Be sure to let us know if you are coming to “Koffee with Kevin.”

Be sure to let us know if you are coming to “Koffee with Kevin.”

May 3, 2019 by Kevin Dayhoff, kevindayhoff@gmail.com

Sherri and I are trying to figure out how much food to order for “Koffee with Kevin” on Saturday evening at Birdie’s Café on May 4th, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for light refreshments and conversation. Let us know if you are coming so that Sherri can make arrangements to have enough food available. We are looking forward to see you. For more information please see: https://www.facebook.com/events/294279461495454/ and please sign-in, if you have not already done so. THX

Keep in mind that there are no plans for a program, speeches or any mindless political drivel. Look upon it as an art opening without the artist talk.

Several of the other candidates have been invited. I like all of them – they are our community leaders. Everyone gets a participation trophy in this election. After the top three take their turn at the council table chances are the other three will continue to play a leadership role in the community. We hope.

Westminster has some tough challenges ahead and this is a good opportunity to get together and toss around a few ideas. There will be plenty of Birdie’s great coffee and light refreshments available. Many folks have asked for a get together to talk about the election. This is your chance.

It was suggested that we consult with our Ouija board about how many folks are coming. Earlier I had asked my Ouija board if Tupac is really dead or just ignoring my texts like usual? I mean, while he was alive, he created five studio albums – but he really did release five albums after he died in 1996.

However my board is still angry since I asked it, “Describe the history of the sociological, economic, psychological, and physiological progress of humankind in relationship to ethnomusicology and religious structure, from its origins to the present day; concentrating especially, but not exclusively, on its social, political, economic, religious, and philosophical impact on Europe, Asia, America, and Africa. Be brief, concise, and specific. It should rhyme, and be iambic pentameter. Do it in one paragraph; use semi-colons if needed.”

The planchette circled the board wildly and spelled-out "electric arc light." Well, according to multiple media accounts, in 1895, five-years after Charles Kennard, Helen Peters, “and several other investors started the Kennard Novelty Company to manufacture the [Ouija] board as a toy,” the big election issue was “electric lighting for the city,” according to historian Jay Graybeal.

Graybeal explained in research he documented in the late 1990s, “…through a vote of the citizenry, the use of street lighting by electric arc lamps was preferred. That is, the overwhelming majority of the 'Electric' ticket over the 'Gas' Ticket brought electric lights to our streets. To follow the press and certain actions on the part of our city fathers, it would indicate that Westminster took on new life immediately…”

So let’s celebrate the idea of Westminster taking on a new life after the election.

There is no charge for this event. For those who have asked – if you would like to make a contribution to help defray the costs of the event – speak with Sherri directly. I just want to concentrate on having a great event and I want to concentrate on the election campaign.

Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running trail

Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running trail

November 15, 2013 by Kevin Dayhoff

Yesterday I took a look at running at the Westminster Cemetery on North Church Street in Westminster.

In addition to the trails I discussed here on October 22, 2013, http://westminster.patch.com/groups/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog/p/fall-is-great-for-running-trails-in-carroll-co?yPos=0; I’ve been wondering how many other walking-running trail opportunities in the Carroll County area I have overlooked.

I mean, I walked the blacktop trails at the cemetery marveling at how many times I had visited the historic cemetery and really never considered it as a walking - running trail.

I saw many other walkers and runners. I did not measure any courses. That will be my next step. Although it is in the middle of Westminster, it was amusingly - and amazingly quiet, bucolic and serene. I grabbed a cup of coffee at Birdie's, http://www.birdiescoffee.com/, and really enjoyed a moment or two to myself - in the middle of town. LOL

Meanwhile, I hope to see many of you at the Terry Burk Wakefield Valley Community Trail memorial dedication service and 5K run on Saturday morning, November 16, 2013. Chai It Out — Here's the Scoop: Biride's versus The Cup

Chai It Out — Here's the Scoop: Biride's versus The Cup:

Hello lovely tea drinkers!
Today I went to Birdie’s Cafe and The Cup Tea Bar and interviewed the employees about the chai beverages served at each location. (Don’t worry, I made sure it was okay with them to post their answers online). Surprisingly enough, I got vastly different responses from the two of them, showing that a variety of chai beverages are available in a mere two minute car ride... http://chaitout.tumblr.com/post/62263771496/heres-the-scoop-birides-versus-the-cup

Chai It Out — Chai Around Town: Westminster, Maryland

It’s getting to be that time of year again when a nice cup of something hot and a warm sweater goes a long way. On these brisk Fall days and nights a cup of Chai tea is a perfect solution to warm you up. Looking for a nice place to go sit with your favorite book while enjoying your delicious cup of tea? Here is a list of some Cafe’s in Westminster that serve Chai. Chai them out and make sure you tell them how much you appreciate their Chai-ness ;)
Let’s begin with Birdies Cafe located at 233 East Main Street, Westminster, MD 21157. This is the perfect place to cozy up with a Chai Latte…add in vanilla or hazelnut for a new flavor. Prices are on the cheaper size and they have three different sizes. Looking for a cold treat? Try their snowbird, which compares to a frap. Homemade whipped cream on top and you are all set! check out their website www.birdiescoffee.com
Moving on to Cup Tea Bar also located on Main Street at 7 East Main Street Westminster, MD 21157. This is a newer cafe and is great for all tea lovers! Take a seat at the bar and watch as they prepare your cup of tea in front of you. There are a variety of options here for Chai…you won’t be disappointed. www.cupteabar.com
