“Murder and Mayhem in Carroll County” - Historical Society of Carroll County Box Lunch Talk for August 15, 2017 by Kevin Dayhoff

“Murder and Mayhem in Carroll County” - Historical Society of Carroll County Box Lunch Talk for August 15, 2017 by Kevin Dayhoff

The next Historical Society of Carroll County Box Lunch Talk is next Tuesday on August 15, 2017 at 1 p.m. in Grace Hall at Grace Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street. The talk is on “Murder and Mayhem in Carroll County.”

Admission to the Box Lunch Talk is $3 for members and $7 for non-members. The price of admission includes a small selection of beverages and dessert.

Grace Lutheran Church is located at 21 Carroll Street, Westminster. Free parking is available in the nearby Carroll Street parking lot.

For more information check the historical society’s web site at http://hsccmd.org, or call them at 410-848-6494.

On August 1, 2017, Carroll County Times writer Lois Szymanski provided a preview of the talk in an article, “Central Carroll: Murder & Mayhem during box lunch talk,” in the Carroll County Times: Find it here: http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/news/neighborhoods/cc-nh-central-carroll-20170726-story.html

Ever since Biblical times when Cain committed the first murder when he killed his brother Able, crime, murder, and mayhem has been the focus of an unexplained fascination of any society and Carroll County is no different. Kevin Dayhoff reports upon many of the high crimes and misdemeanors that have stained the history of the county over the years.

From 1859 to 1916 three people were hanged in Westminster for heinous murders. Rebecca McCormack killed a 13-year-old boy by stabbing him with a pitchfork. She was convicted of murder and hanged in June 1859 outside the jail. She was the first person hanged in Carroll County, and the only woman ever to have been executed here. Joseph Davis was hanged in 1874, and Solomon Sudler, a 16-year-old, was hanged in 1916.

Over the years, not everyone liked the entertainment provided at the Odd Fellow’s Hall in Westminster. Around the time of the American Civil War a show at the hall featured unflattering impressions of Lincoln, Grant and other national leaders. The next day morning, the decapitated body of the entertainer was found in a rear stable.

Statewide, many folks are not aware that Maryland had a brief spell of dealing with witches long before the famous Salem witchcraft trials in 1692. The earliest cases in Maryland “involved the hanging of women assumed to be witches while aboard ships traveling from England to the colonies in 1654 and 1658.”

In April 1865 the editor of the Western Maryland Democrat, Joseph Shaw, was lynched in Westminster at the corner of Anchor and West Main Street for an editorial that he had published in the paper just days before President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14th 1865. "Joseph Shaw, the outspoken, pro-southern newspaperman, was Carroll County's final casualty of the war."

It might be noted, that murdering editors is on the disapproved behavior list in Westminster. You can complain and mutter epitaphs – but you can’t harm them.

Eagle Archive: In 1879, it didn't take much to get run out of Westminster

Eagle Archive: In 1879, it didn't take much to get run out of Westminster

Early spring 1879 bore witness to a curious number of low crimes and misdemeanors in Carroll County.

Historian Jay Graybeal brought a number of the stories to life a few years ago in research he conducted for the Historical Society of Carroll County.

[…]

Ahhh, the good old days. Can judges today order folks to leave town?

Seems to me that running certain folks out of town would be the perfect way to solve a few problems.

Eagle Archive: Murder and mayhem led to Carroll's last public hanging in 1916

Eagle Archive: Murder and mayhem led to Carroll's last public hanging in 1916

Two sensational murders were the talk of Carroll County in February years ago.

The first involved a thrilling trial and the other, a murder which resulted in the hanging of Solomon Sutler, Friday, April 14, 1916, on gallows purchased from Adams County for $25.00. It was the third and last hanging in the county’s history.

The first hanging was in June 1859, when the only woman ever to have been executed here, Rebecca McCormack, was hung for stabbing a 13-year-old boy with a pitchfork. Then, in 1874, Joseph Davis was hanged.

On May 21, 1920 the now defunct Union Bridge Pilot wrote about the thrilling trial for the January 29, 1920 murder of Dominick Fabrizzi. “The trial of Mrs. Dominick Fabrizzi aged 29 who admitted killing her husband near here…, then placing the body on the R. R. tracks, was begun in Westminster on Monday morning…” … http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/ph-ce-eagle-archive-0219-20120215,0,7885898.story

Convenience store clerk assaulted with baseball bat during robbery in Sykesville

Darrell L. Webb Jr., 21, wanted for armed robbery, first degree assault, and theft.

A citizen interrupted the robbery and tackled the suspect as he fled the store but was unable to hold him until police arrived

Maryland state troopers and Sykesville police responded to the High’s Convenience Store at 7400 Village Road, Sykesville this morning for a report of an assault with a baseball bat.

