Baltimore football championship seasons have always started in Westminster ... so should we be worried?

Many Carroll County residents are getting a case of nostalgic Super Bowl fever as they look forward to Sunday's AFC championship contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots.

For more than 120 years — since football debuted at then-Western Maryland College on Oct. 31, 1891 — football has been a part of the history of Carroll County.

Not to be overlooked is the fact that since July 1949, Baltimore football teams have held summer practice in Westminster. Names like Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, Art Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Eugene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, Alan Ameche, and Wilbur (Weeb) Ewbank, just to mention a few, have become an important part of our Carroll County cultural history.

And yes, there is also that quarterback that was cut by the Pittsburg Steelers in 1956.

What was his name? Oh yeah, right. Johnny Unitas.

Unbelievable. According to an old history of the Baltimore Colts in my files, "Unitas was cut by… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0122-20120119,0,3298374.story

By Kevin Dayhoff, December 7, 2011

Certainly many people were disappointed when the Baltimore Ravens announced Dec. 2 that the team will not be returning to its McDaniel College summer training camp.

In a Carroll Eagle article that day on ExploreCarroll.com, Westminster Mayor Utz spoke for many, "It's almost a 50-year tradition that's being broken… That's the sad part about it."

The tradition and history of Baltimore football and Westminster first began when the newspaper announced ran on Feb. 11, 1949, "College Campus To Be Used By Colts … Coach Isbell Expects to Bring 55 Players to Train, Starting in July … Baltimore's football Colts are going to train at Western Maryland College this year."

The article in the now defunct Democratic Advocate continued, "Dr. Lowell S. Ensor, president of the Methodist school, and Walter S. Driskill, Colts general manager, have signed a contract providing for the city's All-America Football Conference squad to use the Westminster College's campus as a pre-season base of operations, it was announced…"

The history of football in Baltimore — and Westminster — can trace one of its lineages to the All-America Football Conference in 1946 and another lineage to the NFL in 1944.

The first football team in Baltimore began on Dec. 28, 1946, when the bankrupt Miami Seahawks franchise, of the All-American Football Conference, was awarded to Baltimore.

Just over two-years later, according to the 1949 newspaper article, Coach Cecil Isbell said he expected to take a Colt squad to Westminster, "We plan to begin practice about five weeks before our opening contest..." Driskill said in the article… Read more: http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/neighborhoods/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archive-1211-20111207,0,828252.story

Ravens' move is blow to Westminster, but the right call for the team

Ravens' move is blow to Westminster, but the right call for the team

December 8, 2011

Sideline View By Steve Jones

The decision last week by the Baltimore Ravens to move their summer training camp from Westminster's McDaniel College to the team facility in Owings Mills came down to hearts and minds.

To thousands of football fans in the Baltimore area whose hearts belong to the football team, the Ravens were presented with an easy choice.

Since coming to Baltimore from Cleveland in 1996, the Ravens conducted training camp at McDaniel every summer until this past one, when the club remained at its Owings Mills base due to a late resolution to the lockout. It seemed logical that the Ravens would return in 2012, because you don't break with tradition.

But tradition isn't what it used to be, especially in sports, and the world is light-years removed from 1996.

The Ravens' brass used their heads when finalizing last week's decision to move training camp to their spacious and comfortable Owings Mills complex. Sad as it may be to Carroll and Westminster, the decision makes sense on many levels...

Carroll County Times News Update: NFL Playoffs: Jets Upset Colts

NFL Playoffs: Jets Upset Colts, Vikings take care of Cowboys Posted 9:15 p.m.

San Diego – Maybe Rex Ryan already knows the score of the AFC championship game, too.

I was fortunate enough to pull this screen grab off the Carroll County Times web site minutes after the Times’ staff discovered it and minutes before they pulled it.

Off course I have never-ever made a mistake in my copy. Well, maybe not. My favorite was the time I wrote Paul of Taurus – err, um, instead of Paul of Tarsus…

Anyway, it seems that right after the Times’ staff discovered it, they decided to have some fun with it just before they pulled it.

Too funny. I happen to like folks who can roll with it. For those who are not aware, the Carroll County Times has one of the best sports departments and sports reporters in the Mid-Atlantic region… Bookmark and check it out: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/sports/

However, as good as its sports reporters are; I am not under the impression that they can see into the future. Or maybe they can?

