It only took about 120 years, but an 1891 graduate of then-Western Maryland College, now McDaniel, recently made a donation to the college.

It was announced at McDaniel College's recent trustee-faculty dinner that about $6.7 million from the estate of 1891 alumnus Philip Henry Dorsey, of St. Clements Bay, will be used to establish an endowment for scholarships, according to information provided by the college.

This is the largest bequest for scholarships in the college's history. In contrast to the college's finances in the 1890s, one can only imagine how Dorsey's classmates would marvel at the size of the donation, especially since the first 25 years of the college were fraught with concern over the school's debt.

Local historian Dr. Jim Lightner said in an interview that Dorsey was one of 18 students to earn a bachelor's degree from the college in 1891. The college's total enrollment at the time was 154, he said.

“Carolyn and Robert Scott jointly received the Westminster Rotary Club's Citizen of the Year Award for 20U,only the fourth time the award has gone to a couple in the 50 years it has been given. Noting that the couple had previously received the Philanthropist Family of the Year Award from the Community Foundation of Carroll County.

“Awards Chair James Lightner listed decades of service by each recipient on numerous boards and with charitable organizations. There are eight social sororities and fraternities on campus. But there are also two lesser known service groups: APO, a service fraternity, and Gamma Sigma Sigma, a service sorority (although both are coed). Last night, Gamma Sigma Sigma held their Meet the Sisters event. Now I know, there are many reservations and assumptions that come with the “Greek” title, and I had many of my own. I chose Gamma Sig because not only did it look great on my resume, but it actually was a great deal of fun getting to know this wide variety of girls. My MIT (member-in-training) class even had three guys, the first in several years). But more than that, this organization is focused on serving the community through volunteer service for great local groups.

In addition to teaching at McDaniel College Professor Boukhars is also a Carnegie Endowment Nonresident Scholar. The program aired on C-Span.

Carroll Co Chapter NAACP, McDaniel, and Carroll Community College celebrate Martin Luther King with music

Along with 80 other folks from throughout Carroll County, including a broad cross section of local elected officials; I attended the 10^th annual Carroll County NAACP Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast at Martin’s Westminster.

Though Jan. 21 was a school holiday for students around the country, a number of students were on a school campus earlier this week.

McDaniel College welcomed nearly 100 Carroll County schoolchildren on Monday to the fourth annual Martin Luther King Day of celebration and reflection.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., students of all ages participated in a variety of activities that celebrated King's life and provided a service to the community.

Carroll County Community College also provided supplies for the students to make cards for senior citizens as a service project.

"We recognize Dr. King's accomplishments and methods of nonviolence and his service to the community," said Pamela Zappardino, co-director of Ira and Mary Zepp Center for Non-violence and Peace Education, about the event. "It is a day on, rather than a day off. A component of the day is doing a service project."

The center at McDaniel College was a sponsor of the event, as was the NAACP.

"These things are always fun," Zappardino said. "The kids are great."
