Baltimore football and Westminster have a long history together

Certainly many people were disappointed when the Baltimore Ravens announced Dec. 2 that the team will not be returning to its McDaniel College summer training camp.

In a Carroll Eagle article that day on ExploreCarroll.com, Westminster Mayor Utz spoke for many, "It's almost a 50-year tradition that's being broken… That's the sad part about it."

The tradition and history of Baltimore football and Westminster first began when the newspaper announced ran on Feb. 11, 1949, "College Campus To Be Used By Colts … Coach Isbell Expects to Bring 55 Players to Train, Starting in July … Baltimore's football Colts are going to train at Western Maryland College this year."

McKeldin To Speak At Hampstead War Memorial Dedication

The War Memorial Association, in conjunction with the American Legion and the Rotary International, are pleased to announce that former Mayor of Baltimore, Theodore R. McKeldin will give the address of welcome at the Dedication of the Memorial on November 1st, 1947.

Although the program has not been completed, a number of Military personnel and civilian dignitaries will be on the speaker's platform.

The Commanding officers, or their alternates representing the Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard branches of the armed forces of this area, in addition to former United States Senator George L. Radcliffe, Howard S. LeRoy, Governor of the 180th District of Rotary International, Jack Tribby, State Adjutant of the American Legion, Samuel M. Jenness, Superintendent of Public Schools of Carroll County, and others will be introduced by Mr. McKeldin.

The committee is formulating plans to develop a most impressive military and civic parade, which will precede the dedication exercises. All citizens are invited to these exercises in order to pay tribute to the members of the armed services of World Wars I and II, who are being honored on this occasion.

Scrambling Desperately To Get Rid Of Nylons, Shoes, Piece Goods And Silks

After four flourishing years, the bottom finally has dropped out of the black markets with a refreshing thud. And war-fattened marketeers are scrambling desperately to get rid of their once precious stockpiles of nylons, shoes, piece goods and silks at deflated prices.

They took an enormous loss when gas rationing was called off. Nylon hose, prime specialty of the wartime black market, has slumped almost overnight from $15 to $5 a pair along Broadway and Park Ave., where the traffic has been particularly heavy.

The spectacular decline extends to such other black market staples as meat, used cars and rubber goods. You can even get a little Scotch whisky if you know the dealer. War-short canned goods, such as imported sardines and selected salmon and tuna fish are finding their way back to retailers' shelves—and meat is once more hanging publicly from butchers' hooks.

End of gas rationing caused a panic in the black market. It was the same in other black market fields, supply overtaking demand for the first time since Pearl Harbor. Consumers sat back to wait for promised postwar commodity—of better grade, price and style

Consolidation Planned By Three Westminster Banks

Democratic Advocate, August 20, 1948

The proposed consolidation of three of Westminster's banks, The Westminister Savings Bank, The Farmers and Mechanic National Bank of Westminster, and The First National Bank of Westminster, was announced yesterday.

The three institutions would become a national banking association under the amended charter of The First National Bank of Westminster. Assets of the merged institution, to be known as Carroll County National Bank of Westminster, would be in excess of $41,000,000.

According to the joint statement issued by the Presidents of the three banks, conversations among the institutions have been going on for several months.

A joint consolidation committee, consisting of three Directors from each bank, has worked out the details of the consolidation and with officials have drawn up an agreement which was approved by the Board of Directors of all three institutions without dissent on July 29th last.

Horse Show Big Attraction — 76 Horses and Ponies Compete; Largest Attendance In History; Teeter Cup To Chas. Rider - The twelfth annual horse and pony show, held Sunday at the Westminster Riding Club, drew a large attendance.

There were 76 ponies and horses shown on the picturesque show grounds, claimed to be one of the most attractive in the state. The show got off to a start before 10 o'clock and under the supervision of the horse show secretary, William Robinette, the events moved along smoothly and in good time.

