Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer just posted a “lean-in” story on the new site launched by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg in conjunction with her recent book, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.”

Sandberg and her team have been encouraging women to post their personal stories of when they leaned into their careers and Mayer certainly does that in her post, including discussing taking the job at the top of the troubled Silicon Valley Internet company when she was seven months pregnant….

In a recent ‘lean in’ story posted on the new website launched by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Google employee number 20, Marissa Mayer weighed on how she decided to accept the position of president and CEO of Yahoo!

No meaningful conversation about the constantly changing dynamics of technology is possible without fully exploring the rising influence of women in leadership positions.

The discussion over the role of women in leadership positions has only increased since the July 2012 essay by Princeton professor Anne-Marie Slaughter, "Why Women Still Can't Have It All," was published in The Atlantic and Ms. Sandberg’s recently released book, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.”

Last Monday, Greg Street, a 1991 McDaniel College graduate and the lead systems designer of World of Warcraft, shared his reality of how he journeyed from Texas to Westminster, and then South Carolina to California and Northrend, the crescent-shaped continent in northern Azeroth, in the virtual reality world of gamers.

For Dr. Street, it has been a long, strange, and wonderful trip from Westminster to the Mists of Pandaria.

The audience that gathered at Decker Center Forum on the Westminster college campus was an eclectic combination and – yes, one-third of the audience were hard-core gamers – who know Dr. Street by his screen name “Ghostcrawler” on gamer message boards, where he is a constant presence in search of feedback on the World of Warcraft.

From the Miami Herald: Miami-Dade Public Schools will open its first video-game-themed magnet program this fall, with the goal of teaching students how to design and program video games, the Miami Herald reported on Monday.

The iTech Academy at Miami Springs Senior High School has 125 spots for the freshman class.

“We’re going to be a school that produces not only games, but apps. It’s part of my vision,” Principal Anna Rodriguez was quoted as saying. “I can see our students building holograms. I can really see it.”

According to the newspaper, the focus on design and coding reflects state and national efforts to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Proponents of video-game programs say they prepare students for jobs in the 21st century.

The FBI today warns computer users to exercise caution when they receive e-mails that purport to show photos or videos of Usama bin Laden's recent death. This content could be a virus that could damage your computer. This malicious software, or "malware," can embed itself in computers and spread to users' contact lists, thereby infecting the systems of associates, friends, and family members. These viruses are often programmed to steal your personally identifiable information.
The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) urges computer users to not open unsolicited (spam) e-mails, including clicking links contained within those messages. Even if the sender is familiar, the public should exercise due diligence. Computer owners must ensure they have up-to-date firewall and anti-virus software running on their machines to detect and deflect malicious software.
The IC3 recommends the public do the following:

• Adjust the privacy settings on social networking sites you frequent to make it more difficult for people you know and do not know to post content to your page. Even a "friend" can unknowingly pass on multimedia that?s actually malicious software.
• Do not agree to download software to view videos. These applications can infect your computer.
• Read e-mails you receive carefully. Fraudulent messages often feature misspellings, poor grammar, and nonstandard English.
• Report e-mails you receive that purport to be from the FBI. Criminals often use the FBI?s name and seal to add legitimacy to their fraudulent schemes. In fact, the FBI does not send unsolicited e-mails to the public. Should you receive unsolicited messages that feature the FBI?s name, seal, or that reference a division or unit within the FBI or an individual employee, report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.

WESTMINSTER E-CYCLING PROGRAM CONTINUES
City residents can drop off old electronics for recycling

Westminster, MD – In June, the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) awarded grants to municipalities for the institution or initiation of local recycling programs for computer and video display devices under the Statewide Electronics Recycling Program.

The City of Westminster applied for and received a $25,000 grant from MDE to start an electronics recycling program in Westminster.

As a result, Westminster established a mobile electronics waste recycling center known as the Westminster Initiative to Recycle E-waste Drop-off Center (W.I.R.E.D. Center).

The W.I.R.E.D. center is used as a mobile electronics waste recycling center for residents to drop off electronics waste, which will allow the City to separate the collection of computers, video display devices, and other forms of electronic waste from the regular bulk trash thereby reducing the amount of trash entering the landfill.

The W.I.R.E.D. center will allow the City to properly recycle or dispose of electronic waste by encouraging residents to participate easily and conveniently.

The next drop-off date is November 7, 2009 and the location is 105 Railroad Avenue.

