Change and 'desire to compete' fuel Ehrlich 2010 bid http://tinyurl.com/26ygyac

The sign in Bob Ehrlich's corner office reads, "No Whining."

Four years after his only political loss, the Republican former governor has decided to rejoin the political fray, challenging his political nemesis, Gov. Martin O'Malley.

He announced his intention to run April 7 at a rally in his boyhood home of Arbutus. Since then, he has criss-crossed the state, most recently speaking at a GOP spring convention in Ocean City.

Just an election cycle ago, Ehrlich was telling listeners of his newly christened radio show that Maryland had changed.

Dayhoff: Amedori to run for Maryland lieutenant governor

Today, at 4:30 p.m. on Lawyers’ Mall in Annapolis, Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy will hold a press conference to announce that former Maryland Delegate (R-District 5A, Carroll Co.) Carmen Amedori will join his ticket as his lieutenant governor running mate.

Brian will be joined by Jim Pelura, former Maryland GOP chairman; Charles Lollar, candidate for U.S. Congress; Jerry Walker, candidate for Anne Arundel County Council; and Eric Cary, candidate for State Senate, according to a Murphy campaign press release..

Amedori, who was present at last night’s Westminster Tax Day Tea Party, in the parking lot at Legends Café, on Route 140 was found in the back of the crowd sporting her newly minted “Murphy – Amedori for Maryland (Governor)” signs.

It was earlier on Thursday that word got out that Amedori, who most recently served on the Maryland parole commission member until January, is abandoning her bid for the Republican nomination to oppose U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D) of Baltimore.

She had been appointed to her position on the parole commission by then-Governor Ehrlich, who is now her opponent in the upcoming September 14, Maryland Republican primary.

The buzz at last night’s Tea Party was that Murphy is adding Amedori to the ticket to reach-out to conservative voters in the upcoming primary contest; although with so many Ehrlich supporters in the crowd, no one was willing to speak on the record.

Last night Amedori praised Murphy’s small business credentials noting that it was actually Ehrlich who has been on record as saying that it will take someone with a business background to beat incumbent Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley in this fall’s November general election.

Amedori had previously announced in February that she was going to run to unseat the four-term incumbent, Mikulski, by participating in a crowded Republican primary but recently changed her mind to join the ticket of Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy, as his lieutenant governor.

This latest development is certain to make the summer political season that much more interesting.

Former Governor Ehrlich headlines Westminster Tax Day Tea Party in Westminster

Former Governor Ehrlich headlines Westminster Tax Day Tea Party in Westminster
Former-Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. came to Westminster Thursday evening and spoke for twenty-minutes to a spirited crowd of about 300.

Amedori to join the ticket of Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy, as his lieutenant governor running mate.

April 15, 2010

By Kevin Dayhoff

Billed as the Westminster Tax Day Tea Party, the parking lot at Legends Café, on Route 140 just outside the city limits was the scene of a sea of American and Gadsden, “Don’t Tread on Me,” yellow flags, protest and campaign signs, and political candidates.

The event, organized by “We the People,” was loud and animated, however there were no problems as folks with shirts marked “security” patrolled the crowds and the Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies observed carefully from afar.

As people mingled to music and conversation there were plenty of homemade signs extolling discontent over taxes, President Barack Obama, health care reform, government spending, the national debt and voting incumbents out of office.

At the same time, a line of about 50 Tea Partiers lined Route 140 and waved flags and signs as motorists drive by and added to the cacophony by honking their horns and shouting words of encouragement.

The chair of We the People, Joe Kirby, began warming-up the crowd just after Former-Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. arrived and spoke at some length about the purpose and intent of the rally and the Tea Party movement.

Michelle Jefferson, a Carroll County Commissioner candidate (R-District 3) introduced Ehrlich at 7 p.m.

“It drives me crazy how we are characterized,” lamented Ehrlich after greeting the crowd as he criticized how the Tea Party movement has been treated by the media.

Boos were heard as he noted comments by U.S. Senate President Harry Reid (D-NV) that the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, (D-CA) is from Maryland.

“This (movement) is about workers, taxpayers… It is not a populist movement,” said Ehrlich as he lapsed briefly into a history lesson of the 18th Century Populist movement in the U.S.

“This is organic. There is no leader of this movement. It just rose-up. This is about pro-wealth… I want to leave this country a better place… Government can be excellent. We’re not anti-government. We’re for appropriate government,” Ehrlich extolled.

“This is not about any particular party. This needs to be independent and it shouldn’t be connected to either party,” he continued as talked about the tea Party movement crossing party lines.