Of course, they could always use a few more semi-colons…

The Carroll County Times does a really good job of posting news updates on their site frequently during the day. It is really smart web management on their part.

I’d love to know the rest of the story as to the news feed with the incorrect headline…

Apparently, it was also linked to a news story with the incorrect headline also. But I wasn’t quick enough to grab it.

Meanwhile we certainly hope they kept the headline copy available for next week’s Jets versus the Colts game. I sure do not want the Colts to win and would love to see the Jets do it again; as they did when they beat the Colts 29-15 on Sunday, December 27, 2009…

If you will recall, that was the game when the headline from an AP article said it all, “Caldwell pulls starters in third with 5-point lead; Jets rally for win.” http://espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=291227011; when “The first-year coach (Jim Caldwell) pulled Manning & Co. with a 15-10 lead and 5:36 left in the third quarter.”

The upset spoiled the chances of the Colts from having a perfect season, and ended “the Colts' pursuit of perfection and their NFL-record 23-game winning streak with a 29-15 victory that had fans serenading Lucas Oil Stadium with boos and Manning, the three-time MVP, offering support for his coach's decision.”

The “Fast Facts” in the article explained:

“Peyton Manning was removed from the lineup in the third quarter with the Colts up 15-10. The Jets then scored 19 unanswered points to snap the Colts' 23-game regular season win streak.

“The Colts had fewer than 100 rushing yards for the fourth straight game; they have failed to reach the mark in 12 of 15 games this season.

“Peyton Manning (14 for 21, 192 yards) became the fourth player in NFL history with 50,000 passing yards for his career.”

Whatever. We should have been so lucky as to have had such a disappointment here in Baltimore with the Ravens.

Where is Matt Stover when we need him

Why is it that the Ravens no longer have Matt Stover kicking for them?

I mean seriously; I do not know the answer. Can someone explain to me why he is no longer with the Ravens?

This afternoon’s Ravens game was a real downer.

I mean, I am not a big sports fan. The sports fan in my family is my wife. My exposure with watching sports is usually watching my wife watch sports – which is highly entertaining. My usually calm and controlled mathematician and economist wife gets fairly excited and I find it, well, amusing.

That said, I want the Ravens to do well. I kinda think that it is good for the community for the Ravens to do well.

However, I have never had it explained to me why Matt Stover is not longer playing for the Ravens. Even a non-sports fan like me can tell that his talents is sorely missed. Who can fill me in?

This Day in History for February 11, 2009

This Day in History for February 11, 2009

February 11, 2009 by © Kevin Dayhoff

Years ago in the middle of February, the Baltimore Colts, graffiti, a new jail, going hungry and sweet corn were on the minds of Carroll Countians – not necessarily in that order.

The Baltimore Colts are coming to town.

On February 11, 1949 it was announced that the Baltimore Colts were coming to Western Maryland College – now known as McDaniel College - to practice in the summer.

The now out-of-print Democratic Advocate carried the headline: “College Campus To Be Used By Colts- Coach Isbell Expects to Bring 55 Players to Train, Starting in July.”

The article proclaimed: “Baltimore's football Colts are going to train at Western Maryland College this year. Dr. Lowell S. Ensor, president of the Methodist school, and Walter S. Driskill, Colts general manager, have signed a contract providing for the city's All-America Football Conference squad to use the Westminster College's campus as a pre-season base of operations …

“Driskill … cited a number of advantages in choosing Western Maryland. "The school's facilities are ideal," he explained, "and because Westminster is only 30 miles from Baltimore the fans will have a good chance to get acquainted with us.’

Children will be children.

The February 11, 1921 edition of the now defunct Union Bridge Pilot lamented: “The practice of defacing property with chalk and pencils… appears to be a favorite pastime with some children.

“Newly painted buildings and porch columns appear to offer special inducements for the practice. The town authorities as a rule do not care to resort to legal measures with children, yet it appears a few applications of this medicine might prove effective.”

New jail to be built.

