Off Track gets on track with local artists By Missie Wilcox

Off Track gets on track with local artists By Missie Wilcox

Westminster Watch By Missie Wilcox Posted on www.explorecarroll.com 02/18/2009

More: Recent Missie Wilcox columns in Explore Carroll

Between winter's gray skies and dark news headlines, the world can seem pretty bleak these days.

However, a trip to Westminster reveals a veritable rainbow emerging in a small building just beyond the train tracks that criss-cross downtown.

Westminster, allow me to introduce you to Off Track Art and a world of color, texture and style.

The gallery is a cooperative of 20 immensely talented local artists who have joined together to bring an amazing array of mixed media and artwork to downtown.

The gallery is located at 11 Liberty St., at the corner of Main Street and Route 27.

As you might guess from its name, the gallery is just beside the train tracks. However, the name also describes the artists being a bit "off center" and eclectic.

The result of these varied styles and talents is a diverse display. From photography and collage to pottery and jewelry, the gallery has it. All work is handcrafted, beautifully finished and proudly displayed.

The gallery opened this past Friday the 13th, but the artists believe the superstitious date has brought them only the good kind of luck. It will be open six days a week, with a cooperative artist member being present at all times the gallery is open.

As a result, shoppers are guaranteed an interaction with an artist whose work is showcased.

"There is something really satisfying about knowing the person that made the object you just purchased," said Gail Elwell, one of the founding artists.

"If visitors stop by every time they come to Westminster, it's conceivable that they could meet a different artist each visit and be treated to a personal tour of that person's artwork," added Melinda Byrd, another local artist whose work is featured in the inaugural display.

The idea for an artist cooperative has been on the minds of several members for years, and the location and right mix of artists combine for a great time to launch the gallery.

"Several of us have wanted to open a gallery for some time," said Pam Zappardino, who serves as an adjunct lecturer in art at McDaniel College and Carroll Community College.

The artwork offered is as varied as the artists who have created it.
All work is original, and most artists are creating works that are exclusive to the gallery.

"The artwork will be that which no one has ever seen from me before," said Byrd.

The objective of the co-op is to sponsor the artwork of its members, and to provide support for the local arts community in Westminster.

"Downtown is a great place, and has the potential to be an even more wonderful destination with the arts as a centerpiece," said Zappardino. "I really hope that Off Track Art can play a part in making downtown Westminster a true arts and entertainment district."

The gallery is also an opportunity for art enthusiasts to "buy local."

"With our current nationwide economic meltdown, we believe there's nothing more important than community support for those who make and do in our neighborhoods," Elwell said.

Editor's Note: Due to an editing error, the print version of this story in the Westminster Eagle of Feb. 18 incorrectly referred to Pam Zappardino's role with Carroll Community College. It is corrected here. The Eagle regrets the error.

Mr. Oland’s article on “Off Track Art” may be found here: Cooperative artistry: Area artists join forces to open Off Track Art

By Brandon Oland, Times Staff Writer Friday, February 13, 2009

[…]

It’s been a busy week for 20 area artists who have been putting the finishing touches on Off Track Art, a cooperative located just off the railroad tracks in downtown Westminster that is having its grand opening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today.

The gallery will be filled from floor to ceiling with sculptures, jewelry, photography, paintings and more.

Westminster painter Sarah Abel Deluca said artists are, generally, independent thinkers and creators.

But the co-op’s artists have come together for this project, splitting the rent and agreeing to staff the co-op located inside Roger Lewis’ Carousel Stained Glass at 11 Liberty Street.

“It’s been exciting to watch the group come together,” Maurio said. “Everyone is bringing their own strengths.”

The artists began meeting in December over breakfast to discuss plans.

Each of the co-op members gets their own space in one of the two rooms in the gallery.

The artists drew numbers out of a hat to decide where each would display their works.

Artists dropped by this week to start installing their works, stopping to admire and compliment the projects of their peers.

Pamela Zappardino artist’s statement

February 2, 2009

Pamela Zappardino

Why I do this……………..

It has been surprisingly hard for me to write an artist’s statement. Perhaps that’s because I had not really thought of myself as an artist until fairly recently. I guess it took a lot of years to peel off those other layers and find out who I really am…and then come to believe it.