“There is a lot of anger out there…,” Ehrlich continued as he asked for a show of hands of the folks in the audience who had never been to a political function before. “We don’t call people names.”

As Ehrlich transitioned from exhorting the virtues of the Tea Parties, into campaigning for the Maryland governor’s office, he advised the crowd that “an Ehrlich bumper sticker increases the value of your car…”

After Ehrlich spoke for 20 minutes, it came time for a number of local candidates to take to the podium to talk with crowd.

One-by-one, folks such as Jefferson, Hampstead Mayor Haven Shoemaker, a newly announced Carroll Commissioner candidate (R-District 2,) Carroll Commissioner candidate, David Jones (R-District 4,) Maryland Delegate Tanya Shewell (R-District 5A,) Justin Ready, a candidate for Maryland delegate (R-District 5A,) took turns at the microphone.

Back in the crowd was also former Maryland Delegate (R-District 5A,) Carmen Amedori sporting her newly minted “Murphy – Amedori for Maryland (Governor)” signs.

It was earlier in the day that word got out that Amedori, who most recently served on the Maryland parole commission member until January, is abandoning her bid for the Republican nomination to oppose U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D) of Baltimore.

She had announced in February that she was going to run to unseat the four-term incumbent, Mikulski, by participating in a crowded Republican primary but recently changed her mind to join the ticket of Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Murphy, as his lieutenant governor.

That latest development is certain to make the summer political season that much more interesting and will be announced in Annapolis on Friday, April 16, 2010, at 4:30 p.m. on Lawyers’ Mall in Annapolis.

After all the speakers had their moment at the podium, the crowd moved-out to join the line of sign and flag wavers along Route 140.

As the shadows grew long and the sun began to set on another April 15 tax filing deadline, the crowd slowly drifted way and began looking forward to a long political summer of discontent.

Amedori Challenges Fellow Republican Candidates To Join Her Petition To Stop Reconciliation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 9, 2010

AMEDORI CHALLENGES FELLOW REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES TO JOIN HER PETITION TO STOP RECONCILIATION

(Westminster, MD) Today, Carmen Amedori, Republican candidate for United States Senate in Maryland, called upon her fellow Republican United States Senate candidates to join her online petition asking for Senator Barbara Mikulski to vote no on reconciliation for Obamacare.

“We need to present a united front on the most pressing issue confronting our state and country right now. And that issue is the forcing down our throats of health care reform. I ask my fellow Republican candidates to join with me on sending a message to the incumbent that she should vote no on reconciliation,” said Amedori.

Yesterday Amedori launched an online petition collecting names of people across the states who also want to encourage Mikulski to vote no on reconciliation. “I am pleased with the results so far, but we still need more people to join this effort. It will be close to impossible to turn the clock back if Obamacare is passed. Even with the House and Senate being controlled by Republicans in 2011, the President will still be able to veto any repeals. That’s why Marylanders need to have their voices heard now,” stated Amedori.

Reconciliation is not the method to pass health care reform. This parliamentary maneuver has never been used for such a sweeping piece of legislation,” said Amedori. “The President’s plan for health care reform is seriously flawed. That’s why no one elected Republican Senator will support the legislation.”

Reconciliation has been used 19 times since 1980. 12 of those times the procedure was used to pass omnibus budget bills that had an overwhelming support in the Senate. Only on 2 occasions the budget bills were controversial enough to lack bipartisan support.

“I hope that my fellow candidates will join my effort. This is one of the most important legislative fights in our lifetime. Our differences on other issues should be put aside to send the strongest message possible to the incumbent who is listens more to Harry Reid than the people of Maryland. It is time to put Maryland first. No on reconciliation,” said Amedori.

Amedori thinks that her fellow Republican candidates are not focused on the here and now with the circulation of the unity pledge. “We are facing a massive government takeover of health care and they are talking about unity after the Primary. Let’s be united on an issue that matters,” added Amedori.

March 4, 2010

Carmen Amedori - I am a candidate for the US Senate because:

I am a candidate for the US Senate because, like you, I am sick and tired of the Big Government in our wallets. Like you, I am sick and tired of the wasteful spending inside the beltway. It is time to send the incumbents home. It is time to have new ideas and fresh blood to help return the government to the side of We The People.

I was born and raised in Baltimore until age 15, at which time my family moved to Baltimore County. I have resided in Carroll County for 30 years. Before entering politics, I was employed as a journalist with The Baltimore Sun and The Carroll County Times, while raising two children.