The following items will be accepted: televisions (NO WOOD), microwaves, projection equipment, computers, fax machines, stereos, copiers, monitors, wire & cable, DVD players, electronic toys, peripherals, VCRs, camcorders, telephones, electronic typewriters, CD players, cell phones, calculators, PDAs, scanners, and printers.

I’m not sure I have the nerve to try Window 7 anytime soon. Fortunately I did not make the mistake many of my friends made by “down – err - upgrading” to Vista. I’m aware of a number of horror stories involving downtime and challenges in which Microsoft wanted writers to really be full-time Microsoft software technicians…

Then again, there is the persistent problem of Microsoft’s lack of any sort of meaningful customer service support – or at least that was my experience a number of years ago.

I laughed at this picture when I received it a number of years ago. Candidly, I would not care if customer support was located on the planet Mars, as long as it was helpful – and all too often it was not.

These days when I buy a product or engage a service, one of the determining factors in my decision to buy is how the question, “What is customer service like?” is answered.

Often when customer service is located overseas it is not really customer service but a Potemkin approach so that the company which sold the product can say that it provides customer service. All-too-often, the customer service employees located overseas are not provided with the “tools” or the training to provide real customer service.

I wonder if I am the only person in the world to have noticed that Bill Gates, the world’s richest man, made his fortune with a boorish and predacious company that sold a product that did not/does not work well – or performed poorly, was overpriced and had little, if no customer support? I’m just asking.

Farewell e-mails become an art form in this age of pink slips. Some are funny, some are sad -- and some are just plain furious.

It was not the most eloquent subject line for a farewell e-mail to 5,000 co-workers: "So long, suckers! I'm out!"

But Jason Shugars worked at Google, whose off-center corporate culture is more forgiving than that of your average buttoned-down investment bank. In the rest of his goodbye, Shugars, a senior sales compliance specialist, reminisced about workplace moments that included putting cake down his pants at a sales conference, stealing a boss' $8,000 leather couch and singing "Hit Me Baby One More Time" in a miniskirt and braids.

That's a good question these days, now that thousands of people are finding themselves with pink slips and the need to let colleagues and contacts know they are moving on and -- perhaps more important for job seekers -- how they can be reached.

The farewell e-mail has suddenly become commonplace, a new art form in the electronic age. Yet like so many aspects of the Internet era -- how to unfriend on Facebook, how much to reveal on a personal blog -- the technology has gotten ahead of the etiquette. There are, quite simply, no rules.

In May, lawyer Shinyung Oh was let go from the San Francisco branch of the Paul Hastings law firm six days after losing a baby. The seven-year associate, who said she was told her previous, glowing evaluations may have been "overinflated," composed a blistering e-mail to the partners and fired it off to about 1,000 colleagues around the world.

She accused the firm's partners of "heartlessness" and of blaming her for failing to generate business "that should have been brought in by each of you."

"If this response seems particularly emotional," she wrote to the partners, "perhaps an associate's emotional vulnerability after a recent miscarriage is a factor you should consider the next time you fire or lay someone off. It shows startlingly poor judgment and management skills -- and cowardice -- on your parts."

Within an hour, Oh said, her e-mail was posted on a widely read legal affairs blog, then made its way into the mainstream media.

Will Schwalbe, coauthor of "Send: Why People E-mail So Badly and How to Do it Better," said the farewell e-mail was a reflection of two intersecting trends: the universality of e-mail and the confessional spirit of the times, which have resulted, as he put it, in "the democratization of the process."

In the pre-computer world, Schwalbe said, "Personnel wrote something -- a memo, Xeroxed -- generally, you didn't get to do it. They did it. But what had been an HR function is now a personal function." That, he said, leads to a different sort of message.

Slashdot: Google has unofficially announced the GDrive

According to Slashdot: An anonymous reader writes "Google has unofficially announced the GDrive by source code. In an in-direct way Google has publicly advertised the new much anticipated online storage drive called the GDrive.

If you take a look at the source code of some javascript within the Google Pack, you will clearly see the GDrive referenced. The code categorizes the GDrive as an 'Online file backup and storage' device.

It also provides the following descriptions; 'GDrive provides reliable storage for all of your files, including photos, music and documents' and 'GDrive allows you to access your files from anywhere, anytime, and from any device — be it from your desktop, web browser or cellular phone'"

"Chorus Line" – Review

"Chorus Line" opened Tuesday at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre. That should be quite enough for anyone who knows the slightest thing about theatre; they should rush to buy tickets for the show that ends a week from Sunday, on December 14. It lasted 15 years on Broadway and was brought back for a two-year revival that spawned the national tour visiting Charm City. This is a true stage icon.
