Updated 9:30pm January 6, 2015— A 12-year veteran of the Maryland fire and EMS service was lost Tuesday after being struck by a fire department utility truck assisting him at the scene of an accident, officials said.

Erik Steciak, 29, a paid paramedic with the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, was pronounced dead at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air after being transported from the scene.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Steciak had been a paid paramedic with the Bel Air VFC since December 2011 and also worked as a Supervisor/Paramedic with Special Event Medical Services since 2009. He was a volunteer Captain at the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department in Howard County where he served since 2005. He was also formerly a volunteer EMT at the Ellicott City Volunteer Fire Department.

Early in the day, the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Department released a preliminary statement – then later in the day, after the family had been notified, the department released the name of the line of duty death to be that of Paramedic Erik Steciak, 29. Paramedic Steciak was a paid EMS employee who worked for the BAVFC since December 2011.

The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company regrets to announce the line of duty passing of Paramedic Erik Steciak, 29. Paramedic Steciak was a paid EMS employee who worked for the BAVFC since December 2011.

He was also an active member of the West Friendship Volunteer Fire Company in Howard County, MD where he served as Captain and paramedic.

The Board of Directors, Officers and Members of the BAVFC express their sincerest condolences to Erik’s family and to the West Friendship VFC. Funeral services will be posted once final arrangements are completed.

1/6/14: At 1350hrs the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a motor vehicle collision with injury in the 300blk of Patterson Mill Rd.

It was reported that a vehicle had run off the roadway into an embankment and the injured subject was in a nearby residence.

On fire department arrival it was determined that the best access to the patient was via four wheel drive assist due to the extreme weather and driveway conditions. Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company Utility 373, a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD equipped with a snow plow responded for the four wheel drive request.

As the utility vehicle proceeded down the driveway it began to slide. At some point during the slide a member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, a paramedic provider, was struck by the utility.

He was treated at the scene and transported in grave condition to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a preliminary investigation into this non traffic related fatality. Indications point to weather being a major factor in this incident.

Fire truck hits, injures man By Sean Barry News-Post Staff January 6th, 2003

BRADDOCK HEIGHTS -- A fire engine slid down a steep, snowy road Sunday, striking and critically injuring a pedestrian before rolling over and injuring three firefighters, police said.

John Main, 44, of Middletown, had gotten out of his car to help another motorist when he was hit by Braddock Heights Volunteer Fire Co.'s Engine 121, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Mr. Main was listed in critical condition Sunday night at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown. The firefighters had lesser injuries.

The accident occurred about 10:25 a.m. when the engine slid down Old Swimming Pool Road near South Clifton Road as the crew was responding to a two-car crash, sheriff's Sgt. Tom Winebrenner said.

The cars were blocking the roadway, and the engine failed to stop because of the steep grade and the snowy conditions, Sgt. Winebrenner said.

The engine, a 1992 Grumman with its lights and siren activated, rotated sideways before leaving the roadway and striking Mr. Main, Sgt. Winebrenner said.

The engine then rolled down an embankment, coming to rest on its wheels, Sgt. Winebrenner said.

Firefighter William Lenhart, 68, the driver, and Chief Patrick McTighe, 25, the front passenger, were treated and released at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Firefighter Jamie Daily, 25, in the rear seat, was listed in stable condition at Washington County Hospital.

Chief McTighe didn't respond to a request to be interviewed. Others at the station declined comment.

The extent of damage to the fire engine was not clear.

Mr. Main is a Hawbottom Road resident. He has worked in landscaping and lawn service.

Born August 15, 1942, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Francis Joseph and Doris Jeanne Fitzgerald Spangler. He was the loving husband of Patricia “Pat” Spangler whom he was married to for 52 years.

He attended St. Johns High School until the 10th grade where he then went to work for his father at Spangler's Market in Finksburg as a teenager. He was later employed with Rowan Controller and Maryland Cup. He was also an independent owner, operator truck driver, and then worked for Roadway Express Inc. both in Westminster and Hagerstown for over thirty years until his retirement. He was a member of the Teamsters Local Union #557.