From 1999 thru 2004, I had the honor to represent the citizens of Carroll County in the MD House of Delegates and served the entire time on the Judiciary Committee. During my tenure, I was Deputy Minority Whip and Assistant Minority Leader.

In 2004, then Governor Robert Ehrlich appointed me to the Maryland Parole Commission where I served until Dec. 2009 when my appointment expired. I am the very proud Mother of two daughters; Nicole, 30 and Kara, 27.

20100304 I am a candidate for the US Senate because

AMEDORI: Launches Online Petition to Stop Reconciliation

(Westminster, MD) Today, Carmen Amedori, Republican candidate for United States Senate in Maryland, launched an online petition calling on United States Senator Barbara Mikulski to vote no on reconciliation for Obamacare. Please sign Carmen’s Petition by visiting http://www.amedoriforsenate.com/petition.php

“Reconciliation is not the method to pass health care reform.

“I am launching this online effort to send a message to our Senator that Marylanders don’t want Obamacare forced down our throats and that she should vote against reconciliation,” state Amedori. “A national mandate is not a way to make health care more affordable.”

People can join Carmen’s effort by visiting
www.amedoriforsenate.com or by friending Amedori For U.S. Senate on facebook.

Amedori believes that a health care reform package must include tort reform, associated health plans, rules that allow people to purchase health insurance across state lines, more emphasis on health savings accounts and a method for allowing people with pre-existing conditions to purchase insurance coverage.

Amedori is a former Maryland House Delegate where she served on the Judiciary Committee and quickly rose to the position of Assistant Minority Leader. She earned a distinguished reputation for being tough on crime, a strong advocate for property rights, and a champion for small business. In 2004, Governor Robert Ehrlich honored Amedori by appointing her to the Maryland Parole Commission where she served until last year.

Amedori is a graduate of Stevenson University. Before entering public life, she was a paralegal and journalist for the Baltimore Sun. She is the proud mother of two daughters.

Amedori believes that as the next United States Senator she can do a better job for the people of Maryland. She wants to Maryland First ahead of political partisanship. “It is time we had a Senator focused on results rather than political gamesmanship. As a former member of the House Delegates, I know how to make a difference. Barbara has had 24 years and now is the time for new leadership,” added Amedori.

AMEDORI: Health Care Reform Must Address Costs

(Westminster, MD) Today, Carmen Amedori, Republican candidate for United States Senate in Maryland, commented on President Obama’s bipartisan health care summit by stating that the plan must address costs in order to increase availability across the nation.

“It’s the costs! It’s the costs! It’s the costs! In a perfect world no one would ever get sick and everyone would have insurance just in case. But in the real world, skyrocketing costs are forcing Marylanders to make hard choices. By mandating people to get health insurance, you are not driving down the costs. Just look at what happened in Massachusetts when they mandated coverage but yet they did not address cost issues. Within the first two years, insurance premiums increased 50% and they are going up again this year. Their insurance premiums have increased faster than the rest of the nation,” said Amedori.

Amedori believes that a reform package must include tort reform, associated health plans, rules that allow people to purchase health insurance across state lines, and more emphasis on health savings accounts. Moreover, she believes if Congress could just agree on one reform it should be to allow people with pre-existing conditions to purchase insurance coverage.

Absent from today’s summit was Senator Barbara Mikulski. Only Congressman Steny Hoyer from Maryland was invited which has many people wondering how effective Mikulski is.

She wants to Maryland First ahead of political partisanship. “It is time we had a Senator focused on results rather than political gamesmanship. As a former member of the House Delegates, I know how to make a difference. Barbara has had 24 years and now is the time for new leadership,” added Amedori.

Recent articles by Doug Tallman

Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. bowed out of the Republican gubernatorial race Monday, calling on his former boss, Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., to enter the campaign against Gov. Martin O'Malley.

Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown said Friday that he didn't think Ehrlich had much of a record to run on, in case he does try to reclaim the governorship.

Also on the election front, Carmen Amedori, a former delegate, announced she was running for U.S. Senate.

[…]

Meanwhile, Amedori would be the third Republican to file a candidacy for U.S. Senate. Daniel W. McAndrew and Jim Rutledge, both of Forest Hill, have filed to run as Republican candidates for senator, according to the Maryland State Board of Elections. Eric Wargotz, a Queen Anne's County commissioner and pathologist, also is planning to run for the seat.

"It's not something on a whim. It's something I've been wanting all my life," said Amedori, who spent five and a half years in the House of Delegates representing a Carroll County district before Ehrlich appointed her to the Maryland Parole Commission.

The winner of the Sept. 14 Republican primary is likely to face U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, who is seeking a fifth term.