The Maryland State Police have reported that when the officers arrived upon the scene, at approximately 6:45 a.m., “officers located the lone store clerk suffering from multiple injuries from an apparent strike to the head and body with a baseball bat.”

A warrant has subsequently been issued for Darrell L. Webb Jr., 21, of the 1800 block of Amanda Lane, Sykesville, Md., charging him armed robbery, first-degree assault, and theft with additional charges that are pending. “Troopers believe Webb acted alone and at this time is the only suspect in the incident,” according to state police.

The 21-year-old clerk was transported to the Carroll Hospital Center by the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Company with non-life threatening injuries.

State police report that the preliminary investigation indicates that “Webb entered the convenience store and threatened the store clerk verbally. He then used the bat to strike the clerk several times before fleeing the store.”

Police say that in addition to assaulting the clerk with a baseball bat, Webb also stole an undetermined amount of Maryland Lottery scratch off tickets…

“An alert citizen observed Webb enter the store with the bat and interrupted the assault,” say police. “The citizen tackled Webb as he fled from the store but, but was unable to detain him until police arrived.”

Webb is reported to have fled the scene “in a dark blue 2006 Chrysler Sebring with Maryland tags 8AK5106,” according to state police.

It has also been reported that this is not the first time Webb has threatened the clerk. In the course of the investigation “Investigators also learned that Webb is believed to have threatened the same store clerk with a baseball bat several days prior to this incident. That incident is being investigated by officers with the Sykesville Police Department.”

Troopers from the Westminster Barrack, along with members of the Sykesville Police Department, are searching for Webb. Anyone with information about the robbery or Webb’s whereabouts is asked to contact state police at 410-386-3000.

Overnight shooting and robbery in Taneytown investigated, two suspects still at large

By Kevin Dayhoff

Maryland State Police have three men in custody and are looking for two more suspects in a shooting and robbery which erupted in the early morning hours just outside of Taneytown.

The three suspects are currently detained at the Westminster State Police barrack awaiting criminal charges as police continue to sort out the details of the crime.

The victims have been identified as Alan J. Kent, 26, and Samantha L. Stanley, 19; both of Taneytown. According to a release from the state police, Stanley was not physically hurt.

At around 2:23 a.m., Friday, police and emergency medical personnel were alerted to respond to reports of a shooting and armed robbery in 3900-block of Old Taneytown Road, Taneytown.

Upon arrival, police discovered that Kent had been “struck in the back of the head by what may have been an expandable baton,” and wounded by a gunshot.

The suspects had fled the scene.

According to a state police report, “Kent sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he is being treated for what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.”

The preliminary findings reported by the state police reveal Stanley was visiting at Kent’s residence when male suspects arrived at the home about 2:00 a.m. and called Kent outside.”

Police report that while one male remained with Kent, three other men came into the house, where a handgun was displayed and pointed at her and information was demanded “about what was in the home.”

Stanley, according to police, “said the man shot Kent’s dog when it came toward the suspect. The dog has been transported to a veterinarian for treatment…

“After removing a suitcase from the house, the victims said all four suspects left in a light colored Ford Explorer.”

An alert by police was broadcast on police scanners for the suspects. Police units from area departments responded to the area to assist with the search, including Carroll County sheriff’s office deputies and officers from the Taneytown Police Department.

Shortly after, “a Taneytown police officer searching the area spotted a light-colored Ford Explorer on Courier Court in Taneytown,” say police.

When the officer stopped the vehicle, “two African American males fled on foot and were not located. The officer took two other males into custody.”

Subsequently, “police observed what appears to be blood on the vehicle and said an expandable baton was visible inside the truck…

“The vehicle was towed to the Westminster Barrack where it will be processed for evidence after a search warrant is obtained.”

Details concerning the apprehension of a third suspect have not been released.

Maryland State Police investigators from the Westminster barrack are continuing the investigation and troopers from the State Apprehension Team, sheriff’s deputies and Taneytown police officers are assisting with the search for the remaining suspects.

The additional suspects are described as two African American males. “One is about 5’7” tall, with black, buzzed-cut hair, who was wearing a black jacket and black pants. The other at-large suspect is described as wearing a dark bandana across his face, a black jacket, and a black hood over his head.”

Maryland State Police: Two dead in Hampstead murder-suicide

Two dead in Hampstead murder-suicide

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

A tragedy as the result of domestic violence has once again struck Carroll County.

In an incident yesterday, an ex-husband is alleged to have shot his way into the home of his ex-wife, killed her fiancé, and then turned gun on himself.

By Kevin Dayhoff http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2010/03/maryland-state-police-two-dead-in.html Labels: Carroll Co Dist Hampstead, Carroll County crime, Crime, Dayhoff writing essays crime, MD State Police, Public Safety Domestic Violence http://kbetrue.livejournal.com/309053.html

(Hampstead, MD) – The Maryland State Police were called to the scene of an apparent murder-suicide, in the late-morning hours of Tuesday, March 16, 2010, just outside of the town of Hampstead in northern Carroll County, Maryland, which has left two men dead.

According to the Maryland State Police, a 911 call came in to Carroll County Emergency Operations Center shortly after 11:00 a.m. “from a woman in the 1200-block of Allview Drive. She told the dispatcher that her ex-husband had just come into her home and shot her fiancé before shooting himself.”

When police arrived they found two deceased males in a first floor family room at the rear of the house, according to Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley.

A subsequent investigation indicates that one of the males, identified as Michael L. Swift, III, 45 of the 3600-block of Benson Ave., Halethorpe, Baltimore County Md, is alleged to have used a shotgun to shoot his way through a sliding glass door in the back of the house.

At that point, police believe that Swift shot Zaidan S. “Steve” Asid, 51 and then turned the gun on himself. A .12-gauge shotgun was still in the possession of Swift when police arrived.

The police investigation revealed that the woman, (whom Kevin Dayhoff - Soundtrack will not identify because she is the victim of domestic violence,) who had made the 911 call, is apparently the former wife of Swift - and currently the fiancé of Asid, and lived at the home.

Police indicate that she was in the residence at the time of the shooting. She was taken for a medical examination, but found to be apparently unharmed physically. No one else was in the home at the time of the shooting.

The deceased were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsies as the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit spent the rest of the afternoon investigating the scene.

The Maryland State Police said that the investigation is ongoing. Check back with Kevin Dayhoff - Soundtrack - http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/ for more details as they develop.

Yesterday, a bail review hearing for Anthony Troy Soligny, accused of attacking his wife with a hammer on March 2 was postponed until today.

Maryland State Police say Soligny allegedly assaulted his wife with a steel and rubber hammer, which police said they have taken into evidence.

At about 11:30 p.m. March 2, State Police at the Westminster Barracks received a 911 call from the victim, who had gone to a neighbor’s home to call police.

Troopers found the victim had sustained what appeared to be severe blunt force trauma injuries to her head. She was transported by ambulance to the Carroll Hospital Center, then later to Shock Trauma Center.

In the hearing held this morning in Carroll County District Court, visiting Judge Paula J. Brown, noted that Soligny is accused of a violent crime and agreed with the assistant state’s attorney, Tae Yee, that Soligny “is a serious flight risk.”

After the alleged assault on March 2, Soligny had fled the state and was arrested the next day, March 3, while traveling on I-85 just outside of Lavonia Georgia. He was subsequently locked up in Franklin County Detention Center in Carnesville, Ga., until Maryland State Police returned him to Carroll County.

Last Tuesday, Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said Soligny arrived at the Carroll County Detention Center at 5:45 p.m. He was flown back to Maryland by troopers on a State Police plane. “There were no problems reported during transport.”

Meanwhile, today, the judge ordered the defendant held without bail. It was further ordered that Soligny have no contact with the alleged victim, (his wife) or “the minor children,” and that Soligny be given a psychiatric evaluation.

Soligny did not appear in person in the short hearing but remained in the Carroll County Detention Center and participated by way of a video-link into the courtroom.

After the judge read the charges to the defendant, Soligny only answered “yes,” that he understood the charges. When asked if he will be contacting a public defender or obtaining a private attorney, Soligny responded, “private attorney.”

As if he had any questions, Soligny asked, “No one is going to hurt me here?,” at which time several friends of the victim began sobbing softly in the courtroom, while observing the hearing come to a close. According to several family friends, the victim of the attack is still recuperating from serious injuries.

Various sources close to the investigation have alluded that Soligny has been “uncooperative” since his arrest.

Check back with http://www.kevindayhoff.net/ for details as they come available.

Westminster, Md. - On Tuesday, the Maryland State Police brought Anthony T. Soligny, 33, of New Windsor, back to Maryland to face charges for allegedly attacking his wife with a hammer on March 2.

Sources close to the investigation have said that initially Soligny had chosen to fight extradition, but later had a change of heart.

Multiple sources have indicated that he has, in general, been very uncooperative and combative since his arrest on March 3, while on the run, on I-85 just outside of Lavonia Georgia and locked up in Franklin County Detention Center in Carnesville, Georgia.

Yesterday evening, a Maryland State Police spokesman said, “Soligny arrived at the Carroll County, Detention Center at 5:45 pm today. He was flown back to Maryland today by troopers on a State Police plane. There were no problems reported during transport.”