On February 13, 1970, another local newspaper that has long since fallen by the wayside, the Community Reporter, reported that the Carroll County Board of Commissioners, Robert M. McKinney, Paul J. Walsh, and Scott S. Bair, Jr., “have officially approved the building of a new county jail in Westminster for Carroll County…

“The issue… has been debated for several years. In 1968 the State Jail Inspector stated the jail was not usable and ordered it closed. Since that time, the county has been transporting prisoners to the Baltimore city jail.”

Eventually somebody is going to go hungry.

The February 13, 1920 edition of the Union Bridge Pilot, helped spread the alarm that according to Prof. T. C. Atkeson, the Washington representative of the National Grange: “The Cities Must Experience Industrial Crash.”

Professor Atkeson warned that an “economic crash that will bring down the cost of living, must originate in the cities, and reach such an extent that those who have left the country sections for "big wages" will come back to the country…

“He says there is no cure for high prices that Congress, or anybody, can provide, but that the situation must work itself out...

“He says the labor situation is rapidly making it impossible for the farmers to feed the country, and that eventually somebody is going to go hungry.”

Carroll County was sweet on sweet corn.

Four years later, on February 1, 1924, the Democratic Advocate reported: “One of the largest crops produced by the farmer in Carroll (is) sweet corn…

“The average yield (was) close to 3 tons (per acre.) … The cost ran from $13.00 to $13.50 per ton. Allowing only .25 per hour for labor and .10 per hour for horse.”

Junction and Lenny Moore team up to explain what teens are thinking

Junction and Lenny Moore team up to explain what teens are thinking

Wednesday November 5, 2008 Westminster Eagle column by Kevin Dayhoff (565 words)

Tomorrow Junction will be hosting a substance abuse and awareness program sponsored by the Carroll County commissioners at 6 p.m. at The Portico, at St. John Catholic Church at 47 Monroe Avenue in Westminster.

If you are not aware of Junction; it is a local private nonprofit agency for substance abuse prevention and outpatient drug treatment. September 27 was the 37th anniversary of the incorporation of Junction. A month after incorporation, on December 6, 1971, it opened its doors in the historic Carroll County Jail on Court Street in Westminster.

Tomorrow night’s program will feature two special guest speakers, Dr. David McDuff, a nationally known adolescent, addiction, and sports psychiatrist; and Baltimore Colts Hall of Famer Lenny Moore.

Dr. McDuff has worked with adolescents with learning, attention, substance use, and mental disorders for the past twenty years. He retired from the Army Reserves in 2002 after 28 years of service as a Colonel including combat duty during the Persian Gulf War.

You may have heard of him in his capacity as the team psychiatrist and mental skills trainer for the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles for the past 13 years.

Mr. Moore, the former flanker/halfback for the Baltimore Colts in the days of John Unitas, is currently employed by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services and does presentations for the Community and Family Partnerships Department.

If that weren’t good enough, the real clincher for the evening is the topic of the program: “What are they thinking? - Connecting with your teen.”

Now I grew up in Carroll County in the 60s when the community and our world were changing rapidly. However we were little angels and it was easy to understand us. Ah, ahem, well maybe not so much.

Today’s teenagers are wonderful. You can often hear this repeated throughout the community. Nonetheless; how often have you heard yourself saying, in reference to young adults – “What were they thinking!?”

From observing the young adults of our community we can confidently look forward to handing over the future leadership of our country to a very capable and responsible generation.

However, today’s adolescents are not going to have a chance to take over the world if they have their careers and lives are negatively impacted by drugs or alcohol.

In tomorrow evening’s program, Dr. McDuff’s presentation will include explaining the developing adolescent brain, why teens make the decisions they do, teen addiction, and communicating with your teen.

Mr. Moore is very involved in sending a positive message to teens about their choices. He speaks about the risks of drugs and works to improve the lives of troubled teens.

I’ve been a member of the board of Junction since October 2000. I have come to understand that the challenges of drugs and alcohol are an equal opportunity scourge on our community.

Adolescents having problems with substance abuse happens to good and bad families - wealthy and poor, black and white. There is no magic to making our children bulletproof to substance abuse. It takes constant work and diligence.

We are fortunate in Carroll County to have two talented presenters with the stature of Dr. McDuff and Lenny Moore share with us their insights.

There will be about 20 information booths at the program with handouts and plenty of professionals to answer questions.

And, of course, since there will be food and refreshments, you can count on seeing me there.
