CCPS discuss possibility of banning Confederate flag items in schools

CCPS discuss possibility of banning Confederate flag items in schools

In a crowded room Wednesday night, one person after another got up asking for one thing: the banning of Confederate flags on shirts, accessories and more in Carroll County Public Schools.

Nearly a dozen spoke on the topic Wednesday, some young students, other parents in the community and some community leaders.

Mel Brennan, of Westminster, spoke as a parent of a Westminster High School freshman. His daughter, Brennan said, deals with seeing students with Confederate flag paraphernalia every day. And as a mixed-race child, he added, she experiences this as hate speech directed at her.

With these items, he said, Westminster High School doesn’t create “a safe or healthy school environment for her.”

“This is of course unacceptable,” Brennan said.

Following the numerous speakers, CCPS Superintendent Stephen Guthrie addressed the issue. The school board came to a consensus to have the CCPS’s legal team look into if CCPS can legally ban the flag on shirts and other items, possibly including those on cars in the school parking lot.

Guthrie said three years ago, he looked into banning the symbol in schools, but at the time was told legally he could not.

Carroll Arts Center celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan. 15, 2018 at 1 pm and 7:30 pm with “Hidden Figures”

Carroll Arts Center Westminster Md. Dec. 5, 2017 Dec. 22, 2017 - - Carroll Arts Center celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with “Hidden Figures”

The Carroll County Arts Council has a tradition of presenting thought-provoking programs in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This year they will screen the 2016 film Hidden Figures on Monday, January 15 at 1 pm and 7:30 pm. As this is a day of service, they will offer free admission to anyone who has volunteered for a non-profit organization during the past year.

Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe.) Brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

The matinee showing at 1 pm will have open captioning to increase the enjoyment of movies at the Arts Center for those with hearing impairments. The 7:30 pm showing will have captioning if requested in advance. Assistive Listening Devices are always available.

Sponsored by Carroll Community College, Hidden Figures runs 2 hrs 7 mins and is rated PG. Tickets are $7 for adults; $6 for ages 25 & under and ages 60 & up. CCAC Members get additional 10% off. Tickets can be purchased on-line or at the box office. There is no snow date.

The Carroll Arts Center is located at 91 West Main Street in downtown Westminster. For more information go to www.CarrollCountyArtsCouncil.org or call 410/848-7272.

Dec. 29, 2006: This was one weird year Doug Tallman, Gazette

Dec. 29, 2006: This was one weird year Doug Tallman, Gazette

9Jan2018: My note - - I was doing file maintenance on the top stories from years past and came across this one from Doug Tallman. It is one my favorite year-end stories.

As a matter of fact, it is one of my favorite stories, among many favorite stories written by Doug Tallman. Doug runs neck and neck with Katherine Heerbrandt, Bryan Sears, and Carrie Knauer, on my list of favorite story writers over the years. Just saying.

So, anyway, Doug wrote this in the Gazette on Dec. 29, 2006 – and I was surprised to see that it is still up on the web. (I wish my old stories were still on the web – but that is another subject for another day. For me, 2000 stories later, and sadly only a fraction are still on the web…. Sad.

So, Doug wrote: “This was one weird year — and don’t forget the rats! - From ogling to challenging fitness for the office, 2006 was full of unexpected twists and turns,” Friday, Dec. 29, 2006 by Douglas Tallman, Staff Writer

ANNAPOLIS — There were times in 2006 when it was hard to keep a straight face.

It was the year a political icon asked a comely aide to walk away so he could get another view of her derriere. On Election Day, voters asked the icon to do the same.

It was the year a quick-thinking politician administered the Heimlich maneuver to a choking man, who turned out to be his political rival.

It was the year an attorney general candidate was barred from running. Days before Election Day, another AG candidate faced a similar challenge.

And it was the year that the renovation of Annapolis office space led to rats roaming the hallways.

‘‘It looks like a Mel Brooks movie,” said D. Bruce Poole, a former House majority leader who observed the state capital’s shenanigans from a safe distance, his law office in Hagerstown.

Once again this year we followed a family tradition to get together for a musical, opera, or theater event at places like the Kennedy Center in Washington DC or the Hippodrome in Baltimore. In the past we have taken cruises together or traveled to New York as a family. This year we went to see Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo, at 'The National Theater,' 1321 Pennsylvania Ave. NW 27Dec2017. Before the play, we shared dinner at Occidental Grill and Seafood, 1475 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington DC 20004 www.occidentaldc.com 27Dec2017. We really enjoyed the excellent production of Les Miserables – and really enjoyed the family time together.