The show closed after 7 p.m. with the majority of the patrons remaining until the last class contest was completed. One of the features of the show was the presentation of the John S. Teeter Memorial Cup in the open jumping class by the late horseman's widow, who was escorted into the ring to witness the contest and to make the presentation, by the president of the club, Dr. L. N. Hitchcock.

The late Mr. Teeter was a horse show enthusiast and patronized many of the shows throughout the seasons with his string of winners. His sons were admired for their horsemanship. First leg on the memorial cup went to Charles Ryder, owner and rider of Big Boy.

Democratic Advocate, May 20, 1949: Horne Robbery Was Fabricated

Baltimore Paint Salesman Faked Report After Losing Sales; Planned To Commit Suicide—Herbert F. Horne, 40, Baltimore paint salesman, admitted to State Police Tuesday night that his report of hold up and robbery at Westminster last Friday night was a hoax he practiced to cover up his failure to land business contracts at Sparrows Point and Westminster, State Trooper James S. Poteet revealed.

Horne claimed he was heldup at a traffic light on Main street in Westminster, forced to drive north to town, where he was assaulted, robbed and his car taken.

Trooper Poteet said Horne confessed Tuesday night that he was not robbed and that the entire story was concocted to win sympathy for business failures.

No Xmas Decorations Or Treat For Children Here

Announcement was made by Mayor Joseph L. Mathias that the municipal decorations for the coming Christmas season will be limited to the decorating of the tree at "The Forks".

Due to the lack of available manpower and the scarcity of required materials, the Mayor said the extensive decorating plan, which prevailed prior to the war, would not be resumed this year.

Mayor Mathias also announced that the City could not offer the Christmas treat to the children of the community this year because of the limitations to the supply of candies and fruits.

On Friday evening, February 25, 1949, at 6 o'clock the Mechanicsville School and Parent Teachers' Association will give a dinner in honor of the County Commissioners, the Board of Education, the County Treasurer, the Tax Collector, the Building Committee and teachers of the school in appreciation for the new school.

The guests will be invited to the auditorium where a turkey dinner will be served by the patrons. A short program will follow the dinner when the toastmaster, Mr. J. Randle will call on the superintendent, Mr. Samuel Jenness, the President of the Board of Education, Mr. Clyde Hesson, the President of the County Commissioners, Mr. Emory Berwager, the P.T.A. President, Mrs. Clarence Dell, and the Principal, Mr. Ralph Yealy who will also give brief remarks.

This image shows Main Street Westminster MD after a heavy snowfall. I do not recall where I got this image… I have always thought that renowned Westminster photographer Charles Magee took the photo after a heavy snowfall in 1946, but this is only hypothecation and in the end, I do not know the year or the photographer. LIBRARY MAKING AN APPEAL - The Westminster Public Library is again making its annual appeal to the citizens of Westminster.

February is known as Library Month and it is hoped that many generous contributions will be received.

Present members of the Library are urged to renew their memberships, and now members are welcome to join, at any time. The fee is $1.00 per year and may be sent to the Librarian. Mrs. Martha Shaw, or to the treasurer, Mr. C. Ray Fogle.

The Library is open on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturday evenings from 6:30 to 8, also Thursday morning from 10 to 12.

Many new and interesting books have been added during the past year, especially in the juvenile section. Parents are urged to come and bring the children as there is something for all ages.

Grammy bicycling with roommate c 1946

In May 2003, when this picture, from approximately 1946, of Grammy Evelyn Fluck Babylon on a bicycle with her roommate, Nadine (Deanie) Eustis at Gettysburg College became available; Grammy was asked to give us some additional information about the picture. Here, in part, is her response:

Grammy - how about keyboarding in a few words about this occasion for the family. When do you remember the picture being taken? What was the name of your roommate? Where was the picture taken? Did you bicycle a lot? Who took the picture? Did you have any goats at the time?

Grammy responded:

“No goats, but we had names for our bicycles. Mine was Pega'sus, and I'm sorry that I can't remember Deanie's bicycle's name. Nadine Eustis (Deanie) was my roommate for four years. She came from New Rochelle, NY… she was very down-to-earth, … very intelligent.

“She majored in French and was Phi Beta Kappa. Married a minister, Ted Lindquist, and made a very good minister's wife, I am led to believe.

“The picture was taken just outside our dorm on the G-burg campus, although I don't remember the occasion. We frequently bicycled around the battlefield. I as reminded, as I saw the picture, that Mamma had made the jacket that I am wearing. She'd probably made the plaid jumper I had on, also, but I don't remember that as well. She made most of my dresses and coats.

“I bought the bicycle with money that I had earned during the summer after my sophomore year as the nature counselor at a church girls' camp in the Poconos.

“We ‘parked’ the bikes just outside the door to the dorm. We lived in the tiny room that was straight across the hall from that door. My bike was stolen during my senior year. No, of course, I had not put the lock on it that night.

“But life got busy with dates with fellas who had cars - like Dave - and a bicycle was not as big a necessity as it once had been, so Pegasus was not replaced.

“Deanie died just before we came home from Florida this year, and Ted found that picture and sent it to me. I was really pleased to get it because it is very good of Deanie.

“Sorry, that's a few more than a ‘few words,’ but you shouldn't get these old folks started if you don't want to hear a good bit. Love, Grammy”

If there's anything that jumps out for an historian in any review of old newspaper articles, it's the age-old cliche that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Such a dynamic is certainly the case when one examines the events of July in Carroll County history.

At the last meeting of the mayor and Westminster Common Council, Ron Schroers, director of recreation and parks for the city, made presentations about service groups contributing to the city.

More than 60 years ago the July 11, 1947, edition of the now-defunct Democratic Advocate carried an article with much of same news.

It reported that the Westminster Lions Club had presented the mayor and council with their "latest improvement" to the Westminster playground — lights.

In other news from the 1940s, taxes were, of course, just as controversial then as they are today.

Public Schools Is A Local Responsibility - Federal Government Cannot Do A Better Job For Public Schools Than Local Communities Is The Belief—Washington, D. C., July

— One might almost be expected to believe that education of the youth of the country is a National political issue in 1948.

Government statistics show that in 1870 illiteracy in the United States was 20 percent. The average percent of illiteracy among native whites in the United States is less than two percent.

To say that the support of local schools is not the responsibility of the communities in which children live is dodging the issue. It is just as much the duty of parents in small districts to send their children to school as it is to put clothes on their backs and food in their stomachs.

The trouble that exists in nearly every part of the United States is the growing demand that the National Government must furnish the means and money to carry on all kinds of civic responsibilities, including paying the teachers and all the school expenses.

The Federal Government cannot—and will not—do a better job for public schools than local communities.

Democratic Advocate, June 22, 1945 - Sugar To Affect Coca-Cola Supply - W. C. Meredith, President Of Coca-Cola Co., Announces The Quality Will Be Maintained - The supply of Coca-Cola in Westminster definitely will be affected by the further curtailment in the supply of sugar after July 1st because the manufacturer of that popular drink will not compromise with the use of substitutes.

However, an equitable system of rationing will be maintained in Westminster during the shortage, according to W. C. Meredith. President of the Westminster Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

The O. P. A. announced that the allotment of sugar to industrial users would be cut to 50% of the sugar used in the third quarter of 1941, effective July 1st.

"I am informed that this sugar shortage is world-wide and not merely national and is directly attributed to the confusion in the production and distribution of sugar occasioned by the war," said Mr. Meredith.

"Sugar is absolutely necessary in the manufacture of Coca-Cola. We cannot and will not use sweetening substitutes, and therefore when sugar is short, there must be a shortage in the amount of Coca-Cola, but you can be certain that the quality of Coca-Cola will remain unchanged.

This Day in History for February 11, 2009

Years ago in the middle of February, the Baltimore Colts, graffiti, a new jail, going hungry and sweet corn were on the minds of Carroll Countians – not necessarily in that order.

The Baltimore Colts are coming to town.