I can’t remember a time when my dad didn’t have a camera – maybe two. He loved to take pictures. I also can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a camera and I came to share his love of capturing things on film. In time, it became much more than that.

I see the world differently when I look through the viewfinder. It comes into focus; vision becomes crystalline. As I move across space, I see relationships form and fade. The intensity of experience is clear and tangible. My concentration deepens. I see through the surface layers to what’s really there.

This way of seeing is incredibly exciting to me. Without thinking about it, I started articulating these layers in my mixed media work. Photographs move in relation to each other, or find expression in multiple images. Pieces of stuff sometimes add to the mix. I like unusual juxtapositions. I’m the agent of all of this, but it I don’t think about it too hard, and just go where the work wants to take me. (My natural tendencies toward procrastination help with this process.)

While I have moved on from film to digital cameras, I still love the challenge of finding the right angle, composing the best photo, getting the light just the way I want it. I don’t alter any of my photos beyond the cropping that I could do with photos taken on film. I don’t even know how to use a Photoshop type program. That may come at some point, but for now, I haven’t finished exploring the world as I see it through that frame.

My work is eclectic . Some themes recur…concerns about war and peace, human rights, equity. But perspective intrigues me, as does a mix of colors, and the look on a person’s face. Things out of the ordinary and everyday things are here as well. My dad taught me early on to “fill the frame” and so my photos are often up close, so much so that they may only contains parts of things.

I hope I make people smile, and think, and perhaps do a double take or two. A few “aha’s” would be nice. But mostly I would like people to just enjoy.

Little does my father know that when he gave me that first camera, he set me on a path to becoming an artist. I just had to figure that out.

Thanks, Dad.

Carroll County artist Melinda Byrd updates us on her latest work

Carroll County artist Melinda Byrd updates us on her latest work

Greetings, Friends, Family, Fans, and Fun Folk,

Jan 25, 2009

Melinda Byrd (from Byrdcall Studio) here with an update of good things happening that you might like to know about. I have two big exciting ventures to tell you about:

I have joined with 19 other area artists to form an Artist Co-operative with a gallery-storefront off Main Street in Westminster, MD. We are calling our space “Off Track Art.” We are located just off the railroad tracks (by a few feet) at 11 Liberty St. accessible from the parking lot across the street from both O’Lordans and Johansson’s, next to the library.

Image me and 19 other artists showing some of our best works in a small gallery. We will take turns staffing the shop and share rent to make it all affordable. I’m very excited. We will be opening on Friday, Feb. 13th--yes, Friday the 13th in the afternoon (not sure yet of exact time—ask me later). Off Track Art will be open everyday except Sunday from noon to 6 or 7:00 PM. You probably know my work…just imagine 19 other exciting and stimulating artists all in one gallery!

The other big hoot for me is the fact that I am having my very first SOLO EXHIBITION of my multifaceted arts at the Scott Gallery at Carroll Community College (1601 Washington Rd., Westminster, MD). The opening reception will be Sunday, Feb. 15th from 2-4:00 PM. You are invited, of course! See the attached post card document which also has the image of one of my newest linocuts, “Three Fireflies” and all the details of the exhibit which runs through March 27th. There will be many never-seen-before pieces of my work. Please stop by at some point between Feb 15 and March 27. Please forward this info to anyone you know who might be interested.

Thirdly, I can foresee a very busy spring 2009, so I have decided (sadly) not to teach classes in my studio for teens and pre-teens this year.

Fortunately, my friend and fellow artist, Sarah Abel Deluca is working on her spring schedule which may include classes for this age group. I have to say, Sarah is an exceptional artist and teacher. I am currently taking a class from her at the Carroll Arts Center. Her work is currently being featured at the Arts Center (in the gallery to the right). She is very experienced teaching high school students, and welcomes the pre-teens too. Perhaps at her studio, or perhaps at your child’s school.

Feel free to give her a call or email if you have teens or pre-teens interested in developing their artistic abilities: 410.751.9259 or info@abelartist.com. Check out her work at : Click here: SARAH ABEL DELUCA, artist

And finally, remember I am here for you. My favorite thing is to create art that you will cherish for you. Whether it is a hand-printed shirt or a painting of your beloved pet or landscape…just call or email me!

