Church Leadership- Empowering Small Churches to BE The Church

Church Leadership- Empowering Small Churches to BE The Church

http://revsarahdorrance.wordpress.com/2014/02/07/church-leadership-empowering-small-churches-to-be-the-church/

We are at the dawn of a new age which we can no longer ignore. That new age is both exciting and scary at the same time. Church leaders can no longer do “Church the same old way.” We must talk differently, react differently and share differently in order to be relevant in this new age. While we must share differently, the message is still the same, “Jesus Christ, fully God and fully human, came into the world to save sinners like me.” So the Great Commission is still our mandate, but the way we fulfill that mandate has to be different.
Many outside the church believe that church has no relevance in their lives. How can we as the church not only show relevance, but introduce those outside the church to the saving grace of Jesus? Some outside the church might know Jesus already, but if they are outside of the church, then they are missing out on a big part of being followers of Jesus, and that is corporate worship and community.
This blog has been created as a resource for small churches. Small churches still have a huge impact on our communities and STILL can offer something that the large scale churches cannot provide

County's Seven Black Churches Small in Size, Large In Dedication

Black History Month February 1991 -- A Look at Carroll's Black Community

February 13, 1991|By Jane Lippy | Jane Lippy, Contributing writer

With 440 members led by four pastors, Carroll's seven black churches don't necessarily constitute a spiritual army.

But the congregations have been working to face the challenge of accomplishing as much as they can with the people power they have.
And the churches have their share of energetic members.

The Rev. Joan Carter serves as a suitable example of how the churches must get the most out of their resources.

The 32-year-old Carter is pastor of three churches: Union Street United Methodist Church in Westminster, Strawbridge United Methodist on Route 31 near New Windsor and Fairview United Methodist on Liberty Road in New Windsor.

Carter's busy Sundays begin at 9 a.m., when she meets Fairview's 30-member congregation before preaching. At 10:15, lay ministers start the service at Strawbridge, while Carter arrives 30 minutes later and addresses the 75 members until about 11:30.

Then, it's on to the 75-member congregation at Union Street. Members begin the service and Carter greets them at the conclusion of her message. Read more; http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1991-02-13/news/9113001502_1_two-churches-carter-black-churches

Lazarus Church has established an easy and secure way for our community to donate.

You may write a check and send it to the church's address: "Lazarus UCC" fund, Lazarus Church, 5101 S. Church St., Lineboro, MD 21102. Thank you for your generosity and your love - it is greatly and truly appreciated.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.    (Psalm 46:1-3)

On the Mason-Dixon Line in northern Carroll County, the historic town of Lineboro was awakened at 4:11 a.m. on Tuesday when the first alarm rang out that there was a fire in the 160-year-old Lazarus United Church of Christ and Lutheran Union Church. Two alarms and two hours later, the fire was declared under control.

In spite of the efforts of approximately 60 firefighters from Carroll and Baltimore counties and York County, Pa., the historic structure was a total loss.

According to research by historians Joe Getty and Mary Ann Ashcraft for the Historical Society of Carroll County, "Carroll County was strongly influenced by German Baptists, also known as Dunkards and later as Church of the Brethren, and by two denominations which worked closely together during those early years — Lutheran and Reformed (now known as United Church of Christ.)

Carroll has a history of natural disasters — snowstorms, floods, tornadoes, fires — that threaten our safety, health and welfare. Too often, these natural disasters find a church.

On June 19, 1952, a storm destroyed the St. John's Roman Catholic Church steeple on Main Street in Westminster.

On Feb. 19, 1893, a tornado destroyed the steeple at St. Paul's United Church of Christ at the corner of Green Street and Bond.

On April 9 and 10, 1883, an entire section of Westminster, from John Street to Carroll Street to Main Street, burned to the ground. All that was left of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street was a brick shell.

An article in the Baltimore Sun last Tuesday by Blair Ames and Carrie Wells reported, “The congregation itself dates to 1853, and was founded by members of Zion's Church in Manchester… poor roads had made the five-mile route from Lineboro to Manchester impassable for several months each year, so the faithful decided to build their own church.

“According to a 1939 Sun article, the original sanctuary was built through donation pledges from members — the largest recorded was $120 and the smallest ‘121/2 cents.’”

September 27, 1993 Baltimore Sun: Lineboro Lazarus Church marks 140 years of unity

Church marks 140 years of unity Lineboro congregations share memories

September 27, 1993|By Katherine Richards | Katherine Richards, Staff Writer

One hundred and forty years of working together through good times and bad were celebrated yesterday at the Lazarus Church in Lineboro.

The church is a "Union Church," home to both the Lazarus United Church of Christ and the Lazarus Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The two congregations have shared the building, Sunday school, choirs and 140 years of memories.

Ten former pastors of both congregations participated in the celebration, which was led by the Rev. Verna L. Call, pastor of the United Church of Christ congregation, and the Rev. Philip G. Emanuel, the Lutheran pastor.

Mr. Emanuel said yesterday's celebration was "a very affirming thing" for members of the dwindling Lutheran congregation, and demonstrated to them that "whatever comes about in the future, God will be with them."

The Lazarus Evangelical Lutheran Church has about 50 members. The Lazarus United Church of Christ congregation has about 220 members.

Wanda Waugh, chairwoman of the anniversary celebration committee, gathered an exhibit of photos and documents tracing the church's past.

The Lazarus church was founded in 1853 by members of Zion's Church in Manchester.

Bad roads had made the five-mile route from Lineboro to Manchester impassable for several months each year.

The congregation collected $2,171.49 3/4 to build a sanctuary, in donations as small as 12 1/2 cents.

A new building went up in 1908.

The church still displays two original altar Bibles dating to 1854, one in English, one in German. Read more: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1993-09-27/news/1993270109_1_congregations-lazarus-church-evangelical-lutheran-church

Church community in Lineboro grieves, gathers in wake of devastating fire

House of worship shared by two congregations lost in pre-dawn blaze

Sam Chamelin, pastor of the Lazarus United Church of Christ in Lineboro, lives just down the two-lane road from the historic church that anchors this rural community. On Tuesday, he could see the structure glowing in the morning light.

"Sam, the church is on fire," a parishioner had phoned to tell him.

Chamelin jumped in his car with a "sick feeling" and headed to the church, as many of its 175 parishioners would that day. The church, which traces its history to 1853 and expanded to its existing building in 1908, before sprinklers were required, was destroyed in the blaze… Read more: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/manchester-lineboro/bs-md-ca-church-fire-20131203,0,6821135.story
