MD St. Fire Marshal: Two alarm fire destroys historic http://twitpic.com/dnmdno 160 year old Carroll County Church http://tinyurl.com/n5tt7da

According to a Maryland State Fire marshal news release on December 3rd, 2013:

TWO ALARM FIRE DESTROYS LOCAL CHURCH

CARROLL COUNTY, MD (December 3, 2013) – Investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are currently conducting an origin and cause investigation involving the Lazarus Church located at 5101 South Church Street in Lineboro.

The 4:11 a.m. two alarm blaze was discovered by neighbors directly across the street of the 160 year-old church. Nearly 60 firefighters responded from Carroll and Baltimore Counties, as well as York County, Pennsylvania to control the blaze within two hours after arrival on scene.

The church, originally constructed in 1853, received heavy fire damage throughout the entire structure. Damage estimates for the structure and contents is one million dollars.

The Lazarus Church is a union congregation church and was a place of worship for both UCC and Lutheran members.

The origin and cause for the blaze remains under investigation at this time. Anyone having information concerning this fire should contact the Metro Regional Office of the State Fire Marshal at 410-871-3050.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is an agency of the Department of State Police dedicated to helping protect citizens from fire and explosion through a comprehensive program of education, inspection, investigation and fire protection engineering. Lazarus Church has established an easy and secure way for our community to donate.

Please be sure that all monies raised through this program will be securely processed and will directly support the rebuilding efforts of both congregations.

You may write a check and send it to the church's address: "Lazarus UCC" fund, Lazarus Church, 5101 S. Church St., Lineboro, MD 21102. Thank you for your generosity and your love - it is greatly and truly appreciated.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.    (Psalm 46:1-3)

Community support 4 churches after disasters #CarrollCounty tradition #LazarusChurch http://tinyurl.com/n5tt7da

By Kevin E. Dayhoff, 5:12 p.m. EST, December 4, 2013

On the Mason-Dixon Line in northern Carroll County, the historic town of Lineboro was awakened at 4:11 a.m. on Tuesday when the first alarm rang out that there was a fire in the 160-year-old Lazarus United Church of Christ and Lutheran Union Church. Two alarms and two hours later, the fire was declared under control.

In spite of the efforts of approximately 60 firefighters from Carroll and Baltimore counties and York County, Pa., the historic structure was a total loss.

According to research by historians Joe Getty and Mary Ann Ashcraft for the Historical Society of Carroll County, "Carroll County was strongly influenced by German Baptists, also known as Dunkards and later as Church of the Brethren, and by two denominations which worked closely together during those early years — Lutheran and Reformed (now known as United Church of Christ.)

[…]

Carroll has a history of natural disasters — snowstorms, floods, tornadoes, fires — that threaten our safety, health and welfare. Too often, these natural disasters find a church.

On June 19, 1952, a storm destroyed the St. John's Roman Catholic Church steeple on Main Street in Westminster.

On Feb. 19, 1893, a tornado destroyed the steeple at St. Paul's United Church of Christ at the corner of Green Street and Bond.

On April 9 and 10, 1883, an entire section of Westminster, from John Street to Carroll Street to Main Street, burned to the ground. All that was left of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street was a brick shell.

[…]

An article in the Baltimore Sun last Tuesday by Blair Ames and Carrie Wells reported, “The congregation itself dates to 1853, and was founded by members of Zion's Church in Manchester… poor roads had made the five-mile route from Lineboro to Manchester impassable for several months each year, so the faithful decided to build their own church.

“According to a 1939 Sun article, the original sanctuary was built through donation pledges from members — the largest recorded was $120 and the smallest ‘121/2 cents.’”

Benjamin’s Krider’s United Church of Christ and Cemetery

Krider’s Church Road in Westminster, MD

Established 1761

I looked for a web site for the church and I was not able to find one. I did however find a list of the folks buried in the cemetery as of October 25th, 1889 here: Krider's Cemetery, Carroll Co., MD List of interments” or http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/md/carroll/cemeteries/krider.txt

“Krider's (St Benjamin's) Lutheran & Reformed Cemetery is located on

Krider's Church Road near Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland. This

list of interments taken October 25, 1889, was found in The Democratic

Advocate, a local newspaper, and was published the first of February 1890.”

I also found a list of cemeteries in Carroll County that appear to have had an inventory completed of the names of the folks interred:

Repeated violations shake Cedarhurst Universalists

BY Diane Reynolds, Times Staff Writer Saturday, November 18, 2006

"The best way to fight this is to have the community condemn it," (Rev. Henry Simoni-Wastila) said.

(Rev. Henry Simoni-Wastila) quoted Booker T. Washington: "I will let no man take me down so low as to let me hate him."

FINKSBURG - The meditation garden, built by the church's youth group, is quiet now, layers of fallen yellow leaves muffling sound.

A brightly painted peace pole in the garden, made by the congregation's children, shines in the morning light.

But the memories of the peace pole's desecration, swastikas scrawled on tables at the sanctuary's entrance and BB gun shots through the church's windows have sent a chill of fear through the congregation.

A spider web pattern of cracks caused by a BB remains in the one window that has not been repaired.

For a period of several weeks from late August into September, the Cedarhurst Unitarian Universalist Association's church in Finksburg was repeatedly vandalized.

[…]

"The best way to fight this is to have the community condemn it," he said.

Simoni-Wastila came to two Westminster Ministerium meetings to gain support, said Tim Thomas, president of the Westminster Ministerium, a consortium of local churches.

"Everyone was of one accord in wanting to condemn any kind of violence and vandalism," Thomas said.

The ministerium also wanted to affirm Simoni-Wastila personally, Thomas said, and give him encouragement.

The Rev. Dan Knight, pastor of First Church of God of Westminster, agreed.

"My heart goes out to Henry as one member of the clergy to another," he said.