He joined the Reese and Community Volunteer Fire Company in 1961 where he was a life member with over 50 years of service. He was also a member of the Carroll County Hall of Fame. He served the company in many roles including: Trustee, Corresponding Secretary, Chairman of the Board, Captain, Chief from 1984-85, and President of the Fire Department for over 14 years. He was also an Apparatus Driver for many years. He was a Delegate to the Carroll County Fireman’s Association and the Maryland State Fireman’s Associations serving on different committees for both organizations. He was very active in fundraising for the fire department and helped with bingo, the annual fireman carnival, and many benefit feeds and banquets.

He played on the Reese Fire Department slow pitch softball team and also enjoyed playing golf.

Surviving in addition to his wife are Son, Joseph E. Spangler Jr. and wife Patricia Lynn (Condon) Spangler, of Owings Mills; Daughter, Janet Marie (Spangler) Saunders and husband Michael Saunders of Ellicott City; Grandchildren, Michelle, Jonathan, and Chelsea; brothers, James Spangler and Thomas Spangler; and sister Bette Hoffman.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 8pm at the social hall of the Reese and Community Volunteer Fire Company, 1745 Baltimore Blvd., Westminster, MD 21157, where a Fire Company Memorial Service will be held at 8pm.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11am at the Reese and Community Volunteer Fire Company with Deacon Charles Barnhart Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

Memorial donations may be made, in his name, to the Reese Volunteer Fire Company or to the American Diabetes Association, Suite#110, 2002 Clipper Park Rd., Baltimore, MD 21211.

Tonight's Duty Crew was dedicated to Ryan Payne. Ryan joined the department as a junior member while still in middle school. After high school Ryan joined the United States Marine Corp and served as a tank commander.

After serving our nation for four years, Ryan returned to Westminster and rejoined the company. In a week Ryan along with his wife and son will be moving to South Carolina where he will be attending college.

The July 3, 1938 Smith and Reifsnider fire caused serious concerns in Westminster

Seventy years ago, Carroll County was still reeling from the aftermath of fireworks of an unwelcome variety - one of the biggest fires in the county’s history – the July 3, 1938 Smith and Reifsnider fire on John Street.

Ironically, today, the property where the fire occurred has been occupied by the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department since October 24, 1998.

On July 8, 1938, the now-out-of-print Democratic Advocate newspaper carried a front page story headlined by: “The Blaze Was of Incendiary Origin--Fear Was Entertained That the Fire Would Go To Main Street, But Was Confined to the Yard--16 Fire Departments With 19 Pieces of Apparatus Poured Tons of Water on the Blaze and Was Conquered After Three Hours' Battle--Several Firemen Overcome--Chief Brown and All Firemen Are commended for Their Heroic Accomplishment--The Loss is Heaviest in the County's History.”

The first paragraph of the news article immediately shows the concern of the community. It read “Westminster citizens had the scare of the their life time Saturday night when a fire from an incendiary origin was discovered in the lumber yard of Smith & Reifsnider, which caused an undetermined loss, but estimated at $125,000.”

At the time the company was solely owned by Mr. John L. Reifsnider, Jr. According the article, Mr. Reifsnider; fed the firefighters “sandwiches and coffee at the American Restaurant after the fire was brought under control.”

The first fire alarm was sounded at 11:45 p.m. by the night watchman John Baile and the two pieces of firefighting equipment, owned by the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department at the time, responded.

The fire department chief at the time was Leroy Brown. He immediately put in a call for additional help. Firefighters from Union Bridge, Hampstead; Manchester, Taneytown, Pleasant Valley, Sykesville, Emmitsburg, Catonsville, Reisterstown, Owings Mills, Glyndon, and Pikesville responded.

Union Bridge arrived in 14 minutes; slightly before Reisterstown, “who also broke all records for speed.” The newspaper estimated that more than 200 volunteers fought the flames, using an “estimated 17,000 feet fire hose…”

The article was also meticulous in reporting where each piece of firefighting apparatus obtained water. Hampstead arrived with two trucks which hooked-up at the railroad and Cover’s Stock Yards. Manchester “coupled up at Klee’s Garage...”

