Henryton State Hospital | Tumblr

"Henryton State Hospital, 2007.

The Henryton State Hospital complex, sprawling across the forested edge of Patapsco State Park in rural Maryland, was built in stages from 1922 to 1946, commissioned as a segregated tuberculosis sanatorium for the state’s African-American population.

Maryland’s Black community in the 1920s and 1930s suffered from tuberculosis at four times the rate of whites, who typically had less crowded living conditions and better nutrition, and therefore less exposure and better immune health at home for fending off an infection for which there were not yet any antibiotics to treat.

By the time the last buildings were finally completed for the originally crowded sanatorium, the epidemic had already calmed down, and the underpopulated complex was transformed into a long-term inpatient mental health facility. It was finally closed entirely in 1985.

Over the years Henryton has been ravaged by vandalism and suspicious fires more than by time and nature. The main building was bulldozed a few weeks ago, following several other arson-ravaged state-owned abandonments demolished in recent years over safety concerns. It is worth noting, given Henryton’s original purpose in providing patients fresh air to help them recover from respiratory illness, that the demolition process necessarily involves substantial asbestos abatement."

Drugs steal your life away – by Jim Lee April 12, 2015 Carroll County Times

[…]

People in Carroll and across the state are talking about ways to tackle the problem of heroin and opioid abuse and the growing number of deaths attributed to drug overdoses. The best way is through constant educational efforts that start when kids are young and that are reinforced constantly throughout their school years.

Carroll Hospital Center looking for partners - baltimoresun.com

Carroll Hospital Center looking for partners - baltimoresun.com

Wants to better position itself as health care reimbursement changes

"By Andrea K. Walker, The Baltimore Sun February 17, 2014

http://www.baltimoresun.com/health/maryland-health/bs-hs-carroll-hospital-partner-20140217,0,2952578.story

Carroll Hospital Center has begun what it calls an "aggressive" search for hospital partners, saying it's open to all options, including the possibility of merging with another institution.

The 193-bed hospital has operated independently for its entire 53-year existence and is profitable, but CEO John Sernulka said changes in health care will put financial pressure on small hospitals like his in the near future.

"Reimbursement will continue to tighten," Sernulka said. "There will be less and less dollars pumped into the health care system.""

I donated blood today at the blood drive at Grace Lutheran Church

Overnight, Carroll County had a relatively rare late March snow...

By mid-afternoon on Monday the streets in Westminster had had been cleared for hours and traffic seemed to be moving easily.

Earlier in the day I had interviewed the Westminster Street Superintendent Larry Bloom and Westminster Police Chief Jeff Spaulding and both had said that there were little, if no traffic problems in Westminster as a result of the snow… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/community/bal-early-spring-snow-carroll-20130325,0,2188928.story

So after lunch I went over to Grace Lutheran Church and donated blood at our church’s regularly scheduled blood drives.

Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters..... S. T. R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ......she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today.

Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and
Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify... Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three
simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today.)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.
