Mitchell K. Alexander, McDaniel College director of Event Services

I learned today from my friend on Facebook, Mahlia Joyce
that my dear friend Mitch Alexander has passed away from a heart attack… I am
so sad and my heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. Mitch was a
wonderful friend for many-many years. He was always good for a big hug, a huge
smile and a kind word.

We regret to inform the McDaniel community that Mitchell K.
Alexander, director of Event Services, passed away today, Feb. 19, following a
heart attack. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in
Education from WMC in 1980 and worked in Student Affairs as a part-time Decker
Center building manager during the evenings and weekends. While an
undergraduate here, he was named to Who’s Who Among American College Students
and the recipient of the Lynn F. Gruber Leadership Award
After teaching middle school science for a year at Saint
Francis Academy in Baltimore, Mitchell returned to the College as assistant
director of College Activities. In 1986, he completed his master’s degree in
School Administration. He left for a promotion in 1988 and served as director
of Student Activities at Post College in Waterbury, Connecticut. He returned 16
months later to WMC as student activities director.
In a 1993 edition of the student newspaper, Mitchell was
described as having, “the whole campus in his hands.” His legacy is one of
empowering student groups to organize and create successful events for the
campus community. More recently, his campus knowledge was invaluable for his
expertise and guidance for event staging and set-ups.
He is survived by his wife Mildred Artis Alexander, class of
1981, and their two children, Blake and Paige.
Information regarding funeral services will be shared when
available.

The Panama Canal officially opened on Aug. 14, 1914, when
the SS Ancon sailed the newly constructed 48-mile waterway from the Caribbean
Sea to the Pacific Ocean. That path linking the two bodies of water on the
Isthmus of Panama is mentioned a number of times in Carroll County history.
Distinguished international journalist Sadie Kneller Miller,
who was born in Westminster, worked for many years for Leslie's Illustrated
Weekly. She covered the early years of the building of the canal around 1908,
according to research by Mary Ann Ashcraft for the Historical Society of
Carroll County.
The opening of the canal gave a much-needed boost to Carroll
County agriculture, as it shaved more than 7,000 miles off the trip by ship
around South America to markets on the west coast of the United States and Asia
for Carroll County corn, wheat, soybeans, canned goods and meat products.
The year the canal opened was a critical one in the history
of Carroll County farming. It marked the end of an era that began in 1896 that

The 193-bed hospital has operated independently for its entire 53-year existence and is profitable, but CEO John Sernulka said changes in health care will put financial pressure on small hospitals like his in the near future.

HEAVIEST SNOW ACCUMULATION OF THE SEASON EXPECTED IN NEXT WINTER STORM
Residents should take precautions now for storm that is expected to start late Wednesday
REISTERSTOWN, MD (February 11, 2014) – Maryland residents should prepare now for what is expected to be the largest snowfall of the season. Forecasters are predicting about 6-10 inches of snow – or more — for most of Maryland depending on the final track of the storm.
In anticipation of the storm, Governor Martin O’Malley has issued a State of Emergency Declaration, which will allow the state to deploy members of the Maryland National Guard, allow emergency contracting by the Department of General Services and waive certain rules and regulations to speed recovery from the storms.
Forecasters predict this will be a heavy, wet snow. Because many trees were weakened by last week’s ice storm, it is possible that some remaining trees may not be able to hold the added weight and could fall, impacting electric service. Residents are advised to prepare for potential power outages and to conserve power as much as possible.
“It’s been a long winter for many Maryland families. With the polar vortex, a bad ice storm and several snow storms already this year, it’s incredibly important for all Marylanders to remain vigilant and find smart ways to safely conserve energy,” said Governor O’Malley. “Once again we ask our residents to be prepared, avoid travel if at all possible, and remember to keep an eye on relatives, friends and neighbors.”
Residents should have a disaster supply kit with water, non-perishable food, a battery- or crank-operated radio and other necessities in case of an extended power outage. Now is also the time to make sure cell phones and other devices are fully charged in case of a power outage.
If you must travel in bad weather, makes sure your car’s battery, tires and wiper blades are in good condition and always have more than half a tank of gas in the car. Add a car charger, blankets and extra snacks and drinks to your car’s supply kit, and if you must drive, make sure someone knows where you are going and your planned route in case you become stranded.
Do not leave pets exposed to cold and snow for long periods. If your pets must remain outside, make sure they have a dry shelter, plenty of food and drinkable (non-frozen) water. Do not put blankets or pillows in their shelter as they may become wet and frozen in a snow storm.

The parent company of 1st Mariner Bank said Monday that it has signed a deal to sell the bank after years of regulatory demands that it increase its capital, potentially ending the company's long struggle to right itself after the mortgage crisis.
A group of investors, many with local ties, have agreed to
buy the Baltimore bank — the largest based in the region — and recapitalize it
with about $100 million.
First Mariner Bancorp, the parent company, said it filed for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday afternoon in Baltimore federal court to
"facilitate the transaction."

order that it's been trying to satisfy, and we've reached the finish
line," said Mark Keidel, interim president of 1st Mariner Bank. "This
agreement … puts the bank on much firmer financial ground — and quite frankly