I am looking forward to seeing you soon.

Peace and love,
Melinda

“Paintings discovered donated” by Bryan Schutt for the Carroll County Times

“Paintings discovered donated” by Bryan Schutt for the Carroll County Times

Paintings discovered, donated

By Bryan Schutt, Times Staff Writer, Thursday, August 28, 2008

About 40 years ago, an upstart family with an upstart painting business was visiting Westminster for work. Commissioned by the Westminster Bank and Trust Co. to create three paintings, the artist did his work, then left the city and hasn’t returned.

The artist, Cedric Egeli, painted the scene at Westminster City Hall, McDaniel’s Big Baker Chapel and the Carroll County’s Court House.

And now, Egeli’s work was recently donated to the city and will be prominently displayed at McDaniel College, in the county offices and in City Hall.

Capt. Gerry Frischkorn of the Westminster Police Department discovered the paintings about two weeks ago and he found out they were among the furnishings that were getting replaced at the old Westminster Union bank building on 117 E. Main St.

PNC acquired Mercantile Bank in 2007, which owned Westminster Union, and has since turned the building into a PNC location.

Instead of letting them sit around outside the offices of the building anymore, Frischkorn persuaded the bank to donate them to the city.

'Go Fish' exhibit is cool, fun, refreshing

Wide angle on Art in the Park

Botero's work filled with rich color

Art integral in all aspects of life

Society often overlooks artists' contributions
I watched the American Masters special "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song" debut on PBS a few weeks back. It's the story of 89 year-old Pete Seeger's life, but it's much more than that. It's the story of the power of music, and by extension, all of the ... Mar. 27, 2008

Kasey Keefer has grown up on the outskirts of the City of Westminster. He is a creative 17 year old who will soon become an Eagle Scout on May 28. Keefer is also a talented photographer.

“My Dad, Andy, has always been the family photographer for all five children for school, sports, and scouts,” Keefer remembered. “He has been an amateur photographer as long as I can remember. Anytime there is a family event, he is there taking his ‘15’ shots so that he can get the right one. He believes that someone will blink,” Keefer laughed. “Dad puts up with all the derisive comments on the length of time all this takes because he knows that everyone will love the photographs when they are finished.”

“I picked up some of his skills by being around him. One Christmas, my parents bought me a digital camera to take on my scout trips since I go so many places. After using for a while, I realized that I enjoyed taking photographs and that is when I got serious about it,” he said.

“One of the times I really started to play around with the camera and explore with it was when I went to The Bahamas High Adventure Seabase with the Boy Scouts,” Keefer said. “We met with the captain of a tall sailing ship who taught us how to sail.”

“For 10 days the Captain and 10 Boy Scouts sailed the ship around the Abaco Islands doing everything from swabbing the deck to raising sails. Sunsets, water, and native plants made great subjects. One evening the boat was keeled a little bit, and the flag was illuminated by the sunset. I had fun playing with that as a photographer.”

“After that, I started to shoot and learn more and more. I would read photo magazines, study other photographers’ work, and examine my own to figure out what I did or didn’t like about it, and what would make it better.”

“Last summer I went to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico with 12 Boy Scouts. I saved up and got a more capable camera for that trip. We backpacked through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains for ten days. It was just amazing. I was looking forward to that trip as a way to really take some good photos. The last day of the trip, we got up at 3:30 a.m. to climb to the top of Schaeffer’s Peak; we watched the sunrise as if it were a movie. Everyone was standing there, looking in the same direction, just waiting silently. I moved around and shot a series of photographs so I could stitch them into panoramas on the computer. That means I took the photographs, lined them up side by side on the computer screen, and made them into one long photo,” he said.

“Anything and everything is a possibility for a photo for me. Every time there is a sunset or an ice storm I would grab my camera and go outside and take photos. I would spend hours just shooting and learning. Now I take my camera everywhere with me. I do macro photography which means that you get really close to an object such as a flower or a leaf.”

“Currently, I want to keep shooting and learning about photography,” Keefer said. “I want to do a photo show and I have just started selling my work.”
