On January 26, 1931, Westminster Firefighter Joe Hahn died.

Honoring & Remembering Maryland Fallen Heroes. Westminster Fire Eng. & Hose Co.1~Carroll County, Maryland

On January 26, 1931, our brothers and sisters in the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 and the greater Carroll County community suffered one the two Line of Duty Deaths in the company's history when Fireman Joseph G. Hahn died.

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on Monday January 26,1931, the Westminster Fire Engine & Hose Co.No.1 responded to the Oscar Hess residence, on the Manchester State Road near Cranberry, for a gasoline stove explosion in the kitchen.

The flames were quickly extinguished by the Westminster firemen. The kitchen was mostly destroyed from the blast, but the rest of the house was saved, having suffered only smoke damage and some broken windowpanes.

While the firemen were performing salvage and overhaul, Fireman Joseph G. Hahn suffered a heart attack and fell over. Before medical aid could be summoned, death occurred.

Fireman Joseph G. Hahn was 46 years old. Number of years served is unknown at this time.

According to information provided by the Reese & Community Volunteer Fire Company, “Paramedic/Firefighter Jones was exposed to and contracted COVID-19 while performing his duties serving the citizens of Carroll County, Maryland in December 2021. After a hard fight and multiple complications, he succumbed to the virus on January 20, 2022.

“His death represents the first in the Line of Duty Death for the Reese & Community Volunteer Fire Company, newly formed Carroll County Department of Fire & EMS, and IAFF Local 5184.

“Jones’s dedication to the fire service began when he joined the Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Company on September 19, 1978, where remained a member until his death. The Fire Service became a career choice on February 28, 1982, when he entered the Baltimore County Fire Department Academy (BCoFD) as a firefighter recruit. Jones served the BCoFD as a Paramedic/Firefighter at various stations until calling Station 4D (Catonsville) home until his retirement as a Fire Lieutenant on April 4, 2012.

“Besides his years with the Baltimore County Fire Department, Jones called the Reese & Community Volunteer Fire Company in Westminster his second home and family. He joined the staff of Reese as a Paramedic in the late 1980’s working part-time until he became a full-time Paramedic, Fire Fighter, Engineer in January 2007. Since that time, he has served the Community as a paramedic, firefighter, engineer, and shift supervisor.

“Jones also volunteered at Lansdowne Volunteer Fire Company from 2011-2013 and Cape St. Claire Volunteer Fire Company from January 2013, until his death where he was promoted on May 19, 2021, as a Fire Lieutenant, by the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. Additionally, he was a career-long member of IAFF Local 1311 (Baltimore County Professional Fire Fighters) and Local 5184 (Carroll County Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics).

Slain Davis police officer Natalie Corona

Slain Davis police officer Natalie Corona

Wow – so sad: “… but authorities say Limbaugh walked up to a traffic accident that Corona was called to and started shooting at her patrol car, a fire truck and a minivan…”

I guess this reinforces our training about safety perimeters. According to ODMP: “As Officer Corona was conducting an investigation at the collision scene a person not involved with the crashed rode up to the scene on a bicycle. As Officer Corona spoke to one of the persons involved in the crash the man then walked up to her and opened fire without warning, striking her. He shot her several more times after she fell to the ground before shooting randomly at others bystanders and vehicles…”

The story behind this image of slain Davis police officer Natalie Corona

DAVIS, Calif. (KTVU) - In the image, she's wearing a royal blue gown, carrying a black-striped American flag with a thin blue line streaked across it.

[…]

It's this compelling photograph of slain Davis police officer Natalie Corona that circulated throughout the country on Friday, hours after the 22-year-old was shot to death by a suspect identified on Saturday as Kevin Douglas Limbaugh, 48.

[…]

"I would like this photograph to serve as my gratitude for all those law enforcement men and women who have served, who are currently serving, and those who have died in the line of duty protecting our liberties in this great country," Corona wrote on her Facebook page on Oct. 21, 2016. She used the hashtags: #LawEnforcement #Blueline #Thankyou #Lausphotography.

[…]

Corona's father, Jose Merced Corona, spent 26 years as a Colusa County Sheriff's sergeant before retiring and getting elected to the county's Board of Supervisors last November. Her mother is a first-grade teacher, and two cousins are also in law enforcement, Gomez said.

[…]

She grew up in a tight-knit family in the Northern California town of Arbuckle. The family had emigrated from Mexico a few generations ago and had become established members of their community.

Two Harford County Md. Sheriff’s Office Deputies Murdered in Line of Duty

Two Harford County Sheriff's Office Deputies Murdered in Line of Duty

Harford County Sheriff's Office

NEWS RELEASE

Two Deputies Murdered in Line of Duty

[February 11, 2016, Abindgon, MD]

On Wednesday, February 10, 2016, Senior Deputy Patrick Dailey and Senior Deputy Mark Logsdon of the Harford County Sheriff's Office were killed in the line of duty while faithfully serving the citizens of Harford County.

At approximately 11:40 a.m., the Harford County Department of Emergency Services received a call from a citizen concerning a suspicious circumstance, indicating a wanted person was in the Panera Bread restaurant located in the 3400 block of Merchant Drive in Abingdon, Maryland.

At approximately 11:46 a.m., Deputies were dispatched to the location in an attempt to locate the wanted subject who had been described by the caller.
The investigation has revealed that Senior Deputy Dailey arrived at the Panera Bread a short time after the initial dispatch, entered and approached a subject meeting the description who was seated alone at a table.  While speaking to Senior Deputy Dailey, the suspect, without warning, produced a handgun and shot Senior Deputy Dailey in the head.  The suspect then exited the Panera Bread and ran in the direction of Parkview at Box Hill, a senior living apartment center.

Within moments, a second Deputy arrived at the restaurant and located Senior Deputy Dailey with a gunshot wound.

