Sunday, August 21, 2016. 8:45 am service at St. John Catholic Church, Westminster Md. The new priest, Father Mark is awesome.

Father Mark's message this morning was to discuss the Olympics, the number of metals won by  the nations with the highest metal count - and the accomplishments of the athletes. Can you imagine what it would be like if we gave all the athletes a certificate of participation? As a member of the church, we cannot simply just show up and get a participation trophy. Keep your eyes on the prize, Jesus Christ. When did mediocre become good enough? We have to become the best version of ourselves.

We have to stop the participation trophy complex from running our lives. We run the race to win. We cannot win the race if we get a trophy for just showing up.

Thanks for the Calissons d'Aix amandes du bassin méditerranéen

Fri. Aug. 19, 2016 Thanks for the Calissons d'Aix
Breaking rocks on a bread and water diet

August 17, 2016

Today, the former mayor may be found breaking rocks on a bread and water diet. Wed. Aug. 17, 2016

According to an article, “The Tramp Problem in Cities” in Vol. 4, No. 3 edition of “City Government - Municipal Journal and Public Works,”

The article begins by explaining, “An inquiry from Hon. Peter J. Carolus, judge of the police court of St. Joseph, Mo., to the League of American Municipalities, in regard to the tramp problem, has brought forth he following information and suggestions:

[…]

Mayor Robert J. Saltsman, Erie, Pa. reports “Every city ought to have a work-house or stone pile for tramps or vagrants; we have mothing of the sort, but work our tramps in summer cleaning the streets. If we could get our county commissioners to join us we would build a work-house at once.”

F. G. Pierce, the mayor of Marshalltown, Ia. says, “We consider the tramp a good thing… We give any person who applies to any of the police officers one night’s lodging in the station house, and if the tramp is found in the city the next night he is run and given five days on bread and water.

“In the summer time we work the tramps on a small city park under way to completion. We find, however, that there is only one way to deal with this question, and it is a very good solution to the question, and that is the bread and water diet. Just as long as cities give tramps a good lodging and good meals they will be troubled, and just as soon as they begin to give them bread the bread and water diet they will give that city a wide berth. I assure you.”

Food for the soul and a late summer diet. Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016.

Food for the soul and a late summer diet. Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016.

After eating my way through several weeks on the road, vacation, and Carroll Co. 4H FFA Fair week; I may never be allowed to eat again. So after church I asked Caroline what we were doing for lunch? I was thinking maybe IHOP? C suggested something along the lines of nuts, berries, twigs, and mulch.

After more discussion about the sermon and the service we decided that we might only be allowed to eat the bulletin. Never mind the dioxin content. So this week we are beginning a new tradition of having the church bulletin for lunch after church. We will research the nutritional values at a later date. Spiritually, it is quite fulfilling. And no definitive determination as to the caloric content of the meal.

Here we are going through some trials as what might be the best condiment. For today we made a concession, and are simply eating the bulletin in a salad.

"Inclined to Recline," in the June-July 2016 edition of AARP The Magazine

Fri. July 29, 2016.

I found this brief article, "Inclined to Recline," in the June-July 2016 edition of AARP The Magazine. It was written by Samaria Brown, AARP Travel Expert, in a column, 'My Travel Tips.'

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10208307945709857&id=1040426835

I have written about this before, at great length - many-many years ago. Flying is quite difficult and certainly not showing any signs of getting better. If anything, it is getting worse.

Writing about all the challenges of flying these days is beyond my patience keyboarding with my thumbs on my phone, but first among equals among the unforced - fixable problems flying are the reclining seats.

After countless incidents why do airlines still have reclining seat on planes? Many articles about the problem suggest that you say politely something to the person who has totally reclined into your personal space, but I have learned the hard way not to bother because this rude behavior is often perpetrated by sociopaths. I just zen it.

Piggly Wiggly Address: 118 SOUTH US 64-264, Manteo, NC 27954 Phone: (252) 473-3727 Where It Began…Piggly Wiggly Beginning

Piggly Wiggly®, America's first true self-service grocery store, was founded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1916 by Clarence Saunders. In grocery stores of that time, shoppers presented their orders to clerks who then gathered the goods from the store shelves. Saunders, a dynamic and innovative man, noticed that this method resulted in wasted time and expense, so he came up with an unheard-of solution that would revolutionize the entire grocery industry: he developed a way for shoppers to serve themselves.

Despite predictions that his novel idea would fail, Saunders' first store opened on September 6, 1916 at 79 Jefferson Street in Memphis. Operating under the unusual name 'Piggly Wiggly®', it was unlike any other contemporary grocery store. There were shopping baskets, open shelves, and no clerks to shop for the customer – all of which were previously unheard of!

Piggly Wiggly Corporation, which Saunders established when he opened his first store in Memphis, secured the self-service format and issued franchises to hundreds of grocery retailers to operate their own Piggly Wiggly® stores.

Piggly Wiggly Corporation became the owner of all Piggly Wiggly® properties - the name, the patents, etc., and Saunders began issuing company stock soon after. The stock was successfully traded on the New York Stock Exchange for some time, but through a series of trades in the early 1920s, Saunders lost control of Piggly Wiggly® and had no further association with the company.

Despite Saunders' departure, Piggly Wiggly Corporation continued to prosper as a franchiser for hundreds of independently owned grocery stores operating under the Piggly Wiggly® name.

All in a Name

Saunders' reason for choosing the intriguing name "Piggly Wiggly®" remains a mystery; he was curiously reluctant to explain its origin. One story says that, while riding a train, he looked out his window and saw several little pigs struggling to get under a fence, which prompted him to think of the rhyme. Someone once asked him why he had chosen such an unusual name for his organization, to which he replied, "So people will ask that very question." Regardless of his inspiration, he succeeded in finding a name that would be talked about and remembered. https://www.pigglywiggly.com/about-us