Chief Brown was praised for “his masterly generalship” in bringing the fire, “which was a raging furnace,” under control by 3 a.m.

“Every fireman fought as if it depended upon his life, knowing if the fire was not held in the lumber where it started the city was in for a big loss and would sweep to Main street. A high wind kept blowing the debris over the city and fear was entertained for the buildings in its path, but citizens protected their homes and buildings by pouring water on the roofs.”

Firefighting, to this day, remains dangerous business. It was certainly no different 70 years ago and the newspaper went to great lengths to report upon the firefighters who were injured fighting the blaze.

“William McCoy, a volunteer fireman from the Sykesville company, was overcome by smoke and burned about the face and hands. Dr. S. Luther Bare set up an emergency station and treated McCoy and the others. One fireman from the Hampstead company, suffered a broken nose and three others from the same company were burned … (O)ther firemen were treated for slight burns and returned to fight the blaze…”

The four Hampstead firefighters who were injured included Hampstead Fire Chief John W. Murray and "Bud" Arbaugh, who were overcome by smoke. Charles R. Williams and Oscar Armacost suffered cuts and bruises… and Stewart Thompson bruised.

The Maryland State Police “were rushed to the scene immediately to handle the traffic… One autoist was arrested when he ran his car over a line of hose… The reflection of Saturday night's fire brought people from York, Hanover, McSherrystown and Frederick. The crowd was estimated at about 5,000 that watched the firemen from the railroad tracks and surrounding points.”

To this day, the constant vigilance and protection of volunteer firefighters remains the same. Please keep the selfless public servants who protect us, in your prayers, as you celebrate a safe summer with friends and family.

Earl Kenneth Lookingbill, age 76, of Taneytown, died peacefully at his home Friday, December 30, 2011 with his family by his side. Born January 7, 1935 in Taneytown, he was the son of the late George & Edna Legore Lookingbill. He was the husband of Linda Bull Lookingbill.

He spent 20 years as a Baltimore County firefighter and 55 years as a volunteer with the Taneytown Fire Company. He was a life-member of the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company and served as past-chief & past-president. He also worked for Stambaugh Excavating for 15 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a life-member of AMVETS Post 172 in Fairfield, PA. He enjoyed Friday-night poker, traveling, camping, and spending time with friends & family, especially his 4 grandsons.

Firefighters from all across Carroll County gathered at the Haight Funeral Home in Sykesville on Sunday to celebrate the life of Calvin Warren Brothers, 79, of Finksburg, who died Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

The service was conducted by the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association Chaplain, Deacon Charles Barnhart, of whom many emergency services personnel turn to in times of trouble or grief in Carroll County.

Barnhart began the service by saying, “My friends, we have gathered here to praise God and to witness our faith as we celebrate the life of Calvin Brothers. We come together in grief, acknowledging our human loss. May God grant us grace, that in pain we may find comfort, in sorrow hope, in death resurrection.”

Brothers wore many different hats in the greater Carroll County community and many folks knew him well by his steadfast community leadership in the many responsibilities he took upon himself. The one common thread is that he did everything well and no matter how difficult the task, he was always a good friend to everyone.

He was born February 2, 1932 in Finksburg, and was the son of the late Ernest Claude and Amelia I. Ward Brothers. He was the husband of the late Carol Ann Baumes Brothers, who died in 2010.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, who served in Korea. He was a member of the Westminster VFW, Westminster Moose, and the Westminster American Legion.

He worked for many years for Luther L. Brothers Builders and later as the Chief Building Inspector for Carroll County.

Others knew him well as a volunteer with Carroll County 4H and FFA programs where he once served as the Chair of the Board for the Carroll County 4H and FFA Fair.

Folks gathered Sunday evening to celebrate Brothers’ service to our community as a volunteer firefighter. In May 1964, after several devastating fires in the Gamber area of Carroll County, the Gamber and Community Fire Company was organized. According to an old newspaper article, “Two months after the company established itself, Calvin Brothers joined up. His uncle, a member, recruited him. ‘Between 1965 and 1975, this was a very small company,’ he said. ‘It didn't seem like we were going to go too far.’”

