Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No.1: Take this Time to Educate Yourself about the Dangers of Heat Exposure

The sun bears down on the Ag Center near Westminster and Carroll County today as temperatures expected to reach the mid 90's.  File photo by Kevin Dayhoff.

Today, “temperatures expected to reach the mid 90's,” and “The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in effect from noon to 8 p.m.”

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in effect for Carroll County today from noon to 8 p.m. in addition to an Air Quality Alert.

As we begin to experience excessive periods of heat the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1, along with other health care partners, would like to remind the public of the dangers of prolonged heat exposure...

Some tips concerning heat exposure include...

People and animals should stay indoors.

If you don’t have air-conditioning, go to the malls or stores, cooling locations, or public buildings.

Drink more fluids, but avoid alcohol and high sugar drinks

When going out, wear light clothing and never leave any persons, especially infants or young children, or animals in a closed, parked vehicle

Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others.  Check regularly on: Infants and young children; People aged 65 or older; People who have a mental illness; Those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure.

Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.  Infants and young children, of course, need much more frequent watching.

For more information see “Heat and Air Quality Alerts in Effect for Carroll County,” call 800-CDC-INFO, or visit their web site.  More information is also available at the Maryland Department of Health.

Se safe out there.

September 7, 2006 celebration of the 35th anniversary of Junction

I’ve been a member of the board of Junction since October 2000.  This is a group photo of the staff and board on September 7, 2006, when we celebrated our 35th anniversary.

Junction is a local Westminster Carroll County Maryland private nonprofit agency for substance abuse prevention and outpatient drug treatment.  It provides prevention, intervention, and treatment of substance abuse for individuals, their families, and the community through education, counseling, community collaboration, and leadership in Carroll County.

It was incorporated on September 27, 1971.  A month after incorporation, on December 6, 1971, it opened its doors in the historic Carroll County Jail on Court Street in Westminster.

I remember being in there then at age 15 scraping and painting walls. Little did I know that I would be working there someday for nearly 25 years. Here is a picture from 1971 of many of the youth who helped make this project work.”

What's your portion I.Q.? Tips to control how much you eat

What's your portion I.Q.? Tips to control how much you eat

September 22, 2010|By Kitty Broihier, Environmental Nutrition Newsletter

Fighting that thickening of the middle that seems to come with age requires one thing above all else — firm control of how much we eat.

A number of studies indicate that portion size is more closely correlated with the number of calories you take in than is the quality or type of food you eat. And the reverse also seems to be true — portion control yields more weight loss than changing the foods you eat or exercising more (though doing those plus paying attention to portions is best of all).

Keeping portions reasonable is not always easy, but it's certainly doable whether you eat out or eat in. Order an appetizer as an entree plus a salad or soup. At home, choose single-serve packages, but only if you can stick to just one. And remember, it's an expensive option and environmentally unfriendly because of all that extra packaging.

Here's a quick pop quiz to determine your portion control prowess. Read more: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2010-09-22/health/ct-food-0917-portions-20100922_1_nutrition-facts-label-portion-control-calories-and-nutrients+++++++++++++++

CC Health Dept cancels Nov 7 H1N1 clinics

Click here for a larger image: http://twitpic.com/oael4

The Carroll County Health Department announced that due to insufficient quantities of Flu Vaccine, they are cancelling the H1N1 Flu Clinics scheduled for November 7th. Please refer to the attached schedule for the revised clinic schedule.

Changes to these dates and times will be posted on the Carroll County Health Department's website at www.carrollhealthdepartment.dhmh.md.gov and the Flu Hotline 410-876-3003

I have two versions of the essentially the same update. I'll just paste both of them into this post. It looks like before anyone ventures out to any of the scheduled clinics, you need to check with: the Carroll County Health Department's website at www.carrollhealthdepartment.dhmh.md.gov and the Flu Hotline 410-876-3003

~~~~~
CARROLL COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
H1N1 (SWINE) FLU UPDATE
4 NOVEMBER 2009
NOTE: The perspective of the coming Updates will be somewhat changed. As increasing amounts of H1N1 vaccine comes into the County, the Updates will focus more on CCHD’s mass vaccination centers (MVC) specifically and vaccination issues in general.
The MVCs scheduled for Saturday November 7, 2009 at Northwest Middle School in Taneytown and Winters Mill High School in Westminster HAVE BEEN CANCELED due to lack of vaccine.
The next scheduled MVC will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the Carroll County Agricultural Center – Shipley Arena, 706 Agricultural Center, Westminster. Hours are 11:00 am to 7:00 pm or until vaccine is exhausted. This MVC is still only for the Centers for Disease Control’s initial priority groups, which are:
  • Pregnant women
  • Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age
  • Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel
  • Children and young adults aged 6 months to 24 years
  • Persons aged 25 through 64 with chronic medical conditions which place them at greater risk of medical complication from influenza
When CCHD staff arrive at a MVC, they will hand out numbered index cards equal to the number of doses on hand to the people in line. This should avoid individuals from waiting an inordinate amount of time only to be turned away at the door.
DATES OF FUTURE H1N1 MASS VACCINATION CENTERS
(subject to vaccine availability)
Saturday, November 14 at Parr’s Ridge Elementary School
Saturday, November 14 at North Carroll Middle School
Wednesday, November 18 at the Manchester Activities Building
(clinic times to be announced)
Please consult the CCHD website
www.carrollhealthdepartment.dhmh.md.gov
for up to date information.
~~~~~
REVISED 11/4/09