Shortly after 12:00 p.m., Senior Deputy Logsdon, who had arrived on scene, exited his vehicle and, along with additional Harford County deputies, located the suspect seated in the front seat of a vehicle in the parking lot at Parkview at Box Hill.  Upon contact by Senior Deputy Logsdon, the suspect fired multiple rounds at the Deputy, mortally wounding him.

Deputies within close proximity, including Senior Deputy Logsdon, returned fire, striking and killing the suspect.  He has subsequently been identified as David Brian Evans (W/M, 12/25/47) who has no fixed address.  The loaded handgun used to murder Senior Deputy Logsdon and Senior Deputy Dailey was recovered from the suspect.

Lifesaving efforts were immediately administered to both Senior Deputy Dailey and Senior Deputy Logsdon by Sheriff's Deputies on scene.

Abingdon and Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Departments responded and continued their life saving efforts.

Senior Deputy Dailey was transported from the scene by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Senior Deputy Logsdon was transported to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center.  Both succumbed to their injuries.

Investigators from the Harford County Sheriff's Office are continuing to work tirelessly to reconstruct the events surrounding these senseless murders.
Senior Deputy Dailey had served with the Harford County Sheriff's Office for 30 years and was assigned to the Court Services Division.  He was also a lifelong member of the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.  He is survived by his two children, girlfriend and mother.

Senior Deputy Logsdon had served with the Harford County Sheriff's Office for 16 years and was assigned to the Community Services Division.  He is survived by his wife, three children, and parents.

Both Senior Deputy Dailey and Senior Deputy Logsdon served in the military.  Senior Deputy Dailey served in the Marines; Senior Deputy Logsdon served in the United States Army.

Sheriff Jeffrey R. Gahler and the members of the Harford County Sheriff's Office would like to express our sincerest gratitude to the Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Bel Air Police Department, Aberdeen Police Department, Havre de Grace Police Department, Baltimore County Police Department, the State Highway Administration, Harford County Department of Emergency Services, and all the local fire companies who assisted yesterday.  Their assistance greatly helped our agency get through yesterday's tragic events.

Wed., Feb. 10, 2016 Harford Co. MD Sheriff Senior Deputy Patrick Dailey and Senior Deputy Mark Logsdon were shot and killed

Wed., Feb. 10, 2016 Harford Co. MD Sheriff Senior Deputy Patrick Dailey and Senior Deputy Mark Logsdon were shot and killed by an emotionally disturbed person who was wanted for assaulting a police officer in Florida.

According to the "Officer Down Memorial Page." The deputies had been dispatched to the restaurant after the man's ex-wife had called to report the subject was there. Deputy Dailey, who knew the subject, sat down at the man's table and asked how he was doing. Without warning the subject produced a handgun and shot the deputy in the head, killing him.

The man fled into the parking lot where he was confronted by Deputy Logsdon. The subject shot and killed Deputy Logsdon before he was killed by two other deputies.
Deputy Dailey was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Harford County Sheriff's Office for 30 years. He is survived by his two children and mother."

Hat tip to my brother, Jason Tyler, for getting this information out to us.

Please join me in prayers for members of our LE families all over the US. Today, I ask for prayers for the Harford Co Sheriff's Department. Two members of their department were shot down in cold blood yesterday, Wed. Feb. 10, 2016. Both leave behind families, colleagues, and friends that are heartbroken and shocked. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. We pray for our greater community that is shocked and fed up with the senseless violence committed against the very folks who protect us and keep us safe. We are so heartbroken. Amen

The violence committed against our officers must come to an end. Our men and women in blue must know that the vast majority stand with them and appreciate their service to our community. And we stand against the community leaders that trade in the empty rhetoric that attempts to divide us or does not understand that without public safety you have no community.

Sergeant Wallace J. Mowbray
End of Watch: 8/10/1975
Age: 39
Years of Service: 13
Cause of Death: Gunfire
National Memorial Panel: 21-E: 10

While checking via radio on the license of a driver of a van with three other occupants, Sgt. Mowbray was shot and killed when struck by a shotgun blast. Investigation later revealed that the registration plates on the van were stolen and there were outstanding warrants for two of the occupants. Occurred near Baker's Liquor Store in Chester, MD.

According to information from the Maryland State Police.

Forty years ago today, Sgt. Mowbray was shot and killed during a traffic stop near Chester, Maryland. He was checking a license plate over the radio when he was struck by a shotgun blast. The license plates turned out to be stolen and two of the four occupants had warrants out for their arrest.

All four suspects fled from the scene.

Two suspects, who were later convicted of doing the shooting, kidnapped a couple in Chester, took their car, and raped the woman. They were captured several hours later.

The other two suspects stole a boat and headed toward the Western Shore. They were captured two days later.

All four suspects were convicted of Sergeant Mowbray's murder.

One of the suspects convicted of doing the shooting was sentenced to life plus 95 years for rape, kidnapping, and other crimes committed before and after Sergeant Mowbray's murder. In 1982 he escaped from prison and was placed on the FBI's 10 most wanted list. He was captured 14 months later. In 1991 he won a new trial which resulted in less serious convictions and a 27 year sentence. He was paroled in 1993. Four months later he was sent back to prison for four years when he violated his parole with a disorderly conduct charge. In 1999 he was sent back to prison again when he took money from a charity jar in a Glen Burnie, Maryland, cafe. On December 1, 2003, he was arrested and charged with robbing a Glen Burnie bank. He was convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to 20 years June 18, 2004.

The other suspect convicted of the shooting was sentenced to life in prison.

The third suspect was sentenced to 55 years and the fourth suspect was sentenced to 20 years.

As Trooper Armstead focused on the shoulder activity, the traffic ahead of him stopped.
