sustain us to this day, may be traced back to Rev. The Rev. John P. Buchheister, United Methodist district leader

He led churches in Homeland and Perry Hall and was a gifted singer

The Rev. John Paul Buchheister Sr., a retired pastor who had been a United Methodist Church district superintendent, died of cardiac failure Saturday at Oak Crest Village. He was 87 and had lived in Lutherville.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of Harry Buchheister, a chocolate candy and taffy confectioner. He grew up on Wilkens Avenue in Violetville in Southwest Baltimore and was a 1943 graduate of Polytechnic Institute, where he was quarterback of the school's football team.

He joined the Navy and was sent to the University of North Carolina, where he took courses at its preflight school. There he played for the school's football and lacrosse teams. He also played sandlot football for the old Wilkens Athletic Association.

After the war he considered joining the family candy business but instead enrolled at the Westminster Theological Seminary in Westminster. He had earlier organized a men's Bible study class at Violetville Methodist Church.

As a student minister, he served United Methodist congregations at Level in Harford County, where he helped organize a volunteer fire company. When assigned to Perry Hall, he built a new church and helped form a recreation council so his son could play football.

A 1956 article in The Baltimore Sun noted that he led the singing at a Methodist youth meeting sponsored by the Temperance League of Maryland and Delaware.

Eagle Archive: School experience has changed in Carroll, but it still adds up for students

In August, 1971, much of the community was curious as to whether or not the "Carroll County Vocational Technical Center" would open its doors on Sept. 7 to launch its first year of operation.

Today, the school on Washington Road, next to Westminster High School, is known as the Carroll County Career and Technology Center.

The job training and college preparatory classes at the Career and Technology Center vary from business and retail to computer and construction, from engineering and manufacturing to health and transportation.

Terry Lee Jenkins, 59, of Westminster

Terry Lee Jenkins, 59, of Westminster, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 15, 2012, at Carroll Hospital Center.

Born Oct. 23, 1952, in Frederick, he was the son of Jean Grimm Jenkins, of Westminster and the late Nathan Franklin Jenkins. He was the husband of Ethel Black Jenkins, his wife of 39 years.

He was a 1971 graduate of Westminster High School. He was the owner of Nathan F. Jenkins & Son Builders.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Pleasant Valley Lions Club, a past member of the Mayberry Archery Club, and the Carroll County Gun Club. He was one of the original members of Boy Scout Troop 381.

He enjoyed his second home in Ocean Pines and going to the beach.

Surviving, in addition to his mother and wife, are a son, Bruce Jenkins, of Frederick; a grandson, Shawn Nathan Jenkins, of Indian Head; a mother-in-law, Melba F. Black, of Westminster; and aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a father-in-law, Alvin Black; and grandparents Roy and Helen Grimm, and Muriel and Schley Jenkins.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of memorial service, 1 p.m. Thursday at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, with the Rev. Martha Clementson officiating. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St., Westminster, MD. 21157; or to Piney Run Park, 30 Martz Road, Sykesville, MD 21784.

Now's The Time To Rid Property Of Fire Hazards - Spring into action against fire hazards now that Spring Clean-Up time is here, is the advice of the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company.

Trash and rubbish are breeding places for fires. The following is a four-point program for spring clean-up action:

1. Clean out stacks of newspapers and magazines; discard old clothing, mattresses, furniture, lamp shades, draperies, etc., that clutter up the attic, basement and closets.

2. Do the same clean up job in your home workshop. Get rid of shavings, oily rags, old paint, etc.

3. Get after the trash in the garage and remove the dead grass and brush around and near the house.

4. Have your furnace, chimneys, and stoves inspected and cleaned now. Don't wait until fall when you may get caught by the first cold snap. A little "elbow grease" now may save a lot of grief later. And if you have to burn trash, etc., watch it closely so it will not get out of control.

In losing Ravens' camp, Westminster takes hit in pride and profit

Tradition of training camp at college dates to the 1950s Baltimore Colts

Westminster Mayor Kevin Utz, 54, recalls that when he was a young boy living on Bond Street, he and his brother would ride their bikes several blocks to the Baltimore Colts' training camp at then-Western Maryland College to watch their favorite players up close.

The Colts' camp, held in Westminster from 1953 to 1971, "wasn't as plush" as the camps the Baltimore Ravens have held at the school, now McDaniel College, over the past 15 years, he said.

But those summer days tied Westminster, and all of Carroll County, to Baltimore's football team.

Perhaps that's what hurts so much about the Ravens' decision that they won't be back to McDaniel College in 2012, he said.

"It's almost a 50-year tradition that's being broken," said Utz. "That's the sad part about it." ...

Fewer People Moving Here - People are still moving into Carroll county, but not as fast as they used to, according to figures released this week by the county health department.