But through the hard work of Brothers and countless other community leaders, the upstart fire company has gone far over the years.

“By 1965, the company purchased land and a building at the intersection of Md. 32 and Md. 91, and ordered the first piece of fire equipment…”

Here, Barnhart picked-up the story of Brothers’ work for our community at his memorial service. Brothers “gave his volunteer spirit for 46 years.” He was the company president for a total of eleven-years in five different decades.

Over the years, in addition to serving as a delegate to the Carroll County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, and member of numerous committees, he also served as Gamber fire chief, first vice-president for four years, second vice-president for three years, and a member of the board of directors for an additional four years.

He also served as president of the county firefighters’ association from 1992-1993 and was elected to the Carroll County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Hall of Fame in 1990.

Barnhart spoke for many when he said, “There is so much to share about Calvin’s dedication to” the Gamber volunteer fire company. “His personality and devotion will never be forgotten. In every role, Calvin touched your lives with charm and wit, with courage and hope, with kindness and love. And I’m sure that it was a great reunion at the heavenly gate when Calvin arrived this past Wednesday…

“Calvin became for all, the model of what it means to be an honest hard working sensitive adult. And now, as long as you live in the memory of his witness and faith, he will always live through you…

“We have been blessed with various gifts of service. We give thanks for the life of Calvin W. Brothers and say thank you for his 46 years of service to the Gamber and Community Volunteer Fire Company and the Gamber community. We are grateful for his time and commitment for the betterment of others.”

According to attribute ob the fire company website by Gamber fire company treasurer Clay Myers, Brothers was the husband of Carol Ann Brothers who died in 2010. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Jen and Chad Dean of Odenton, sons and daughter-in-law Rick Bartels of Glen Burnie, and John and Alisha Bartels of Gamber.

Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law Robert Brothers of Gamber, Luther L. and Eva M. Brothers of Gamber, and Carl Melvin and Bonnie Brothers of Traverse City, MI, sister Joan Gist of Gamber, and grandchildren Kera Jefcoat, Kaitlyn Crabtree, Tyler Bartels and Olivia Hope Bartels, and great grandson Layton Jefcoat.

He was predeceased by his sisters Grace Shipley, Jeanette Robertson, Marietta Clark, and Amelia Sue Green, his brother-in-law Richard Gist, and his grandson John Eric Bartels.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 2, 2012, at 10:00 am at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel with Deacon Charles Barnhart officiating. Interment was at the Providence Cemetery, Gamber.

Donations in the honor of the memory of Brothers may be made to the Gamber and Community Fire Department, 3939 Niner Rd., Finksburg, MD 21048.

Firefighters battle fire and ice in two-alarm Westminster blaze

Units across county help in fighting house fire

Area firefighters had their hands full Saturday afternoon as they battled the winter weather and lack of water at a two-alarm blaze north of Westminster.

The fire was called in to the Carroll County emergency operations center at 1:30 p.m. When units from the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 arrived at 1:42 p.m., the two-story 3,500-square-foot house in the 1000 block of Phyllis’s Reward Drive, just north of Westminster, showed heavy black smoke, according to Bob Cumberland, Westminster Fire Department president and public information officer.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, incident commander Lt. Josh Evans requested a tanker task force and Rapid Intervention Dispatch to battle.

A second alarm was sounded. The rural location of the home, outside of available hydrants, presented firefighters with constant water supply issues.

The freezing cold, light snow on the ground, along with the water being used on the fire freezing on the ground, made matters worse.

The Carroll County roads crews assisted by salting the ground to help with the ice. Nearby neighbors, Dale and Teresa Fletcher, opened their home – and their garage -- for firefighters to set up a relief station for the 80 to 100 firefighters from three counties to periodically take refuge in shifts.

More than 40 pieces from every fire station in Carroll, except Harney, fought the blaze.
