A Tribute to Marlin K. Hoff
Nationally prominent breeder of Holstein dairy cattle since 1963 and
tenor with Herb Sell's Carroll County Choral Society.

Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, Carroll County and the greater Westminster community suffered a great loss with the death of Marlin Kroh Hoff, 66, of New Windsor, who passed away at his home after an extended illness.
Mr. Hoff was born June 7, 1938, in Baltimore. He was the son of the late S. David and Miriam Kroh Hoff. He was the husband of Kathleen Roach Hoff, his wife of 41 years.
Marlin was the owner of Coldsprings Farms, New Windsor, and a nationally prominent breeder of Holstein dairy cattle since 1963.
He was a graduate of Westminster High School, class of 1956 and the University of Maryland in 1967, with a bachelor of science degree in dairy science.
Sparking his lifelong career was winning the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest in 1959. In 1972, he was selected as one of four National Outstanding Young Farmers by the Jaycees.
Over the years, he has bred many outstanding cows and bulls. He was honored by the Carroll County Holstein Club with its Outstanding Senior Breeder Award. The Maryland Holstein Association awarded him its Junior Breeder, Senior Breeder and Distinguished Service Award.
He was an honoree by the Maryland Dairy Shrine. Most recently, he was the recipient of the 2000 Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder Award by the National Dairy Shrine. He was a past president of the Carroll County Holstein Club and the Maryland Holstein Association and chairman of the 1981 National Convention in Baltimore.
He served on the Holstein U.S.A. board of directors, was a charter director of the Holstein Foundation, past director of Sire Power Inc., longtime director of the Maryland State Fair, director of the Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers Association Inc. and served on the Carroll County Property Tax Assessment Appeal Board.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Westminster, and the church choir for many years. He was a tenor soloist since high school, singing at numerous functions and weddings, including his own.
He sang for many years with Herb Sell's Carroll County Choral Society. In college, he sang the lead in the production of "Guys & Dolls" and again later with the New Windsor Players.
He greatly enjoyed golf and was a member of Holly Hills Country Club, Ijamsville. Marlin will be remembered by his family and friends as one of keen mind, boundless energy, outspokenness and his generous support of youth programs. His life philosophy is best summed up in his favorite song, "The Impossible Dream."
He was predeceased by son Patrick Adam Hoff in 1978 and brother Malcolm D. "Bud" Hoff in 1993. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Ian A. Hoff and Matthew M. Hoff and daughter-in-law Debra L., all of New Windsor; grandchildren Courtney, Brook and Alicia Hoff; brother Samuel C. Hoff and wife Georgia S. of Gamber; sister Shirley A. Hoff of Westminster; sister-in-law Arlene B. Hoff of Uniontown; an aunt and uncle; and nephews and nieces.
