Pleasant Valley Community Memorial Day observance on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at 2 o’clock at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Pleasant Valley Community Memorial Day observance on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at 2 o’clock at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

On Sunday May 24, the Pleasant Valley community will once again ceremonially gather at St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ at 1427 Pleasant Valley Road at 1:45 in the afternoon for the annual Pleasant Valley Community Memorial Day service. The service is one of the many community gifts of living in Carroll County.

After gathering at the church, townsfolk, accompanied by the Wm. F. Myers and Sons Band will be escorted by the Pleasant Valley Community Fire Company for the half-mile walk to the Pleasant Valley Cemetery – where many members of my family are buried.

It is tradition that the walkers carry flowers and flags to place on the graves of the many veterans from the surrounding community that are buried in the cemetery.

This year’s speaker will be local historian, journalist and artist, Kevin E. Dayhoff, the former mayor of Westminster, 2001-2005

Time to rethink Afghanistan September 25, 2012 by Kevin E. Dayhoff

In light of a recent dispatch from Michael Yon, “Stuck in the Mud,” 24September 2012, http://www.michaelyon-online.com/stuck-in-the-mud.htm, I am reminded of what I wrote back in March, 2012:

“Time to Rethink Afghanistan” by Kevin E. Dayhoff March 28, 2012

So far, 2012 has not been a good year for the war in Afghanistan. Just last Monday a New York Times/CBS poll quantified what most Americans already know in their gut: support for the war is dropping sharply among both Democrats and Republicans.

According to the Times’ article, “Support in U.S. for Afghan War Drops Sharply, Poll Finds,” “the survey (a copy of which may be accessed here,) found that more than two-thirds of those polled — 69 percent — thought that the United States should not be at war in Afghanistan. Just four months ago, 53 percent said that Americans should no longer be fighting in the conflict, more than a decade old.”

Inadvertently, the Times article explained part of the problem when it quoted “Michael E. O’Hanlon, a military expert at the Brookings Institution, who is close to American commanders in Afghanistan, said that the opinion polls reflected a lack of awareness of the current policy…”

Yes, Mr. Hanlon, you are correct. Ten years of war and at this point in time, most Americans cannot tell you why we are still risking the lives of our young men and women.

The rest of the quote from Mr. Hanlon reads: “…the current policy, which calls for slowly turning over portions of the country to Afghan security forces, like the southern provinces, where American troops have tamped down the violence.

“I honestly believe,” said Mr. Hanlon, “if more people understood that there is a strategy and intended sequence of events with an end in sight, they would be tolerant…”

Here’s the takeaway: “The overall image of this war is of U.S. troops mired in quicksand and getting blown up and arbitrarily waiting until 2014 to come home. Of course, you’d be against it,” said Mr. Hanlon.

Bingo. Increasingly the overall image of this war has become the feckless foreign policy of sending young men and women into quicksand to get blown-up arbitrarily.

The additional context of the troubled mission-drift approach to the war may be found in a recent telling interview with the top commander in Afghanistan, detailed by Jennifer Hlad and Chris Carroll in Stars and Stripes.

U.S. Marine Gen. John Allen was quoted as saying that “he believes the majority of non-commissioned officers; staff NCOs and young officers are ‘extraordinarily well-trained.’

“Repeated tours in Afghanistan, and prior to that, in Iraq, don’t inherently reduce the effectiveness of the force or reduce the effectiveness of small-unit leadership… I’m confident the institution is solid,” said General Allen in the article, “Allen: Investigation of Afghan killings to look at leadership climate.”

Anecdotally and unscientifically, all intuition and instincts indicate that General Allen has unwittingly responded to what has been, heretofore, only whispers in the hallway… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5001

Maryland Senate Session Adjourned in Memory of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler

Maryland Senate Session Adjourned in Memory of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler - Marylanders for Joe Getty January 18, 2012

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin and I attended the funeral yesterday for Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler. In our official capacities, we offered condolences from all Maryland citizens to the family for their loss.

Today, at the end of the Senate legislative session, I moved that the Senate adjourn in memory of Airman 1st Class Seidler as a tribute to this Maryland Fallen Hero.

Seidler was 24-years-old and lived in Westminster where he graduated from Westminster High School in 2006.

When he joined the Air Force, he was accepted into the elite EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit. He was well-aware of the dangers he faced - the EOD personnel comprise only 1% of the Air Force but suffer 25% of the casualties.

On January 5, 2012, Seidler was part of a military convey of 27 vehicles engaged in hostile combat operations in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Earlier that day, his unit had defused two IEDs (improvised explosive devices) so that the convoy could continue its maneuvers. Tragically, his truck was hit by a third IED that killed Seidler and two other airmen.

The article by Kevin Dayhoff of the Carroll Eagle does an excellent job of capturing the outpouring of emotion and the honor and dignity given to this local hero during the funeral at Sol Levinson's & Bros. in Reisterstown. (click here)

Please keep the family of Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler in your prayers.

TALLIL AIR BASE, Iraq -- Some might call a bomb squad living in a bunker ironic; the 332nd Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron’s explosive ordnance disposal flight airmen here call it practical.

The EOD airmen are on alert 24-hours a day, seven days a week, and respond to an average of 25 to 30 calls each week… http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/airforce/a/afeodiraq.htm

Westminster Patch Kym Byrnes: A Tribute to Afc Matthew Seidler

A Tribute to Airman 1st Class Matthew Seidler

Seidler, a 2006 graduate of Westminster High School, was killed in action in Afghanistan on Jan. 5.

