Ellsworth Cemetery to receive $65K grant

Ellsworth Cemetery to receive $65K grant

CARROLL COUNTY TIMES |JUL 08, 2020

Ellsworth Cemetery in Westminster is going to receive a $65,000 grant to help with mapping and upkeep.

Last week, the State Board of Public Works approved a request from the Maryland Historical Trust, to approve a $65,000 grant to the Community Foundation of Carroll County, Incorporated under the African American Heritage Preservation Program to provide mapping of Ellsworth Cemetery as well as conservation of grave markers, according to a news release from state Sen. Justin Ready’s office.

In 1876, six African American Union Army veterans established this cemetery to provide a burial place for Westminster’s African American residents. The cemetery was named after Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth, the first Union officer to die in the Civil War. This request was seconded in writing and supported by District 5′s state legislators, Ready and Dels. Susan Krebs, April Rose, and Haven Shoemaker.

Coming Up at at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster Maryland 7/9/2020

Worship this Weekend
July 12
God’s word is like the rain that waters the earth and brings forth vegetation. It is also like the sower who scatters seed indiscriminately. Our lives are like seeds sown in the earth. Even from what appears to be little, dormant, or dead, God promises a harvest. At the Lord’s table we are fed with the bread of life, that we may bear fruit in the world.
Grace’s worship service will be posted online
beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.

We begin including the celebration of Holy Communion
at Home this weekend. (Please see the link below for
information about joining in Holy Communion.)

You can tune in through Facebook or on
YouTube channel – gracelc21.
Holy Communion
Preparation, Celebration, and Clean up

Click here for the letter explaining the rationale for adding Holy Communion to our on line worship services. You also will find the pastors’ instructions for how to prepare the elements, celebrate the sacrament, and clean up properly after the worship service.
Little Friends of Grace Needs Your Help
Little Friends of Grace is planning to reopen in the fall utilizing all of the CDC and Department of Education Guidelines. Among the measures required for a safer learning environment, each child must have a box with his/her individual supplies. We expect 80 to 90 students this fall. We could use your help in collecting these supplies. If you can contribute anything from the list below, please drop your item(s) off at the church office or the box outside the LFOG door at the back of the church during church and preschool office hours which are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 – 3:30 p.m.  The items needed are:

90 - 16 count Crayola crayons
90 - Elmer's school Glue Sticks
90 - blunt tip scissors
90 - large, round Children's paint brushes
Volunteers Needed For In Person Worship
We are working toward the return to in person worship services beginning on August 8 & 9. This return depends upon (1) a continued low rate of virus spread in our county and (2) the availability of volunteers. If you plan to return to in person worship, please consider volunteering in order to make the services possible. Please click here to sign up to help.

Confirmation Projects
Our Second Year Confirmation Students created projects to express their faith. They were shared with parents, teachers and mentors via a zoom meeting. Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing pictures of the projects with you. We think the students did a great job and hope that you agree.

The project displayed at the top of this email is a picture of Camryn Cruz showing her drawing of the Earth in God’s hands surrounded by flowers that represent new life.
TECT Paying It Forward
Do you have a job around your house or yard for which you need some help? Middle and High School Youth from Grace and Trinity are willing to help. In thanksgiving for the ways in which our congregations have supported youth on their summer mission trips, our young people want to say “thanks” by paying it forward! While there is no guarantee they will be able to do your job, it is worth asking!! Use this link for the form you can fill out to request their services.
Understanding Spiritual Gifts
A six week Bible Study
There is still time to join in an inspiring Bible Study that will help you look at your own life in Christ. The class will be offered on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. and Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. You can move back and forth between the classes as your schedule requires.

Books are still available for pick up at the church office. If you prefer a digital copy, you can find it on Amazon. Look for “Understanding Spiritual Gifts” by Kay Arthur, David & BJ Lawson.

If you plan to participate, please email Pastor Martha at mclementson@gracelc.org so that we can send you the zoom link.
