Phil Grout award-winning photojournalist to appear at Birdie’s Cafe Gallery in Westminster

Phil Grout award-winning photojournalist to appear at Birdie’s Cafe Gallery in Westminster

November 1, 2010

Birdie’s Cafe Gallery in Westminster is proud to announce a major retrospective exhibit and sale of photographic works by Phil Grout from his 44 years as a photojournalist—40 from Carroll County, MD.

Phil Grout is an award-winning photojournalist, fine art photographer, and author.

Since 1966 he has worked throughout North, South and Central America, Asia and Africa gathering images for newspapers, magazines, wire services and book publishers.

His work has been awarded by the Associated Press as well as other news and arts organizations.

According to his website, www.philgrout.com, Grout started to learn his craft as a photojournalist in 1966 covering naval operations in Vietnam

“But he quickly discovered it wasn’t the images of war he was hunting, but more the face of humanity as he roamed the back alleys of Saigon, Hong Kong, Japan, and the Philippines.  With pictures and words he became a gatherer of the threads which bind us together as human beings…

“He is the author of three critically acclaimed photo essay books.  His work has been awarded by the Associated Press as well as various arts organizations.  It has also been featured in art galleries throughout the United States.”

Grout is “Good picture shooter, and a colleague in journalism starting in the navy and then at the Hanover Evening Sun and others. I have three or four walls covered with his work in my home….  Recommend you stop by and see his stuff,” said Carroll County Commissioner and fellow Vietnam Veteran, Dean Minnich

Sherri Hosfeld Joseph, the owner of Birdie’s and an artist herself, added, “Phil Grout is one of the greatest photojournalists of his generation.  We are truly blessed as a community that he has chosen our stories to document.  Phil has an amazing ability to find the extraordinary in everyday life - and this show, a retrospective of forty-four years of his work, will leave you awestruck.”

An opening reception for the artist will be held at Birdie’s Cafe, 233 E. Main St., Westminster, MD Friday, November 5, 2010, from 6-10 p.m.  The exhibition will remain through Friday, December 31, 2010.

An extensive collection of Phil's work can be viewed at www.philgrout.com

Colonial East Main Street Westminster is reflected in the window of the front door at the new coffee shop, Birdie’s Café, which just opened at 233 East Main Street.

To the delight of many a Main Street Westminster caffeine addict, Sherri Hosfeld Joseph opened a coffee shop - Birdie’s Café http://www.birdiescoffee.com/ on July 13, 2010.

Joseph, a professional artist, designer, and photographer, was able to utilize much of the fixtures and equipment left behind almost two-years ago, however, she has worked since last January meticulously cleaning, painting, and planning and researching every detail for the shop with co-workers Danes Menges and Emily White

… local artists Susan Williamson and Becki Maurio seated at the table…

Customers Alex Stamm and Jenna Winegar, North Carroll High School graduates from Hampstead, were more than happy to take a break from their computer and answer a few questions.

Sherri Hosfeld Joseph sat with a sigh and a big smile.

“Hi. How are ya? How’s the coffee?”

To the delight of many a Westminster caffeine addict, Hosfeld recently opened a coffee shop — Birdie’s Café — in an historic brick building at 233 E. Main St.

After a run of about seven years, the former coffee shop there, The Pour House, abruptly ceased operations in November 2008.

Its absence was the source of caffeine-deprived headaches and a blow to Westminster’s downtown district, which includes the newly renovated Cockey’s addition to the Historical Society of Carroll County and the Carroll Arts Center on the western end of town...

On April 3, the Carroll Hospital Center Foundation Founders Dinner honored the newest recipient of its Founders Circle Community Spirit Award, G. Melvin Mills Jr. Mills joins previous honorees Atlee Wampler, David and Betty Scott, Charles Fisher Sr., Scott and Anita Bair, Jack Gambatese, Jack Tevis and Steve Bohn.

Throughout our history there are many examples of basic needs of our community that have been addressed by the private sector.

Look no further than our local hospital. Talk of the need for a hospital in our community goes as far back as the 1880s, and its history is filled with stories of private individuals who worked hard to ensure that it was built.

Many folks in the community may take the hospital for granted, but its success has been greatly supported by the community.

At this year's Founders ceremony, held at St. John's Portico in Westminster, the event's 240 guests also were acknowledged for their generosity and ongoing financial support of the hospital, Carroll Hospice and the hospital auxiliary.
Jack Tevis, chair of the hospital foundation board; John Sernulka, hospital CEO; Charlie Fisher Jr., chair of board of directors; and the 2007 Spirit Award recipient, Steve Bohn, all shared in presenting Mills with the 2009 award for his contributions of time, talent and resources to the hospital since the mid-1980s.

Mills served on the foundation board of trustees from 1995 to 2005. From 2001 to 2005 he chaired the board while also serving on the hospital's board of directors. And during his 10 years of service, more than $15 million was raised on behalf of the hospital and Carroll Hospice.

Also recognized for her contributions was Mills' wife Linda -- as we all know, no one can do great things for the community without the support of family.

[…]

Finally, I should note that Sherri Hosfeld Joseph, the hospital foundation's director of development, helped me with information for this week's column. If you'd like to learn more about the work of the foundation, give her a call at 410- 871-6200.