USAF Airman 1st Class Matthew R. Seidler, 24, from Westminster, was one of three Air Force servicemen killed in action on Jan. 5 when their vehicle struck an insurgent bomb in Shir Ghazi, Helmand, according to the Air Force.

Seidler was serving with the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron out of Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, according to Fallen Soldiers Afghanistan.

The Denver Post reported that Seidler was the first airman in the 21st Space Wing to die in Iraq or Afghanistan. He was on his first overseas deployment.

"This is a tragic day for Team Pete, the 21st Space Wing, the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron and especially for Matt's family," said Col. Chris Crawford, 21st Space Wing commander in a statement. "We will come together to help Matt's family and friends through their grief."

Lt. Col. Mark Donnithorne, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron commander, said Seidler's fellow soldiers will never forget his sacrifice and dedication to his "critical, yet dangerous, mission."

According to an article in the Baltimore Sun, Seidler graduated from Westminster Senior High School in 2006…http://westminster.patch.com/articles/a-tribute-to-airman-1st-class-matthew-seidler

Westminster, Md. - The Pentagon announced earlier today that a Westminster airman was one of three servicemembers who died supporting Operation Enduring Freedom on Jan. 5 in Shir ghazi, Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Airman 1st Class Matthew R. Seidler, 24, of Westminster, Md had been assigned to the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.

Also killed in the attack were Senior Airman Bryan R. Bell, 23, of Erie, Pa., who had been assigned to the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Barksdale Air Force Base, La. and Tech. Sgt. Matthew S. Schwartz, 34, of Traverse City, Mich. from the 90th Civil Engineer Squadron, FE Warren Air Force Base, Wyo.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “The Erie Times News reported that Airman Bell joined the U.S. Air Force in 2006 and served a tour of duty in Iraq. As an explosive-ordnance disposal technician, his main job was to clear routes with two other servicemen in an armored vehicle, his father Rick Bell of Harborcreek told the newspaper.

“Airman Bell last visited his dad over the summer, before his deployment to Afghanistan, and said he was still excited about his dangerous job, which gained notoriety with the Academy Award-winning movie ‘The Hurt Locker,’ which won the Academy Award for best picture in 2009.”

The website, Fallen Heroes Afghanistan - http://oefkia.blogspot.com - reports, “Sr. Airman Bell, a bomb-disposal technician serving with the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, was a volunteer firefighter. He graduated from Harbor Creek High School in 2006 and joined the Air Force the same year. He leaves behind his father, mother, wife and sister.” (Photo courtesy: http://oefkia.blogspot.com)

Fallen heroes Afghanistan reports, “Sgt. Schwartz was a bomb-disposal technician serving with the 90th Civil Engineer Squadron, FE Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming. His family told local news that this was his sixth combat mission and that he had also served in Iraq. He had served in the US Air Force for 12 years. Sgt. Schwartz leaves his wife, Jenny, and three daughters.” (Photo courtesy: http://oefkia.blogspot.com)

Seidler was one of eight of NATO’s US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldiers who have died in a series of recent attacks in southern and eastern Afghanistan, say military officials.

In accordance with ISAF policy, no further details were released. According to iCasualties.org, at least 566 NATO troops were killed in Afghanistan in 2011; including 418 from the US and 46 from the United Kingdom.

An Afghanistan International Security Assistance Force casualty report from Kabul, Afghanistan on Thursday, January 5, said, “Three International Security Assistance Force service members died following an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan today.

“It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities…”

In related news, in an “ISAF Joint Command morning operational update - January 6, 2012… South: In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, a coalition security force discovered a cache of improvised explosive device materials during a routine patrol yesterday. The security force confiscated 50 various IED components from the scene to be destroyed at a later date.

An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today. The leader constructed roadside bombs and trained insurgent fighters for attacks against coalition forces. Two additional suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

“East: In Sabari district, Khost province, an Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani leader during an operation today. The leader procured weapons for insurgent fighters and conducted roadside bomb attacks. The security force seized weapons, bomb making materials and detained multiple insurgents during the operation.”

The news that a Westminster area service member had been killed in Afghanistan had started circulating on Friday. However it is usually best to wait to report upon such information until the Pentagon releases the information – after the Department of Defense has notified all family members and appropriate personnel…

Approximately 140,000 NATO military personnel – including about 100,000 from the United States - are currently fighting in the ten-year war against the Taliban-led insurgency against the NATO-backed government of President Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan.

No further details on the deaths of, or funeral arrangements for Seidler, Bell or Schwartz are available at the moment.

DoD Sec Panetta Urges Employers to Hire Veterans

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7, 2011 – Ensuring combat veterans who have sacrificed for their country have job opportunities when they return to civilian life is a national responsibility with roles for government and private sector alike, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said today in New York.

http://www.veteransnewsnow.com/2011/11/07/dod-sec-panetta-urges-employers-to-hire-veterans/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dod-sec-panetta-urges-employers-to-hire-veterans

By  Donna  Miles

Speaking with CEOs and veterans at a roundtable discussion hosted by the Goldman Sachs Foundation in New York, the secretary emphasized the country’s moral obligation to those who have served and sacrificed in uniform.
“These are men and women in uniform that have dedicated themselves to serving this country,” he said. “They have been deployed time and time again. They have gone to the battle area time and time again.”
Now that they have returned home, Panetta said it’s up to the country to stand up to support them. “In the end, the best thing we can do to honor those that have served is to make sure that when they come back, they have some opportunity to be a part of our society and not just wind up on the unemployment rolls,” he said.... http://www.veteransnewsnow.com/2011/11/07/dod-sec-panetta-urges-employers-to-hire-veterans/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dod-sec-panetta-urges-employers-to-hire-veterans
