On Nov. 14, the Westminster Road Runners Club and
Westminster City Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor the annual
Terry Burk Sam Case 5K on the Wakefield Valley Trail — better known to older
local runners as the Terry Burk Trail.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of
Burk, a popular runner and the second generation owner of a family candy store,
the Treat Shop in Westminster.
Burk was struck by a car and killed while jogging with
friends on Route 97 at Kalten Road on Aug. 10, 1995. He was only 48 years old.
Sam Case was among the original members of the Westminster
Road Runners Club… http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-ce-archives-green-space-20151104-story.html

Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running trail
Exploring the Westminster Cemetery as a walking-running
trail
November 15, 2013 by Kevin Dayhoff
Yesterday I took a look at running at the Westminster
Cemetery on North Church Street in Westminster.
In addition to the trails I discussed here on October 22,
2013, http://westminster.patch.com/groups/kevin-e-dayhoffs-blog/p/fall-is-great-for-running-trails-in-carroll-co?yPos=0;
I’ve been wondering how many other walking-running trail opportunities in the
Carroll County area I have overlooked.
I mean, I walked the blacktop trails at the cemetery
marveling at how many times I had visited the historic cemetery and really
never considered it as a walking - running trail.
I saw many other walkers and runners. I did not measure any
courses. That will be my next step. Although it is in the middle of
Westminster, it was amusingly - and amazingly quiet, bucolic and serene. I
grabbed a cup of coffee at Birdie's, http://www.birdiescoffee.com/,
and really enjoyed a moment or two to myself - in the middle of town. LOL

Readers, I hope you're sitting down. If you aren't, please do so. I'll give you all some extra time, since I know many of you recently ran a long race.
Good? Good. Here, then, is today's bit of running advice:
If you intend to run a marathon, you should train for it first.
Sorry if I just blew your mind. And I apologize to Remy's World readers whocould have used this information before Sunday's New York City Marathon.
Anyway, this news comes to us via Fox News's Fox & Friends, which aired a segment Saturday titled "Busting Marathon Myths." In it, cohosts Tucker Carlson and Clayton Morris lob assertions over a glass-top table toward a guy called Dr. Marc Siegel ("MEDICAL A-TEAM"), who proceeds to bat down the ones that are bunk and affirm the ones that are not. Also there's a recurring joke about Snickers bars.
Halfway through, we get to the bit where Mr. Morris asks, with an innocence that's endearing to watch, whether it's really necessary to, you know, actually prepare for a 26.2-mile footrace:

Crawford Captures Burk 5K
On a delightful Saturday morning--when far too many were
either recovering from the night before, running cross-country races somewhere
else, or prepping for longer races, David Crawford cruised to a narrow win in
the second annual Burk Memorial 5K run, held on and around Tahoma Farm Road
west of Westminster.
The race is named for candy store owner, runner, and club sponsor
Terry Burk, who was killed nine years ago last August when hit by a car which
veered off Route 97 onto the shoulder at the entry to Kalten Acres.
Prizes for this year's run were gift certificates to the
Treat Shop--his former business, located in the mall across from the movies.
The current owner contributed a portion of the cost of the prizes.
The race was originally meant to be conducted along the
walking, hiking, biking, running trail which was to be constructed on a line
parallel to Route 31 and proceeding from Uniontown Road to the Old New Windsor
Pike, a distance of some 3 to 4 miles.
According to Kevin Dayhoff, Westminster mayor and WRRC
member, the process of obtaining the necessary land and construction permits
has been about as much fun as root canal work without a painkiller.
Thus with only a small portion of the trail, to have been
named for Terry Burk, finished, this race involves running an out-and-back portion
on Tahoma Farm Road, followed by two loops around a neighborhood, using the
completed portion of the Burk Trail as part of the loop.
The field of 14 sprightly runners charged up Tahoma Farm
Road, and by the time they returned to begin the first portion of the Burk
Trail, Crawford--who works for the Department of Defense at Fort Myer, located
near the Pentagon--was locked in a tight race with Tom Yinger, much younger and
more local.
At the end of the first trail loop and at the finish line
Crawford had a small but definite lead and won by six seconds.
At age 54 he equaled the age of Joe Loveland as the oldest
runner ever to have won a club race. Since Crawford missed the awards ceremony
because he was out riding his racing bike, there is no way of telling whether
he is older than Loveland was when Loveland won for the second time at age 54.
Since there is no easy way of determining the oldest winner, Joe agreed to
retain the title.
Joe finished third after running most of the way with
Chrissy Pennington, who finished as the second female in the 5K run held at the
Carroll Hospital Center on September 25, the day before she ran and finished in
the female top ten at the Bachman Valley Half-Marathon.
Trailing Chrissy by three and a half minutes was
Treasurer-for-Life Liuda Galinaitis, who outkicked Chris Reese for second place.
As is usually the case in club races, the majority of the
field, 11 of 14, were in the masters (40 and over category). As a measure of
changing times, however, this race involved 7 runners in the 50-59 category, as
well as the recently turned 60 Skip Fennell.
The next club race will be the Otterdale Mill 5 Mile Run--to
be held on Sunday, October 24. The starting line is near the corner of
Trevanion Road and Stonesifer Road, west of Crouse Ford in Taneytown. For more
information contact Dan Replogle at 410-756-1654.

730 Tahoma Farm Road:
In a November 7, 2013 article I wrote for the Baltimore Sun, http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/carroll/westminster/ph-ce-eagle-archives-1103-20131111,0,434181.story,
I reported, "Over the years the eight-foot wide paved Wakefield Trail, the
city's first hiking and biking trail, has developed one leg at a time, inspired
in part by the legacy of Burk, who ran with the Road Runners Club for many
years. Today, the 2.1 mile linear park trail extends from Long Valley Road to
Uniontown Road. Planning began in earnest for the trail in 1994."