Defeating Mikulski, a Baltimore Democrat, could be an uphill climb for any Republican. A January poll by Gonzales Research and Marketing of Annapolis put her approval rating at 64 percent, higher than President Barack Obama and Gov. Martin O'Malley.

"Sen. Mikulski has been in office for four terms. I'm sure she has helped a lot of constituents. I'm sure her constituent service has been excellent. But they have not met Carmen Amedori," Amedori said. "I know how to provide for my constituency. And I would hope that anyone who has covered a seat for that long would have that kind of approval rating. But that's not going to deter me."

Amedori, 54, said she would work to remove excess regulations.

"For every law or regulation that people are out there supporting, I would work hard to repeal three or four others," she said.

Amedori served in the House of Delegates until 2004, when Ehrlich appointed her to the Parole Commission. That appointment ended in January.

A Message for Hollywood by Carmen Amedori

A Message for Hollywood by Carmen Amedori

Dateline: Sunday (August 31, 2008) in the lobby of the Embassy Suites St. Paul.

Many of the top-name speakers have cancelled their appearances at the convention due to the storm. President George W. Bush, who was supposed to speak Monday, will not be in attendance. We are told that the business of the day will be conducted on Monday, but we will be out of the Xcel Center by 5 p.m.

Del. Tony O’Donnell and I head back to Minneapolis for a premier of the movie “An American Carol,” a satire on certain ultra-liberal documentary films.

The main character was a filmmaker named Michael Malone, who was associated with the liberal advocacy group “Mooveahead.org” It starred Jon Voight, Kelsey Grammer and many other high-profile conservative actors, with a guest appearance by Bill O’Reilly. The release date is Oct. 3, and I urge all to make it a blockbuster sending the Hollywood elite a strong message on the possible unintended damage that can be inflicted by making films that strike to the heart of our servicemen and -women while at war.

Carmen Amedori, Republican

Carmen Amedori, 52, is a resident of Westminster and was a state delegate representing Carroll County from 1998 to 2004, when she was appointed by then-Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. to serve on the Maryland Parole Commission.

A native of Baltimore and graduate of Villa Julie College, Amedori worked as a paralegal and journalist while raising two daughters, before entering the world of politics.

She was one of the few elected officials in Maryland who supported John McCain when he ran for president in 2000, and was an alternate delegate at that year's convention.

Her backing has not wavered, and this year, Amedori is the Western Maryland regional director for McCain. She has also been cleared to be a surrogate — meaning she has the blessing to speak on McCain’s behalf when called upon.

Singing with one voice for a worthy cause

11/28/07 By Kevin E. Dayhoff

Email this story to a friend

On Nov. 17, members of our community packed St. John Catholic Church to hear the talented and beautiful voices of artists who came together and donated their time for our community -- and for a worthy cause.

Musical groups including the McDaniel College Madigal Singers, Old Line Statesmen Barber Shop Chorus (under the direction of Jeff Liebknecht), the Children's Chorus of Carroll County, New Life for Girls Choir, Masterworks Chorale, Westminster Trombone Choir and the Coram Deo performed a benefit concert for Carroll County Domestic Violence Safe House.

Connie Sgarlata, director of the Office of Family and Children's Services, said both the audience and the performers were moved by "the solidarity that the music and words created in our effort to address domestic violence."

Sgarlata's comments were echoed by McDaniel College professor of music Dr. Margie Boudreaux and Diane Jones, the Children's Chorus of Carroll County artistic director. Both noted that the music was wonderful -- the message was clear.

Visiting the CIA for an Iron Chef Thanksgiving

11/20/07 By Kevin E. Dayhoff

Happy Thanksgiving. We have so much for which to be thankful, and of course friends, family -- and food -- come to mind.

Over the recent Veterans Day weekend, Miss Caroline and I ventured to Hyde Park, N.Y., for a two-day conference on "The Presidency and the Supreme Court."

The conference took place at The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and examined the relationship between past presidents and the Supreme Court, the political process of Supreme Court nominations and the court's influence on social issues, civil rights and governmental power in times of war and crisis.

The conference was fascinating. We had the opportunity to meet and chat with a number of published historians and presidential and Supreme Court scholars.

We also met folks like former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, former White House counsels John W. Dean, C. Boyden Gray and Beth Nolan, former U.S. Senator from Maryland Paul Sarbanes and National Public Radio Senior Correspondent Juan Williams.

Legal Affairs Correspondent for National Public Radio Nina Totenberg was the moderator for the event.

