“Dayhoff: A German POW camp was located on site of Wakefield Valley golf course during WWII”

“Time Flies,” by Kevin E. Dayhoff January 13, 2017

As far back as 1960s, the idea of building houses in Wakefield Valley has been the topic of divisive and acrimonious debate in our community. Especially since the sprawling development, currently located in the valley, sits on what was once the location of some Carroll County’s best farmland. The current houses next to the proposed 53-house development were built many years ago in spite of bitter opposition from the local community.

This coming Tuesday, January 17, the use of German POWs to do farm work in Carroll County during World War II, will be the topic of the Historical Society of Carroll County’s popular Box Lunch Talk series.

“During World War II, American farms and factories faced a labor shortage. One little- known solution to the problem was the use of German prisoners of war,” according to Historical Society.

As an aside, this same golf course property is currently in the news. Recently several folks have asked about the background to the current discussions about a recent proposal to build 53 houses on a portion of the now defunct Wakefield Valley Golf Course.

The struggle with the constantly changing links and changes with the Baltimore Sun – and the Carroll County Times is real – and at times, quite frustrating.

From June 2004 to October 2016, I worked for the Baltimore Sun. Those columns may be found here: Baltimore Sun Carroll Eagle: http://tinyurl.com/KED-Sun. Beginning on October 9, 2016, I was transferred to the Carroll County Times. These articles may be found here: Carroll County Times: www.tinyurl.com/KED-CCT

As of this morning, before the Box Lunch Talk today at noon at Grace Hall in Grace Lutheran Church, in Westminster – the link worked. Just saying.

The Box lunch Talk was well attended. 150 folks came to hear an excellent and insightful presentation by Jim Shriver. Another great program by the Historical Society of Carroll County.

Nov. 14 5k honors memory of Terry Burk and Sam Case [Eagle Archives]

November 6, 2015 by Kevin E. Dayhoff

On Nov. 14, the Westminster Road Runners Club and Westminster City Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor the annual Terry Burk Sam Case 5K on the Wakefield Valley Trail — better known to older local runners as the Terry Burk Trail.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of Burk, a popular runner and the second generation owner of a family candy store, the Treat Shop in Westminster.

Burk was struck by a car and killed while jogging with friends on Route 97 at Kalten Road on Aug. 10, 1995. He was only 48 years old.

Sam Case was among the original members of the Westminster Road Runners Club… http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-ce-archives-green-space-20151104-story.html

Fall and spring are beautiful times of the year to run, especially trail running.

Fall and spring are beautiful times of the year to run, especially trail running.

By Kevin Dayhoff, October 20, 2013 Westminster Maryland Online, www.kevindayhoff.org
There is nothing like the warmth of a spring run after shivering through long gray days on the road throughout the winter. And of course, the spring flowers and budding lime-green leaves are a welcome relief to long dreary cold winter runs.

However, what can be better than the sights, sounds and smells of autumn leaves. The symphony of the smells and sounds of the rustle of leaves. The kaleidoscope of colors are a welcome distraction to the constant timpani of footsteps.

On a drive through the Carroll County countryside the other day, WTTR was playing “The Mamas and the Papas” 1966 hit song “All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray” on the truck radio; but outside along the road, Mother Nature did not get the memo and was still dabbling with yellows, oranges and brilliant reds in the trees.

This year, the autumnal equinox, the first day of fall, began on September 22, at 4:44 p.m. That’s when the sun is aligned with the equator making days and nights equal in length.

The arrival of fall is a storied event in American history, folklore and tradition; however, one of the more interesting musings comes from Tom Robbins, the author of “Still Life with Woodpecker.”

Robbins wrote, “It was autumn, the springtime of death…”

Okay, well anyway; as old man winter approaches, there is arguably no prettier season in Carroll County than the vibrant tree leaves of fall. I have always preferred running on trails and linear parks as opposed to running along the roads. I have always felt nervous running anywhere near vehicles weighing several tons whizzing and growling by me at fifty miles an hour. In recent years, it only takes a moment of distraction provided by a cell phone or texting behind the wheel and you are flirting with disaster.

I was a friend of the late "Terry" Burk, 48, owner of the family candy business Treat Shop, which was located across the street from the Carroll movie theatre for many years. Burk was killed while running in 1995 with several Westminster Road Runner Club friends on Route 97 at Kalten Road when a car struck him and fellow jogger David W. Herlocker. According to media reports, “Police said the 19-year-old man who was driving the car apparently fell asleep while coming home from work.”

