Beef Bulgogi
Beef Bulgogi
For dinner this evening, Babylon family foodies, Marnie and Louis Paumier, made Beef Bulgogi, a Korean meal that literally means 'fire meat' in Korean. Thursday, June 7, 2018
For 10 person (ish) do 200ml soy sauce, 200 ml water, 50ml mirin, 100g sugar, 1 table spoon of minced garlic, 1 tea spoon of pepper. The key is how the sauce tastes before you mix it with meat. I would taste it and control the sweetness by sugar or honey. And sesame oil and sesame seeds. Probably 2.5 lb thin shaved beef.

The Historical Society of Carroll
County announces the 2018 winners of the annual Mike Eaton scholarship.
June 4,
2018 by Caroline Babylon https://patch.com/maryland/westminster/2018-winners-annual-mike-eaton-scholarship-announced
Since
2011 The Historical Society of Carroll County has been awarding the Mike Eaton
Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to honor the memory of William
Granville “Mike” Eaton, an English teacher at Westminster High School from 1935
to 1971. He also directed plays and advised the Key Club. He inspired his
students to challenge and improve themselves in many ways. He always believed
in the great potential of his students to excel, and they have proven him
correct.
Mr.
Eaton brought panache to his classroom with his deck of index cards from which
he pulled the targets of his well-placed questions. The cards brought their
share of insecurity to the ill prepared, but Westminster High School seniors
began to discover something, Shakespeare wasn't so bad after all. Mr. Eaton
commanded the classroom. Heading the Drama Club at Westminster High School, he
also commanded excellence in theatrical offerings.
Mr.
Eaton was born in Centerville, Maryland and passed away from cancer in 1995. He
graduated from Western Maryland College in 1930 and subsequently went on to
earn his Master’s degree at Columbia University in New York.
For over
three decades, Mike Eaton was Thelma Hoffman’s star boarder at Hoffman’s Inn,
now owned by the Historical Society of Carroll County and known as Cockey’s
Tavern, its name from when it was built in 1820.
The Mike
Eaton Scholarship has been established through the Historical Society of
Carroll County to recognize inspirational teachers, like Mr. Eaton, in the
lives of the current graduating class of Westminster High School. The winning
students wrote an essay about their most inspirational teacher.
Two Mike Eaton scholarships were
awarded this spring to graduating seniors from Westminster High School. The
teachers in the winning essays were also recognized at the Westminster High
School awards ceremonies on June 4, 2018.
The two
winning students were Margie Spann and Richard Folderauer. They each received a
$500.00 scholarship and their most influential teacher received an engraved
school bell.
Mr. Folderauer
named Mrs. Melissa Purdy as his most influential teacher. Ms. Spann named Mrs.
Kim Saltsburg as her most influential teacher.
Like Mr.
Eaton, Mrs. Purdy is the Westminster High School drama teacher. According to
Mr. Folderauer, every year Mrs. Purdy puts her heart, mind, and soul into three
productions. She is a director, mentor, and friend to her students. She teaches
kids from all walks of life the importance and the joy of performing. By doing
that, she gives her students a love for performing and has inspired Richard
Folderauer to inspire others with that love of performing.
Ms.
Spann called Ms. Saltsburg an inspirational teacher whom she said was
energetic, humorous, and beaming. She made interactive lessons that inspired Spann
to anticipate going to class, look forward to studying for tests, and yearn to
learn more. All of this happened in Mrs. Saltsburg’s Human Anatomy and
Physiology class. While she introduced many to the pungent smell of
formaldehyde; in the process she helped Margie Spann flourish in class and
introduced her to the medical field, as she now plans to become a doctor.
Mr.
Folderauer and Ms. Spann will both be attending the University of Maryland,
College Park.
The
Historical Society is pleased to be sponsoring this scholarship in memory of
Mike Eaton who was an influential and memorable teacher at Westminster High
School for over 35 years.

