Mrs. Nancy Lee Anania December 21, 1933 - May 19, 2018

Obituary for Mrs. Nancy Lee Anania December 21, 1933 - May 19, 2018

Nancy Lee Anania, age 84, died on May 19, 2018 at her home in Ellicott City, MD. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence Eugene Mulcahy and Eva May Leister Mulcahy. Nancy was the wife of the late Peter V. Anania, Sr., her husband of 63 years.

Nancy was a loving mother who raised four sons. A gifted artist, she took joy in painting, crafts such as making dollhouses, wreaths, and holiday decorations, sewing as well as designing landscapes and interiors. She enjoyed listening to all kinds of music, from opera to rock. She had a beautiful voice and got a kick out of singing with her sons in their garage band. Her favorite artist was opera singer Luciano Pavarotti.

Nancy was a lover of life and learning, and an avid history buff. She enjoyed colonial Jamestown in particular. She was fond of art museums and seeing her old neighborhood in Hamden where she grew up.

Nancy’s biggest passion was her family. She was a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Anyone who walked through her door would be welcome and would never leave hungry. Her kitchen stayed open 24 hours, her holiday celebrations were legendary, and she went out of her way to make every gathering unforgettable.

Nancy is survived by her sons, Peter V. Anania, Jr., David S. Anania, and his wife Barbara Anania, Andrew J. Anania, grandchildren Elizabeth Anania, Ashen Anania, Robin Harlan, and Tara Anania, and great grandchildren Dayja, Lily, Ella, Chloe, and Destiny. She was predeceased by her husband Peter V. Anania, Sr. and her son, Thomas S. Anania.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 from 5 to 7pm. at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville .A Funeral service will follow at 7:00pm.

Bowman family awarded annual Ag Center Pioneer Award

A year ago, I wrote - Time Flies “Bowman family awarded annual Ag Center Pioneer Award” by Kevin Dayhoff February 24, 2017

Romantic that I am, I took my wife out on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, to the annual Carroll County Agriculture Center dinner. Since 1993, the annual dinner has been used as an opportunity to honor individuals and businesses with the "Pioneer Award," in recognition for longstanding service to the Carroll County agriculture community and the Agriculture Center,

This year's award went to the R.D. Bowman family, which has been a cornerstone of the agricultural community through the family businesses that date back to 1928. Dirk Bowman and his wife Julie attended the dinner to receive the award on behalf of the family.

Dirk, his brother Dale, and his sister Dawn DeVivo are the third-generation owners of the Westminster feed sales business, R.D. Bowman & Sons Inc., and the Home & Garden Center, which opened in 1981.

According to a March 24, 1993 article in The Baltimore Sun by writers Ellie Baublitz and Tom Keyser, "In 1928, Ralph Dutterer Bowman bought a little country grocery store in Union Mills on a dirt road that is now Route 97, or Littlestown Pike. He operated the store for more than 30 years, during which time the big event was the Friday night banana auction.

Bill Dulany left behind a legacy of leadership in the community - Time Flies by Kevin Dayhoff for Sunday, April 16, 2017

I was very young and full of many questions when I first met Del. Dulany. This was when I just started to have an all-consuming interest in history and I would have chance opportunities to talk with him. Westminster was a much smaller community back then and he was a delegate representing Carroll County in the House of Delegates 1963-66… He served with my cousin, Maryland Del. Wilbur W. Magin, 1959-1967, and distinguished Carroll County delegates Jacob M. Yingling, and Thomas R. O'Farrell.

Decades later when I was an elected official, Dulany always had time to give a helping hand, lend scholarly advice, and to give me the academic legislative history of a particular public policy.

Bill Dulany left behind a legacy of leadership in the community

Time Flies by Kevin Dayhoff for Sunday, April 16, 2017

Former Carroll County Delegate William B. Dulany was remembered by friends, family, community leaders, and colleagues at a celebration of his life, accomplishments and legacy at a service at the Beasman Auditorium at Fairhaven in Sykesville earlier in the month.

Dulany was 89 when he passed away on March 19, 2017. A Carroll County native son, Dulany was born in Sykesville, where he served as the class president at Sykesville High School before he graduated and joined the Navy during World War II.

Many of us had gathered at Fairhaven early and traded memories of the various ways Dulany had touched and enriched our lives. He was a larger than life icon in the community and most of us spoke in hushed tones about our past experiences with Dulany and how he helped shape the Carroll County we know today.

Folks from all walks of life attended the service. McDaniel College was represented. Dulany was a 1950 graduate of Western Maryland College, now McDaniel. He served on the college’s board of trustees from 1976 to 2006.

Conversion to the Museum

The Sykesville Schoolhouse Museum is a labor of love as well as a work in progress, being restored to its 1916 appearance. Built between July and December 1903, at a cost of $530.50, the building has lived many lives.

Between January 1904 and May 1938 it was a one-room schoolhouse, managed by local community trustees, for children of the surrounding black community from both sides of the Patapsco River during the days of segregation.

Between July 1939 and late 1981 the building served as a residence with its main floor divided into four rooms. Since 1982, the building was repeatedly slated for demolition but was saved each time by the efforts of local residents.

By the mid-1990’s, with support from the Town of Sykesville, the project was in line to receive state restoration seed grants. However, their implementation was delayed while deeds and other issues were resolved. Millennium celebrations provided a major boost in the effort to save the Schoolhouse.

The White House Millennium Council, in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, listed the Schoolhouse as a Save America’s Treasures Project, and the Maryland Commission for Celebration 2000 selected it as a statewide Treasure of the Month. The same year the Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage selected the Sykesville Schoolhouse as the county and statewide beneficiary project for the year.

Restoration
The Schoolhouse is being restored in phases based on structural needs and available budget. Our first phase of work, which is nearing completion, contains the most noticeable work on the building making it weather tight, secure and removing some alterations made to convert the school to a residence.

Even though construction is not complete, we are always happy to open for special events, tours and welcome any opportunity for the community to check on our progress.

Future projects include installing electricity, heat, and air conditioning, and refinishing the interior surfaces. Later phases will include the addition of facilities like storage, bathrooms, and meeting the landscape demands of our hillside location.

This work will be completed as financial support for the Schoolhouse becomes available. Our goal is to open the site on a regular basis once the basic construction work is complete.

Goals
Since the beginning of the effort to save the Schoolhouse, the objective has been to preserve the site by creating a museum and community center. Initially, the effort was under taken by members of the Schoolhouse Road community. As the project developed, the Town of Sykesville offered support in meeting these goals.

A volunteer, non-profit entity, the Sykesville Development Corporation (SDC) was created to oversee and direct the project. The SDC’s mission is to preserve the Schoolhouse by telling the story of the building’s past and ensuring its role in the community’s future.

To accomplish the goal of opening a museum, a living history approach is underway. Visitors will have an opportunity to return to the days when one teacher managed 6 or 7 grades with 40 or more pupils in just one room. To fill in the broad gaps in the Schoolhouse’s history, several research initiatives have been started.

College interns have researched written records from newspapers, land records, minutes from early Board of Education meetings, and the like. A local anthropologist has volunteered to record oral histories about the Schoolhouse and recollections of the community.

Join the Effort to Save the Schoolhouse
Once the Sykesville Schoolhouse is open it will be the first museum in Carroll County devoted to African-American history. The Sykesville Development Corporation (SDC), is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization devoted to preserving the Sykesville Schoolhouse.

We have many needs in order to make the dream a reality, please fill out our online form to help save the schoolhouse.

Gifts should be made payable to: Sykesville Development Corporation Mail to:
