April 11, 1992 Dr. L. Earl Griswold, professor at Western Maryland

April 11, 1992 Dr. L. Earl Griswold, professor at Western Maryland Obituary

http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2016/04/april-11-1992-dr-l-earl-griswold.html

Dr. Griswold was a fixture at the Westminster United Methodist Church. I grew up in the Westminster United Methodist Church and spent much of my childhood, going back to the 1950s, at Western Maryland College – now McDaniel. I have the vaguest memories of Old Main…. Up until the early 1970s, the college was affiliated with the Methodist Church. I was part of the first summer church camps that were integrated at the college. And I have fond memories of talking with Dr. Ensor about the integration of the college.

I have very clear and fond memories of Dr. Griswold. In addition to my memories of Dr. Griswold at church and up at the college, he was also the dad of a Westminster High School Class of 1971 classmate.

He was very kind and always had time for those of us who had a keen interest in the college and the academic – and religious worldview. I was especially intrigued with his films – and his interest in traveling and documenting his travels.

I use many things I learned from Dr. Griswold – to this day. We should never forget the folks who went before us and paved the way for the infrastructure and community we enjoy today.

I had saved a place in my writing schedule to write about him upon the anniversary of his death, but once again, this year, current events have overtaken that opportunity. Perhaps I’ll do it anyway out of linear sequence. I’m not much a fan of linear history anyway. Just saying. God Bless you and your work, Dr. Griswold…..

Services for L. Earl Griswold, retired chairman of the sociology department at Western Maryland College, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Westminster United Methodist Church.

Dr. Griswold, who was 71, died Thursday after an apparent heart attack at his home in Westminster. He retired five years ago as chairman of the sociology department, and had taught courses in anthropology at the college since 1956.

In the 1970s, he made films, many of them on deafness and others on anthropological research in conjunction with the college, and also promotional films for Carroll County and other Maryland subdivisions.

In 1972, one of the films on deafness, "They Grow in Silence," won an award from the Public Broadcasting System. The college for many years has had an extensive degree program accommodating deaf students.

[…]

During World War II, he flew B-17s in Europe for the Army Air Corps. He was a psychological warfare officer for the Air Force during the Korean War.

Firefighters from Westminster New Windsor, Reese, and the Carroll County Hazmat response team responded Thursday morning to a minor chemical spill at McDaniel College

Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 staff report

Thursday, December 17, 2015

The Carroll County operations center first received a call at approximately 9 a.m. this morning with a report of a small chemical spill on the second floor of Eaton Hall.

At 9:06 a.m. emergency units were dispatched from the Westminster, New Windsor, Reese fire departments, and the Carroll County Hazmat response team.

Campus officials later reported, “A minor laboratory chemical spill occurred in Eaton Hall this morning. Local authorities immediately responded and quickly determined that this was not a life threatening situation. Cleanup is currently in progress. As a precaution, Eaton and Lewis Hall will reopen on Monday morning for regular business hours.”

The first units arrived on scene at 9:10 a.m. with Westminster chief 3-1 in command. Upon arrival, firefighters evacuated the building. At that time the Carroll County hazmat response team monitored the building and evaluated the situation and determined that there was no danger to the public.

According to Westminster fire department officials, the incident involved a small accidental spill involving 3-Heptanone which had spilled down an elevator shaft while being transported by cart.

One person involved in the incident was medically evaluated on the scene by paramedics, but not transported to the hospital. There were no injuries.

The building was returned to McDaniel at 11:15 a.m. for building repairs and minor cleaning. Firefighters and equipment remained on the scene until 11:30 a.m.

Mitchell K. Alexander, McDaniel College director of Event Services

February 19, 2014

I learned today from my friend on Facebook, Mahlia Joyce that my dear friend Mitch Alexander has passed away from a heart attack… I am so sad and my heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. Mitch was a wonderful friend for many-many years. He was always good for a big hug, a huge smile and a kind word.

Dr. Ethan A. Seidel wrote:

Rest in peace Mitch...

We regret to inform the McDaniel community that Mitchell K. Alexander, director of Event Services, passed away today, Feb. 19, following a heart attack. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Education from WMC in 1980 and worked in Student Affairs as a part-time Decker Center building manager during the evenings and weekends. While an undergraduate here, he was named to Who’s Who Among American College Students and the recipient of the Lynn F. Gruber Leadership Award

After teaching middle school science for a year at Saint Francis Academy in Baltimore, Mitchell returned to the College as assistant director of College Activities. In 1986, he completed his master’s degree in School Administration. He left for a promotion in 1988 and served as director of Student Activities at Post College in Waterbury, Connecticut. He returned 16 months later to WMC as student activities director.

In a 1993 edition of the student newspaper, Mitchell was described as having, “the whole campus in his hands.” His legacy is one of empowering student groups to organize and create successful events for the campus community. More recently, his campus knowledge was invaluable for his expertise and guidance for event staging and set-ups.

He is survived by his wife Mildred Artis Alexander, class of 1981, and their two children, Blake and Paige.

Information regarding funeral services will be shared when available.

Dr. Ethan A. Seidel

Seale, former Black Panther leader, will speak at McDaniel next Tuesday

Bobby Seale, the former chairman and co-founder of the Black Panther Party is scheduled to come to speak at McDaniel College at The Forum in Decker College Center on Tuesday, October 1.

Seale, who has long since renounced violence as a strategy for social change, helped found the Panthers in 1966. At the time, the organization was dedicated to defending African-Americans against perceived incidences of police brutality and providing a community-based network of self-help social services.

Seale left the Panthers in 1974 after his more militant views moderated. He subsequently endorsed a nonviolent strategy that centered upon providing community services to African Americans.

Seale was born in Dallas, Texas in 1936 but grew up in Oakland, California. Seale met Black Panther Party co-founder, Huey P. Newton while attending what was then-known as Oakland City College, now part of the Peralta Community College District, which includes Merritt and Laney College.

Both Seale and Newton were admirers of Malcolm X and his teachings and were moved by his assassination after a speaking engagement in Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom on February 21, 1965. Three gunmen rushed Malcolm onstage and shot him 15 times at close range. The 39-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at New York's Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

In the mid-1960s, a growing number of civil rights advocates were unhappy with the lack of progress in implementing integration and other civil rights reforms and many, especially young people, had begun to reject the non-violent tactics advocated by the traditional 1950s and early 1960s leaders in the civil rights movement.

After the death of Malcolm X, many of the younger African-Americans felt disenchanted and disenfranchised by the mainstream civil rights movement, and began to explore others ways to make themselves heard.

They adopted Malcolm's slogan, "Freedom by any means necessary," and began forming a network of Panther chapters throughout the country.

A McDaniel College information release reports, the Panthers developed into a militant Marxist revolutionary group that continued to gain popularity throughout the late 1960s. In 1968 membership increased from 400 members to 5,000 members and 45 chapters and branches. According to J. Edgar Hoover, the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Panthers were the "No. 1 threat to the internal security of the nation."

Seale's lecture next Tuesday is titled, "From the Sixties to the Future," and according to McDaniel College, he “will transport the audience back to a time when the activism of hundreds of thousands of protesters created cross-cultural coalitions, numerous community programs, and an unforgettable synergy of forces. Seale will share his thoughts on how we must reach for the future and understand how all civil-human rights issues today are interconnected, interdependent and interrelated with environmental problems, political issues, and global economics.”