Nancy Lee Anania, age 84, died on May 19, 2018 at her home in Ellicott City, MD. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence Eugene Mulcahy and Eva May Leister Mulcahy. Nancy was the wife of the late Peter V. Anania, Sr., her husband of 63 years.
Nancy was a loving mother who raised four sons. A gifted artist, she took joy in painting, crafts such as making dollhouses, wreaths, and holiday decorations, sewing as well as designing landscapes and interiors. She enjoyed listening to all kinds of music, from opera to rock. She had a beautiful voice and got a kick out of singing with her sons in their garage band. Her favorite artist was opera singer Luciano Pavarotti.
Nancy was a lover of life and learning, and an avid history buff. She enjoyed colonial Jamestown in particular. She was fond of art museums and seeing her old neighborhood in Hamden where she grew up.

Women Who Know Their Place
Women Who Know Their Place
Happy Monday - - The Monday morning thought of the day to
get the week started-out correctly. This was shared with me by way of an email
by a very wise women in our community. 7May2018 https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10213833935216141&set=a.10203968656950350.1073741840.1040426835&type=3&theater
Women Who Know Their Place
Barbara Walters did a story on gender roles in Kabul,
Afghanistan, several years before our involvement in the Afghan conflict.
She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind
their husbands.
She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still
walk behind their husbands. Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime,
the women now seem to and are happy to, maintain the old custom.
Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked,
"Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so
desperately to change?"
The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and
without hesitation said, "Land Mines."
No matter what language you speak or where you go,
Moral of this story is:
BEHIND EVERY MAN, THERE'S A REALLY SMART WOMAN.

“I debated for a second on who to send the e-mail to. I
decided to send it directly to Sheriff Jim DeWees. Thinking it would turn out
the way the Florida efforts did, I didn’t expect much, especially being I’m not
even the parent, I’m just a concerned friend of the family. Within thirty
minutes of the e-mail, Cpl. Jeremy Holland contacted me. When my phone rang, I

Maryland State Police are
investigating an incident at the Carroll County Regional Airport that resulted
in a plane coming off of the runway, Cpl. Jordan Snedeker confirmed Thursday
night.
At 8:21 p.m., the emergency communications center was
alerted to a “small plane crash,” Westminster Volunteer Fire Company public
information officer Kevin Dayhoff said. Multiple units from Westminster
responded, he said.
Upon arrival, they located a small plane off of the runway
and occupants were out of the plane, Dayhoff said.
There were no injuries, he added.
At about 9:10 p.m., Snedeker said police believe
something happened while the plane was landing, causing it to come off the
runway and into the grass. Police don’t yet know the type of plane or how many
people were inside, Snedeker said.
Maryland State Police will be investigating to find out what
happened and what caused the incident, he said.

Westminster Fire Department responds to a serious motor
vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 140 and Englar Road that snarled
traffic for several hours Saturday
April 21, 2018 by Westminster Fire Department PIO and
Chaplain Kevin Dayhoff
A serious motor vehicle accident at the intersection of
Route 140 and Englar Road snarled traffic for several hours Saturday evening
just outside of Westminster.
On Sat., April 21, 2018, at approximately 8:30 in the
evening, units from the Westminster Fire Department, Westminster City Police,
and the Maryland State Police responded to a call for a two-vehicle head-on
vehicle collision at the intersection of Englar Road and Route 140 – Baltimore
Blvd.
Emergency units responded quickly to the scene. Upon arrival,
Westminster Fire Department Lt. Guy Garheart found a two-vehicle motor vehicle
accident in the middle of the intersection. A Taneytown police officer on his
way to work had happened upon the scene and was assisting the response.
Although there was significant property damage to both vehicles, fortunately
no-one was injured seriously in the accident.
And fortunately, no first responders - police officers, EMS
providers or firefighters were hurt. This, in spite of a series of several
serious incidents in which drivers drove around the cones and flares at traffic
control points – and through the accident scene, in order to hasten their
travels - directly endangering the lives of the first responders.
The accident remains under investigation.
