In the 1988 guide, the Carroll County Chamber reported:

Eating at an ethnic restaurant is certainly nothing new in Carroll County. Ever since William Winchester founded Westminster in 1764 on one of the three main roads in Maryland for travelers headed west, there has always been a strong restaurant tradition in town.

Last Friday night, November 15, 2013, after John and Debby Sosnowsky’s opening at Off Track Art, John, Debby and Corrie Sosnowsky, Bobby Waddell, Linda Van Hart, Caroline Babylon and I went over to the Tim Thai Classic restaurant in Westminster at 17 East Main Street for some food and fellowship.

There has been a restaurant at 17 East Main Street as long as most folks can remember. It is believed that the “Central Restaurant” was located there as far back as the 1950s. Much more research will be needed to determine when the Central Restaurant opened and closed. Phone books from the very early 1950s show a “Central Restaurant” located in Hampstead at 20 South Main Street, but not in Westminster.

The 1952 Westminster phone directory shows Acme Market at 1 East Main Street; Treat Shop – owned by the Burk Family – at 5 East Main; the Carroll Pastry Shop at 7 East Main; “The American Restaurant” at 9 East Main; The Coffman-Fisher Co. Dept. Store at 11 East Main; Hollander’s Home & Auto Supplies at 13 East Main; Read’s Drug and Chemical C0 at 15 East Main; and 17 is listed for “Dryden, Clarence C, Helen F Myrtle… Kipe Doris, Larry E Martin.” Are we understand that it was a residence in 1952?

The 1954 phone directory does not show a listing for a restaurant. (It does give my address as 40 Ward Avenue in Westminster.)

In recent years, 17 East Main Street has been a Thai restaurant for many-many years. However, we were not aware that it recently changed hands.

Although the new owners of the Thai restaurant at 17 East Main Street have repainted some of the walls and are in the process of changing a few things around; the food and the service were still wonderful.

I had the vegetable fried rice, spring rolls, and shitake soup; plus a little of this and a little of that off of my friends’ plates. Caroline had the eggplant tofu. It was all delicious. And the service was friendly, conversational, personable and personal.

The website, http://www.thaiclassiconline.com/ notes, “We have recently changed ownership and management. As such our menu (now posted) will be changing.

“Our offerings are individually cooked in the traditional way. Thai and other Asian foods that have been "tweaked" for American tastes. “Come in and try our Tom Kha (coconut soup) and taste the balance of sweetness and tartness…”

In addition to an article in the Baltimore Sun on February 11, 2013, I have written quite a number of articles on restaurants, inns, hotels and saloons in Westminster…

The English author, essayist and biographer, Samuel Johnson once said: “There are two types of knowledge. One is knowing a thing. The other is knowing where to find it.”

Well, where to find it is at the Taneytown business breakfast. If you have ever attended, you know you may arrive to find a few strangers in the room, but you never leave without making new friends, connections and learning some new way to charge ahead into the day and make a difference in our community.

Audrey Cimino of the Community Foundation of Carroll County could not agree more. “Oh my, - without a doubt, this is the best business breakfast in the area,” said Cimino as she juggled her breakfast in one hand, handed-out literature in the other hand and fielded questions from folks right and left including Kevin McLeod, the Program Director at Silver Oak Academy, and Steve Wantz, the past president of the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association.

In October 1833 a referendum was held, in what we now know as the area encompassing Baltimore, Carroll and Frederick counties, on whether a new county was to be created. The vote failed, 593 to 554, although it was later speculated that it failed because of voter irregularities in Baltimore County.

Manchester, which had been against the idea of forming a separate (Carroll) county, “exultantly fired [a cannon] in the direction of defeated Westminster” after the vote was taken.

Subsequently a bill was introduced in 1835 and passed the General Assembly on March 25, 1836 to form Carroll County. This act was confirmed on January 19, 1837. It took only a war of words that lasted about 50 years, but Carroll Countians had finally become an independent county.

This portion of Carroll County history came to mind earlier in the month as I pondered the events of Feb. 23 through March 6, 1836 while I studied a small clay, mud and straw building in a far-off land, now known as Texas.

Many will recognize the dates as when the Battle of the Alamo took place in San Antonio Texas. I took a few days in early September to tour the Alamo and San Antonio and study how its history compared with events in Carroll County in the same time frame.

With the exception of Manchester getting a bit feisty in 1833 and about three military campaigns during the American Civil War, Carroll County history is remarkably free of bloodshed and violence.

Although a small group of missionaries visited the San Antonio area as early as the 1675-1691 time period, it was not until 1718 that a mission outpost was built on the site of the Alamo. The Lutheran church in Maryland can possibly trace its roots as far back as 1747 when small numbers of Lutherans and German Reformers began meeting in private homes primarily in northern Carroll and Frederick Counties.

“The first church building in Carroll County was erected by the Lutheran and Reformed congregations of Manchester in 1760…,” according to a history, “Carroll County Maryland," written by Nancy Warner.

In Westminster, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church is celebrating its 146th anniversary this month. Giulianova Groceria, http://www.brothersun.biz/history.html: Opened in 1986 by Tony D'Eugenio, Giulianova has been a cornerstone of downtown Westminster's Main Street community for two decades, serving the town's Italian grocery needs.

Bill Schroeder bought the store from Tony in the summer of 2003. While the line of ethnic foods has greatly expanded, Bill has never deviated from the principle of selecting the finest quality Italian goods for Giulianova's customers.

The hoagies are the same as the day the doors opened in 1986, that is to say, they are still the best in town. The lasagnas, sauces, and other products produced in the store are derived from the tradition passed down by Mama D'Eugenio.

After handing them down to her son Tony, she was more than happy to share them with Bill. Don't bother driving to Philadelphia, New York, or even Baltimore. Giulianova has been, and will be your source for the finest Italian goods, right in your backyard!
