January – May 2002 Westminster Vol. Fire Department newsletter

President's Message (Jim Bangerd)

The past year has been full of many positive changes for our organization. We placed in service a new engine and a new medic unit.   Through the generous contribution from the estate of Kathryn Baumgardner, we were able to keep up with current technology by purchasing a thermal-imaging camera and replace our breathing apparatus with units that comply with all the latest standards. With the assistance and support of the City of Westminster, an additional paramedic’s position was funded Monday through Friday from 7 am to 5 pm.

2001 bore witness to the most tragic event in our lifetime.  September 11 saw our country experience the worst act of terrorism ever committed on American soil.   Over 300 fire, police and EMS workers lost their lives while saving thousands of others at the World Trade Center in New York City.   While the magnitude of this disaster caused all Americans great pain, it was especially difficult for members of the emergency service community.  Each one of us was stunned that so many of our brothers and sisters made the ultimate sacrifice.

Please remember those that gave the last full measure in order that others would live.  Men and women who pushed fear aside and performed their duty in the face of death.   We mourn not the loss, but celebrate their noble lives.    They have become a symbol of the very best this country has to give.

Fire Chief's Message (Jay Wallace)

During the year 2001, we responded to 1308 fire/rescue/Hazmat calls for service, which is an increase of 141 calls from 2000.  Many goals set forth at the beginning of the year were accomplished the hard work by the Officers and many of the members.  Engine 33 was placed in service finalizing a replacement plan that began in 1999, by Past Chief Jeff Alexander.   All equipment has been equipped with new breathing apparatus, and Engine 32 and 33 are equipped with AED's.    The department now has a Thermal Imager.   The many efforts of this Department have greatly increased our abilities to provide the best service of our community.
