Second Saturday Salon Group
September 12 through November 7, 2015
Opening:  Saturday, September 12 5:30-7:30

The word “salon” is familiar to many as it refers to people joining together to discuss and promote art, music, poetry, and literature.  It was in this spirit that the “Second Saturday Salon” was created: A group dedicated to sharing creative efforts in a wholly supportive, nonjudgmental environment. The Second Saturday Salon meets in an atmosphere of camaraderie and good fellowship, and its members’ work is made stronger by friendships, mutual encouragement, and gentle feedback.
Please join us at 5:30pm on Saturday, September 12, which is Second Saturday in Westminster, for the opening of “Works by the Second Saturday Salon Group,” and partake in the generous and vibrant spirit of “salon!”
For more images from the Second Saturday Salon, please look at the OTA website under "Special Events."
Trending in Westminster – Second Saturday Events

Westminster has joined the growing number of communities creating events to bring people into town to enjoy the many dining, entertainment, and shopping opportunities that thrive within the city limits.  Downtown is alive, vibrant, and anything but cookie-cutter!

On September 12, the Second Saturday Pop-Up Art Market opens in the Sentinel Parking lot adjacent to Off Track Art. Juried artists will displaying their wares from10am to 3pm. Come to see pottery, fiber art, paintings, photography, and more.  Off Track Art is open for your perusal, and it’s only a short walk to the Downtown Farmers Market, where the bounty of Carroll County gardeners, bakers, coffee roasters, and hops growers are available for your own farm-to-table experience.  Make it a fun day and come back for the Salon Opening that night.

Please mark your calendars for these upcoming events:

Midnight Madness – It's not a Second Saturday, but lots of fun during Fall Fest in Westminster. On Friday, September 25, 6pm to midnight, shoppers at Off Track Art will receive a 20% discount throughout the gallery.  If you’ve had your eye on a special piece, you know when to shop!  We'll have musicians playing classic rock and several of the artists will be in the gallery to help you make your selections--and there's so much to choose from!  It's a great night to visit Off Track Art

Oyster Stroll – Saturday, October 10, 12noon to 4pm.  Off Track Art will be hosting an oyster farmer shucking fresh oysters on the half-shell in front of the gallery. Off Track will have fun specially priced oyster & pearl jewelry and the Second Saturday Pop-Up Art Market will be in full swing.  This event is in cooperation with Coastal Conservation Maryland; all the oyster shells will be reserved to start to build a “Westminster” reef in the Bay.  Full event schedule here.

Off Track Art will host an opening reception for Sherrill Cooper on Friday, May 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. http://tinyurl.com/otuwfez

Sherrill Cooper is the featured artist at Off Track Art for May and June 2014

Off Track Art, an artists’ cooperative in downtown Westminster, will host an opening reception for Sherrill Cooper on Friday, May 2, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Ms. Cooper is the featured artist at Off Track Art for May and June 2014.

Sherrill has an extensive body of work that reflect her love of the figure.

"I love people watching,” says Ms. Cooper. “The way they sit, stand, their overall posture and attitude fascinates me. I am drawn to the figure absorbed in contemplation—capturing their inner sense of isolation. I seek to communicate their emotions at that particular time. I want the viewer to feel what the subject is feeling…

According to her artist’s statement and brief biographical sketch, “Sherrill Cooper's studio feels like a tree house. It overlooks a lush, dense oak forest in Finksburg, MD.

In this setting Sherrill has found a way to merge her two passions: illustration and painting in oil.

She has enjoyed a successful 30 year career as an illustrator.  Now that she has raised two children, she finds more time to paint.

Illustration has taught her composition, color, creativity, expression, and most of all draftsmanship.

These disciplines serve her well when she applies paint to canvas.  She seeks to distill all of her experiences in to each painting with fresh concepts, strong design sensibilities, emotional brushstrokes, and rich and textural color.

The figure interests Sherrill most.  Particularly those moments of contemplation when people are caught-up in their thoughts and emotions.

Attitude, body language and posture are what she seeks to communicate with the viewer.

Choosing the correct value is essential.  Putting it down only once, with the appropriate brush and stroke. These are choices that I make very carefully. If I get them right, the painting, like the person moves and breathes. - Sherrill Cooper

Textile artist Sue Helmken to open exhibit at Off Track Art in Westminster Friday evening March 7, 2014

Textile artist Sue Helmken to open exhibit at Off Track Art in Westminster Fri March 7, 2014 - Kevin Dayhoff http://westminster.patch.com/groups/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog/p/textile-artist-sue-helmken-to-open-exhibit-at-off-track-art-in-westminster-friday-evening-march-7-2014
When: Friday, March 7, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Off Track Art gallery at 11 Liberty Street Side Entrance in historic downtown Westminster:

Sue Helmken is a textile artist with over 30 years’ experience in weaving, dyeing and teaching.

According to information provided by the gallery and the artists, Ms. Helmken earned a B.A. in Design at East Carolina University and has continued learning new techniques by experimenting and by studying with fiber artists such as Madelyn Van der Hoogt, Alice Schlein, Barbara Cooper, Donna Sullivan, Jozef Bajus, and Holly Brackmann.  She also studied at the Penland School of Crafts and the Corcoran College of Art and Design.

Experimenting with new techniques and non-traditional materials is her favorite challenge. Mixing wire and yarn, she weaves narrow bands and shapes them into 3-dimensional forms.

Some are patterned after natural forms while others mimic fashion accessories.  She also weaves clothing and accessories.

Ms. Helmken uses a variety of yarns and fibers to develop cloth with textures and patterns not found in commercially woven fabric.

Ecclesiastical pieces such as stoles, banners, and altar cloths are another facet of her work.

Ms. Helmken has been a juried member of Gallery 209 in Savannah, GA, Fiberworks Gallery and The Potomac Fibersrts Gallery in the Torpedo Factory of Alexandria, VA, Studio Fiberarts at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA.

Her work has been accepted in juried
shows throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, most recently at AASU Gallery, The Blackrock Arts Center, Sweetwater Center for the Arts, The Art League of Alexandria, VA, and The Workhouse Center for the Arts.

She taught weaving and dyework at Armstrong Atlantic State University; she conducts workshops and classes for fiber guilds and offers private lessons as well.
