F. David Schaeffer, 96, of Westminster, MD, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 surrounded by his loving family at Brightview Westminster Ridge in Westminster. Born June 9, 1920 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Noah Luther and Elizabeth Gilmore (Slagle) Schaeffer. He was the husband of Hilda M. “Bobbye” (McDaniel) Schaeffer, to whom he was married for 72 years.

David graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1937 with Cum Laude honors. While attending Gettysburg College, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and was selected to join the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He graduated in 1941 earning a B.A. degree in Economics with Magna Cum Laude honors.

Upon graduation from Gettysburg College, David received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army from his ROTC training. He trained at various Army camps, including Camp Van Dorn, MS, where he met his future wife, Bobbye McDaniel of Baton Rouge, LA, at a USO dance.

While training with the 63rd Infantry Division, David was ordered to report to the Tenth Army at Fort Sam Houston, TX to train for the invasion of Okinawa toward the end of World War II. He remained in the Army Reserve as Lt. Colonel until 1953. He was a member of Westminster American Legion Post 31 and VFW Post 467.        

David was co-owner of the former Schaeffer Lumber Company in Westminster, a business that he opened with his father and brother in 1946. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, gardening, and spending time with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughter, Dianne S. Bennett and husband Michael of Taneytown; sons, David “Mac” Schaeffer and wife Mary Ellen Melchiorre of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Lloyd Schaeffer and wife Cindy of Gettysburg, PA; grandsons, Jason Bennett and wife Laura of Westminster, and Matthew Schaeffer and wife Kimberly of Chantilly, VA; great-granddaughters, Brooke and Mackenzie Bennett, and Jaiden and Kennedy Schaeffer; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Edgar A. Schaeffer, and grandsons, Daniel and Steven Schaeffer.

A Funeral Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis Street, Westminster, MD with the Rev. Kevin Clementson officiating. Interment will follow at Kriders Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St, Westminster, MD, 21157, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Carroll H. Staggs, Jr., 75, of Westminster, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, August 1, 2015 at Carroll Hospital Center.

Coach Staggs was my Westminster Junior High School basketball coach and my science teacher. He was wonderful in both positions.

As a science teacher he helped instill and reinforce what would become a life-long interest in botany – and later horticulture. I later made a meager living farming by raising nursery stock and often thought of Coach Stagg’s science classes…

He was friendly, kind and passionate about his work and it was infectious.

As for basketball; I loved to play basketball but alas, in the end I was such a horrible basketball player that I later turned to wrestling for a winter sport in high school.

But I will always remember that he once put me in a basketball game in the old Taneytown High School gym. I was thrilled. Bill Fourhman passed the ball to Mark Causey who passed the ball to me and I scored a bucket. The only two points I ever scored in competitive high school basketball in my entire life. Thanks to the kindness and passion of Coach Staggs who put me in the game even when it was obvious that I could not dribble a basketball and breathe at the same time.

Visitation at the Myers Durboraw Funeral Home was quite hard. There were many pictures from the 1960s that caused a flood of memories of the Westminster I knew growing-up in the 1950s and 1960s. It was a friendly and affirming small town where we cared for each other and looked after each other. We were somewhat isolated and probably quite naive.

The war in Vietnam had not quite hit home and challenges of urban strife could only be found in the pages of the News American, or the Morning and Evening Sun – I was a Morning Sun person…

Westminster was a friendly and fun town unfettered by the hastiness of today’s day-to-day subsistence existence. This was long before the oustlanders– the newcomers - came to Westminster and Carroll County to call to our attention all our shortcomings and save us from ourselves. It was not a perfect town. There is no such thing. But my memories of growing-up in Westminster are perfect. And a legion of folks like Coach Staggs helped make it perfect.

According to Coach Staggs’ obituary:

Born December 6, 1939 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Carroll H. Staggs, Sr. and Mary Fern Tressler Staggs.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Waltraut Flender Staggs.

Carroll was a graduate of Frostburg State Teachers College with a degree in Education and earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Frostburg. 

He loved teaching, and was a Science teacher at East and West Middle Schools for 38 years, where he coached middle school basketball. 

He was very passionate about his church and family and was a very active member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, serving as the Usher Coordinator, chair of the Worship and Witness Committee, Past President of the Consistory and rang the bell on Memorial Day.  

Carroll was very active in the Carroll County Education Association and was a representative of CCEA Retired Teachers.  He was a member of Carroll County Old Timers Baseball Association and was an avid sports fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates and attended many local high school and college basketball games. 

He was always looking out for others and was willing to lend a helping hand.  Other loves were spending time outdoors, tending to his garden, fishing and hunting.  He travelled on bus trips, attended dinner theatres, and enjoyed having breakfast with family and friends.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Laura McClelland and husband, William, of Finksburg; son, Jeffrey Staggs and wife, Theresa, of Westminster; brother, David Staggs of Frostburg; nieces and nephews, and a great-niece.  He was predeceased by a brother, Roger Staggs.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 5th at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 17 Bond Street, Westminster, with his pastor, Reverend Marty Kuchma, officiating.  Burial will be private in Deer Park Methodist Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 91 Willis St, Westminster, MD.  

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the St. Paul's U.C.C., 17 Bond Street, Westminster, MD  21157, American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312 or to the National Kidney Foundation  1301 York Road Suite 404, Lutherville, MD   21093.

Thomas Lee “Tom” Andrews, 56, of Westminster,
died February 13, 2015 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson.

Born December 15, 1958 in Harford County, he was the son of the late Leonard D. and Rena Thompson Andrews. He was the husband of Terry Palino Andrews, whom he married June 3, 2012.

Tom was the owner/operator of Towne Shoe Repair on Main Street, Westminster, for 25 years. He served as the current Commander of the Sons of the American Legion for Carroll Post 31, where he also was a Legion Rider. He was a member of the Men's Auxiliary for Molleville Farm Post 467 VFW, a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 2226 in Littlestown, PA, and was a past president for the Eagles Aerie that was in Westminster.

He enjoyed riding his motorcycles, collecting music boxes, volunteering for events at Carroll Post 31 and VFW Post 467, where he chaired the motorcycle shows for the last 4 years. He especially enjoyed getting away to West Virginia. As a member of a large family, he enjoyed keeping everyone connected.

Surviving in addition to his wife is son James Richard Lee Andrews of Westminster; step-daughter Amber Jean Kilgalen of Westminster; siblings and spouses Bertha “Sissy” Leppo and husband Robb of Westminster, Jerry Andrews and wife Cindy of Johnstown, PA, Kay Strawsburg of Gettysburg, PA, and James O. Andrews, Sr. and wife Maria of Westminster. He was the son-in-law of Nancy Kaufman and Bertha Palino; brother-in-law of Georgette Andrews, Debbie Palino, Billy Kaufman and wife Linda, Dorothy L. Huffman and husband Gene, and Andrea Palino; and grandchildren Aeryelle and Atreyu Andrews.

He was predeceased by his brother Leonard Andrews, fathers-in-law Lee Palino and Edward L. Kaufman III and brothers-in-law Tom Strawsburg and Michael Palino.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Rd., Westminster. Carroll Post 31 and the Sons of the American Legion will hold a joint service in the evening.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. with Deacon Joe officiating. Interment will follow in Meadow Branch Cemetery, Westminster.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Carroll Post 31 American Legion, 2 Sycamore St., Westminster, MD 21157 or to Molleville Farm Post 467 VFW, 519 Poole Rd., Westminster, MD 21157.