However, I must say the highlight of the weekend was catching up with Rudy Speckamp

One more helping of grits, with a Dr. Pepper and a side of fruitcake

Jerry Barnes: county state's attorney and veteran

11/07/07 By Kevin E. Dayhoff

Email this story to a friend

As Veterans Day fast approaches -- it's this Sunday, Nov. 11 -- it's appropriate to remember that service to our country is a cherished tradition in Carroll County.

And so it was that in May 1968, Jerry F. Barnes joined the U.S. Army.

Today, we know Mr. Barnes as Carroll County State's Attorney.

But it was back then that the Westminster High School graduate, class of 1966, received his draft notice.

According to a biographical sketch written by Carmen Amedori, Mr. Barnes joined draftees from Carroll County "on a school bus at the (Westminster) Post Office downtown," and headed for Fort Holabird in Baltimore -- and then promptly to Fort Bragg, N.C.

Mr. Barnes noted that fellow Carroll countians Mark Main, Eddie Sensabaugh and Sam Greenholtz were at Fort Bragg at the same time.

Mr. Barnes eschewed being drafted for two years and, instead, enlisted for three years. At first he wanted to be a helicopter pilot, but after a series of events he signed up for Special Forces -- the Green Berets.

Barnes' Vietnam experience is one of a number of profiles by Ms. Amedori appearing in a new publication from the Historical Society of Carroll County, "Tours of Duty: Carroll County and the Vietnam War," by Gary D. Jestes and Jay A. Graybeal. (The book will be released this Sunday at a book signing, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Historical Society, 210 E. Main St., Westminster.)

Billy Bob threw something off the Route 140 bridge

10/31/07 By Kevin E. Dayhoff

It was 40 years ago, the late summer of 1967 that we first learned from "Mama" that the nice young preacher, Brother Taylor "said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge. And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge."

I first heard that song, "Ode to Billy Joe," by Bobbie Gentry that summer on WCAO on the AM dial of the car radio.

It was also in this time period that I became firmly hooked on the existential "Southern Gothic" genre of storytelling. (To refresh your memory, the song can be found on the Web at www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZt5Q-u4crc.)

Other examples of authors of the Southern gothic genre of writing include William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, Eudora Welty, Truman Capote and Harper Lee.

Tennessee Williams once described the genre as stories that reflect "an intuition of an underlying dreadfulness in modern experience."

Who can forget: It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day. And mama hollered at the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet."

OK, so who was Herb Ruby?

09/26/07 By Kevin E. Dayhoff

Email this story to a friend

That's the question we posed last week when we talked about the placement of the Ruby Field sign at Westminster High's football field.

Let's begin this way -- when was the last time you attended a Friday night local high school football game?

We all know that local sports teams are one of the strongest glues that bind our community together. For hot dogs, pizza, entertainment and getting together outside in the fresh air with your family, friends and neighbors, there is hardly anything better than Friday night high school football games.

Well, we have Coach Ruby to thank for our Friday night high school football traditions in Carroll County.

Yep, it all started in 1947 when he became the first high school football coach in Carroll County.

After Coach Ruby graduated from Bridgewater College in 1941, he actually played semi-professional baseball for the Staunton Presidents of the Virginia Baseball League.

Resetting a local gem to mark Ruby Field

09/19/07 By Kevin E. Dayhoff

Email this story to a friend

I had the pleasure of attending the "rededication" of the Ruby Field sign under the scoreboard at the Westminster High School football field right before the Westminster v. Francis Scott Key football game on Friday evening, Sept. 7.

A gathering of friends and family of the late Coach Herb Ruby was in attendance.

In the tradition of Coach Ruby himself, it appears the sign rededication was the result of folks working together as a team to benefit the community as a whole.

It got downright humorous as everyone gave the credit for the effort to someone else. This, too, is fitting as a tribute to the late Coach Ruby -- he was known for putting athletes, the team and the community above himself. He abhorred having attention drawn to him individually.

The little ceremony wasn't a splashy affair. It was essentially a small group of folks gathered to pay their respects. A few stories were traded back and forth -- in somewhat hushed tones. A photo was taken and everyone quickly went about their business.

Coach Ruby would have approved.

Over the roar of opening night, the pre-game excitement from the large crowd, football players warming-up and cheerleaders and the band practicing, my conversation with Carroll County Superintendent Dr. Chuck Ecker and Jim Head (my high school football coach, by the way) turned to the history of Ruby Field.

When "new" Westminster High School opened in fall 1971, the sign did not accompany the move from the school's former football field on Longwell Avenue, the "old" Westminster High grounds where the school operated from 1936 to 1971.