Outside of Carroll County, one of my many favorite places to run is the Queen Anne's Co. Cross Kent Island Trail, which was dedicated Sept. 8 2001 - See more at: http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2013/06/queen-annes-co-cross-kent-island-trail.html#sthash.pBEWkBYO.dpuf

Or the St. Michaels Talbot County Nature Trail, also on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Locally, in Carroll County, for unpaved trails that meander through the woods, Hashawha may have the best trails. Find more information here: http://ccgovernment.carr.org/ccg/recpark/hashawha/.

I have also enjoyed the Union Bridge walking trail, Charlotte's Quest, in Manchester, Maryland, near the Fire Hall & Pool, http://www.charlottesquestnaturecenter.com/, and the Washington Road Community Trail, http://www.wrctrail.org/, that treks around the Westminster High School, Carroll Community College campus just south of Westminster.

In the eastern-half of the county in the Finksburg area, Sandymount Park also has a nice trail. Closer to Reisterstown, in Baltimore County, there is Soldier's Delight, http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/soldiers.html

For a paved linear-park trail, I really like the Wakefield Valley Trail. Planning for the trail had begun in 1994, a year before Burk was killed. The trail was dedicated and developed, in part, as a legacy to Burk.

Meanwhile, according to the Westminster Recreation and Parks website for the trail, “This trail features a 2.1 Mile paved walking trail from Long Valley Road to Uniontown Road. This scenic trail snakes through the pristine Carroll County Countryside offering the chance to view abundant wildlife and scenic overlooks right inside Westminster City! There is parking at Tahoma Farm Boulder Park. The parking lot has 22 spots and 2 handicap spots.

“Be on the lookout for the Wakefield Valley Trail Extension coming soon! It will extend from Uniontown Road to West Main Street, connecting the Trail form Long Valley Road all the way to Downtown Westminster! Location: Long Valley to Uniontown Road Click here for a PDF map of the trail, http://www.westgov.com/recreation/Wakefield_Trail_8.5x11.pdf. News: Wakefield Valley Trail Receives Generous Donation.”

Westminster: No plans to repair Wakefield Fenby Quarry Lime

A “no trespassing” sign rests in front of the lime kiln at the Lime Kiln Interpretive Park, June 1, in Westminster. The historic site suffered a collapsed wall in December (2010) and the city has no immediate plans on repairing the structure.

Posted: Tuesday, June 7, 2011 9:07 am | Updated: 9:12 am, Tue Jun 7, 2011.

By Brett Lake, Advocate Staff Writer

http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/advocate_of_westminster/news/westminster-no-plans-to-repair-lime-kiln/article_312ed0be-9107-11e0-a026-001cc4c03286.html

After looking into grants to pay for Westminster's historic lime kiln which had a wall collapse in December, Director of Recreation and Parks Ron Schroers said chances are repairs won't be happening anytime soon.

The kiln, located near the Wakefield Valley Trail along Tahoma Farm Road, suffered the damage due to years of poor drainage, and Schroers said cost estimates for the repair reached $750,000 to $1 million.

Read more: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/advocate_of_westminster/news/westminster-no-plans-to-repair-lime-kiln/article_312ed0be-9107-11e0-a026-001cc4c03286.html

"We've been looking into it but at this point in time we've come up with no grant match to be able to take care of the rebuilding out there," Schroers said.

For years, the city expected the kiln to collapse and fenced it off before it happened, Schroers said. Now the kiln is seen with collapsed rocks and several "no trespassing" signs surrounding it.

City Administrator Marge Wolf said previous repairs on the kiln were funded through Program Open Space, a state program that acquires outdoor recreation and open space areas for public use, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website, www.dnr.state.md.us.

Wolf said funding from Program Open Space has dwindled through the years and the city simply doesn't have the money to repair the lime kiln at this time, but said it is on the city's list of things to be considered if money became available.

Timmi Pierce, executive director of the historical society of Carroll County, said losing the kiln is like losing a piece of our past.

"Anytime a historical building or site goes down it's a loss to our history," Pierce said.

Pierce said she would like to see the site rebuilt, but acknowledged it isn't likely because of economic times.

According to the city's website, www.westgov.com, the lime kiln was in operation by 1844 and sometime after 1905. The kiln was used to turn limestone into limes by farmers.

The kiln and Fenby Farm Quarry are part of Lime Kiln Interpretive Park, where a boulder park and walking trail exist.

"The area is still alive and there's still historical value," Schroers said. "My thought is to try to preserve what is there and fence it in and secure it until we can figure out future plans for it."