H1N1 (SWINE FLU) MASS VACCINATION CLINIC (MVC) SCHEDULE

FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS IN THE PRIORITY GROUP*

*SUBJECT TO VACCINE AVAILABILITY*

Changes to these dates and times will be posted on the

Carroll County Health Department’s website at

http://www.carrollhealthdepartment.dhmh.md.gov/ and the Flu Hotline 410-876-3003

Before going to the MVC, check the website and/or call the Flu Hotline

as the clinic schedule is subject to change

These clinics are for the PRIORITY GROUPS recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Currently, there is a limited supply of vaccine and the CDC recommends that the priority groups receive the vaccine FIRST. These individuals are found to be at greatest risk for complications from H1N1:

Pregnant women

Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age

Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel

Children and young adults aged 6 months to 24 years

Persons aged 25 through 64 with health conditions that place them at greater risk of medical complications from influenza

Again, the above priority groups will receive the vaccine FIRST. After these priority groups have been vaccinated, the Carroll County Health Department will schedule H1N1 vaccination clinics in the county so that ALL residents can receive the vaccine if they so wish. The Carroll County Health Department is following the recommendations set forth by the Centers for Disease Control.

Pickle Peril

Pickle Peril

Few people realize the peril of the deadly pickle. Consider:

99.9% of all folks who die of a heart attack have eaten pickles;
-
99.7% of all those involved in air, auto, boat and bike accidents ate pickles in the preceding 21 days;
-
nearly all sick people have eaten pickles;
-
among all people born in 1870, who later ate pickles, there has been nearly 100% mortality.
-
We simply must do something about this deadly scourge. Write your congress member today. Please tell him or her that enough is enough! Outlaw pickles today! Or at least place a seven-day waiting period on the purchase and possession of a pickle for domestic consumption. It is the least that we can do! Pickle peril must stop now! It must stop with us! It is our civic, human, ethical and moral responsibility.

Wait Times to see doctor may make you sick by Dan Thanh

Hat Tip: Bryan Sears

Thursday, June 4, 2009

Although the wait time for most of the physicians that I see is minimal, I could still really relate with Dan Thanh’s post:

I have to make an appointment to see a doctor soon. It's been about a year since my last visit, maybe longer, and I've been putting it off because A. I hate going to the doctor because I'm convinced they'll find something wrong with me, and B. I hate having to wait to see the doctor.

[…]

Apparently, things are only going to get worse. According to this
USA Today story, you could wait more than a month to see a specialist or a family doctor now. On average, "wait times have increased by 8.6 days per city. Boston had the longest wait, averaging 49.6 days, followed by Philadelphia with 27 and Los Angeles with 24.2. The shortest was Atlanta with an 11.2-day wait," according to a study by Merrit Hawkins and Associates, a consulting firm based in Texas.

In all cities among all the specialties,
the study found that the average wait time was 20.5 days. Holy Moly. I better put in for an appointment now since I might be waiting another year before I see a doctor.

[…]

… just wait and see how much more maddening it will get if the
Obama Administration manages to pass some sort of government-funded universal healthcare system.

Perhaps it is time to rethink the War on Drugs

Perhaps it is time to rethink the War on Drugs

March 28, 2009

I have slowly but surely evolved in my thinking to the point that I agree that it is time to re-assess our country’s “War on Drugs.”

Above and beyond the fact that is not appropriate to wage war on your own citizens; it is becoming obvious that this is not a problem that can be solved with law enforcement alone.

It has been an extraordinarily expensive war – and it is not working.

At this point, I’m not sure that I go along with legalizing it; perhaps it is time to emphasis treating it as a medical problem.

Mission of Mercy raises awareness of health needs

Mission of Mercy raises awareness of health needs

Published in
http://explorecarroll.com/news/2461/news-briefs/ on 03/04/2009

Mission of Mercy, a nonprofit that provides free health care to Carroll County residents who could not otherwise afford it, is holding a series of open houses to give the public an inside look at its operations and — hopefully in the minds of administrators — inspire more individuals to donate or volunteer.

The free, one-hour tours, dubbed Coffee with MOM, include a continental breakfast. They will be held at the Barrell House, 10 Distillery Drive, Westminster, where Mission of Mercy's mobile clinic treats medical and dental patients on its periodic stops in Westminster.

The dates are March 4 and 18, April 15 and 29 and May 6 and 27.

Mission of Mercy's client load has spiked as the economy has worsened.

The organization needs doctors and dentists who can volunteer a day or two a month, and also nurses to staff clinics. The operation also needs monetary donations.

MOM officials said clients include not just the unemployed, but also those who are employed but are still either uninsured or under-insured, insofar as they cannot afford their co-payments or need treatment not covered by insurance.

Those interested in attending a Coffee with MOM open house should call 410-857-4811.