These statistics show that the rate of migration into the county dropped more than 30 per cent between 1960 and 1969 - from 20.0 to 13.4 per 1,000 of population.

In addition to the rate drop, which would occur naturally as the total population grows, the actual number of persons moving into the county annually has also dropped - by an estimated 100 per year in the same 10-year period.

Dr. James P. Earp, a sociology professor at Western Maryland College and chairman of the county's Economic Development Commission, blamed the trend on a lack of jobs and a shortage of housing.

Democratic Advocate August 16, 1971

Vo Tech School To Open - Despite past delays, the Carroll County Vocational Technical Center will open its doors on schedule September 7 for the first year operation of the new program, a school official said this week.

Frank Mather, administrator of the center, said that all of the school's facilities except for the horticulture area, conference rooms and some lavatories and some equipment will be ready for use on opening day.

Earlier reports indicated the vocational school might not be able to open on time.

"Enough of the school is ready to provide the children with a full day's program," Mather said. No doubt it will present problems," Mather added, "but it's a lot better than leaving the student with a half-day with nothing to do."

The administrator said that in the past few weeks the contractor had put many more men on the job and work was "really moving now."

Junction staff and volunteers October 16, 1971

The staff of Junction on approximately October 16, 1971… According to Yount, “… (Junction) opened it's doors for business in 1971, but there were many of us that helped fix it up when the county gave it to the non-profit organization in 1970. I remember being in there then at age 15 scraping and painting walls. Little did I know that I would be working there someday for nearly 25 years. Here is a picture from 1971 of many of the youth who helped make this project work.”

Junction is a local Westminster Carroll County Maryland private nonprofit agency for substance abuse prevention and outpatient drug treatment. It provides prevention, intervention, and treatment of substance abuse for individuals, their families, and the community through education, counseling, community collaboration, and leadership in Carroll County.

It was incorporated on September 27, 1971. A month after incorporation, on December 6, 1971, it opened its doors in the historic Carroll County Jail on Court Street in Westminster.

January 1, 1971: The latest in the series of efforts to discredit "The Star Spangled Banner"

THE NATIONAL ANTHEM - The latest in the series of efforts to discredit "The Star Spangled Banner" as this country's National Anthem has come from the Artistic Administrator of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington, D. C. George London, a 50-year-old Canadian vocalist who has made a name for himself in the opera world by singing grand opera parts in the Hollywood Bowl, in San Francisco and in Vienna, Austria, and who also sang the title role in "Boris Gudunov," in Moscow, in the U.S. S. R., has given it as his opinion that "The Star Spangled Banner" is "difficult for most people to sing."

Mr. London may be an authority on opera music, but apparently he possesses weak objections to patriotic airs.

"The Star Spangled Banner" is sung by thousands of Americans in patriotic gatherings all over the country, and apparently not too many who have any talent for singing at all have difficulty in handling this number.

Authorities in the type of music which stirs and stimulates the patriotic feelings, such as John Philip Sousa, the "March King," have given it as their opinions that it is an excellent composition, well-adapted not only for singling, but also for marching music.

We have no criticism of Mr. London's ability in his field, but his field is not patriotic musical composition. Irving Berlin, who wrote "God Bless

America

," would be a more acceptable critic in this area.

Millions have grown to love Francis Scott Key's stirring version, and perhaps it is not so much the fact that the music is objectionable as it is that the words were inspired during a British abortive attack on Fort McHenry.

After all Mr. London is a Canadian native, and may still have some feeling for the land of his birth, which has pretty close ties with the British Crown.

Annoying Phone Calls? Chamber Gives Advice

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce has received several complaints recently about annoying phone calls and calls which involve aggressive and bothersome sales techniques, a Chamber press release reported last week.

To deal with calls which are abusive or which involve pranks, the safest course of action starts with positive identification of the caller, the Chamber said. If there is any doubt, ask to return the call which will give you the opportunity to check the number for accuracy.

Most importantly, never, never answer questions of a personal nature unless you are sure of the identity of the caller, the Chamber cautioned.

Remembering Mike Eaton

Kevin E. Dayhoff Almost everyone can reminisce back to the days of their youth and recall the influence of a favorite childhood teacher. For me, I loved school and I have a number of favorite teachers; however, the first among many may very well be my 12th-grade English teacher, William Granville (“Mike”) Eaton.

All students, friends, and colleagues of Mike Eaton are invited to attend a special, progressive event in Cockey’s, 216 East Main Street in Westminster on Sunday, August 22.

There is no charge for attendance but donations will be encouraged.

Attendees should be prepared to share stories and photos and/or to be taped for a “Mike Remembered” DVD to be produced by the Community Media Center.
