Excellent article by Jon Kelvey on Sam Riley’s history presentation on Carroll County Md. history

Excellent article by Jon Kelvey on Sam Riley’s history presentation at the Historical Society of Carroll County celebration of Carroll County’s 180th birthday

Political rancor existed before Carroll County's birthday 180 years ago

The celebration of Carroll County's 180th birthday on Saturday was a couple of days belated: Carroll County was legally formed from portions of Baltimore and Frederick counties on Jan. 19, 1837.

Not that that was a problem for keynote speaker Sam Riley, president of Union Mills Homestead Foundation. Coming a day after the presidential inauguration, Riley saw an opportunity to tie the politics of today to the politics of the past, which he noted were often just as fraught and ill-tempered as today.

"Throughout our history, we've had these very tough elections," he said. "At the end of it all, despite all the nasty things we say about each other, somebody is forced to govern and figure out where to build roads and bridges."

About 50 to 60 people came out to Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster to hear Riley's presentation on one of Carroll County's pioneering families, the Shrivers, and the political debates of their times.

Iowa caucuses reveal media lapses - By MARTIN SCHRAM Scripps Howard News Service

COMMENTARY

Iowa caucuses reveal media lapses

By MARTIN SCHRAM Scripps Howard News Service

Monday, January 9, 2012

Iowa's 2012 Republican caucuses gave us either two winners or no winners at all, as in Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum virtually tied and Ron Paul finished just a whisker behind them.

And in the only total that really matters, but was little mentioned, all three received seven of Iowa's Republican convention delegates.

But America's inexplicably traditional first voting told us something important, not really about those running for president but about those of us who cover them: When we don't really report, you can't really decide.

First, recall the wall-to-wall news coverage of Iowa's meaningless (except for political party money-making) Republican straw poll last August.

As all the pols and their handlers learned decades ago, you can win it by spending more money to bus in and feed more of your own people who will vote for you. Last August, Michele Bachmann won.

Tuesday night, she finished last among Iowa's real caucus combatants.

Second, we turn to what Americans most need from the news media: our journalistic skill and determination to go far beyond what the candidates are emphasizing to make the sale with voters.

At least by examining their past deeds as deeply as we covered that meaningless straw poll.

Election Day Food Drive to support Carroll County Food Sunday

Election Day Food Drive to support Carroll County Food Sunday

PRESS RELEASE October 25, 2010

For Immediate Release
Contact: Martin Radinsky 443-520-7750

Westminster, MD - October 25, 2010 –

This election, Carroll County is going to continue a unique tradition started with the November 2008 election.

Martin Radinsky, Frank Baylor, Kelly Buie, Bob Mitchell, David and Laura O’Callaghan have once again organized the election day food drive during the upcoming Maryland General Election on November 2, 2010 to support Carroll County Food Sunday.

Our goal is, with volunteer support, to have staffed collection boxes at the polling places, respecting all electioneering laws.

The community service event will be conducted in a non-partisan fashion and volunteers will be asked not to engage in political activity while collecting for Carroll County Food Sunday.  We welcome the support from all organizations, political clubs, candidates, and political parties in helping to feed our neighbors in need in Carroll County.

Radinsky said that in November 2008, Carroll County voters filled seven 150-cubic foot containers with donated food.

“We want to build (the food collection effort) into a Carroll County habit for elections in the future,” said Radinsky.  “When and where else in Carroll County are you going to get 50,000 (people) in one place…?  If only half of all the voters in Carroll County brought one can of food each; that’s 25,000 cans of food….”

Radinsky said that every candidate with whom he has spoken has been very supportive of the Carroll County voter food drive.  Hopefully all the candidates will take the opportunity to spread the word.

Election Day is a wonderful day to celebrate being an American.  Bringing along a can of food will help make sure that no one in our community goes hungry.

Should you wish to volunteer to assist in this community service project please email Martin Radinsky at maradinsky@comcast.net or call 443-520-7750.

Carroll County Food Sunday will offer "Community Service Hours" for any student wishing to volunteer their time.

Carroll County Food Sunday distributes from the following county sites - WESTMINSTER: from 10 to 11:15 am and 1 to 2:15 pm, Tuesday through Thursday, and 9 am to 11:30 am, Saturday at 10 Distillery Drive (ground floor). TANEYTOWN: from 9:30 to 11:15 am, Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 44 Frederick Street. SYKESVILLE: from 10 am to noon, Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Freedom Avenue and Liberty Roads. This organization is run by volunteers, and is always in need of additional volunteer help. Donations of money and/or food are gladly accepted.