On February 11, 1949 it was announced that the Baltimore Colts were coming to Western Maryland College – now known as McDaniel College - to practice in the summer.

The now out-of-print Democratic Advocate carried the headline: “College Campus To Be Used By Colts- Coach Isbell Expects to Bring 55 Players to Train, Starting in July.”

The article proclaimed: “Baltimore's football Colts are going to train at Western Maryland College this year. Dr. Lowell S. Ensor, president of the Methodist school, and Walter S. Driskill, Colts general manager, have signed a contract providing for the city's All-America Football Conference squad to use the Westminster College's campus as a pre-season base of operations …

“Driskill … cited a number of advantages in choosing Western Maryland. "The school's facilities are ideal," he explained, "and because Westminster is only 30 miles from Baltimore the fans will have a good chance to get acquainted with us.’

Children will be children.

The February 11, 1921 edition of the now defunct Union Bridge Pilot lamented: “The practice of defacing property with chalk and pencils… appears to be a favorite pastime with some children.

“Newly painted buildings and porch columns appear to offer special inducements for the practice. The town authorities as a rule do not care to resort to legal measures with children, yet it appears a few applications of this medicine might prove effective.”

New jail to be built.

On February 13, 1970, another local newspaper that has long since fallen by the wayside, the Community Reporter, reported that the Carroll County Board of Commissioners, Robert M. McKinney, Paul J. Walsh, and Scott S. Bair, Jr., “have officially approved the building of a new county jail in Westminster for Carroll County…

“The issue… has been debated for several years. In 1968 the State Jail Inspector stated the jail was not usable and ordered it closed. Since that time, the county has been transporting prisoners to the Baltimore city jail.”

Eventually somebody is going to go hungry.

The February 13, 1920 edition of the Union Bridge Pilot, helped spread the alarm that according to Prof. T. C. Atkeson, the Washington representative of the National Grange: “The Cities Must Experience Industrial Crash.”

Professor Atkeson warned that an “economic crash that will bring down the cost of living, must originate in the cities, and reach such an extent that those who have left the country sections for "big wages" will come back to the country…

“He says there is no cure for high prices that Congress, or anybody, can provide, but that the situation must work itself out...

“He says the labor situation is rapidly making it impossible for the farmers to feed the country, and that eventually somebody is going to go hungry.”

Carroll County was sweet on sweet corn.

Four years later, on February 1, 1924, the Democratic Advocate reported: “One of the largest crops produced by the farmer in Carroll (is) sweet corn…

“The average yield (was) close to 3 tons (per acre.) … The cost ran from $13.00 to $13.50 per ton. Allowing only .25 per hour for labor and .10 per hour for horse.”

New Windsor Carroll County Maryland Citizens To Organize Fire Co.

NEW WINDSOR CITIZENS TO ORGANIZE FIRE CO.

Democratic Advocate, January 23, 1948

About 200 citizens interested in the organization of a fire department for New Windsor and community gathered in the Carlton theater Tuesday evening. Mr. Hesson presided at the meeting.

A state insurance representative spoke before the gathering and announced that the insurance rate would increase from 22 cents to 35 cents on a $100 if the fire department was not organized for that town.

When asked for members to support a fire department for the city about 65 put their names on the dotted line as members.

An election of officers will be held next Tuesday evening.

A new fire pumper will be purchased sometime in the near future.

The following from the Union Bridge Fire Department were present to assist in the organizations: Howard Gray, Emory G. Minnick and Lewis Baker.

Fiscal Situation Vastly Improved During 8 Years of Office—Annapolis, December 16 –

The State's Annuity Bond Fund Reserve as of December 31 will be approximately one million dollars, Governor Herbert R. O'Conor made known today, following a checkup made by the State's fiscal officers at his request.

As of November 30, the report showed, the balance in the Fund was $913,701.54, with receipts from taxes for the month of December estimated at $70,000.00 allowing for interest payments for the month of December of $13, 823,75, the Governor pointed out, there will be available in the Reserve as of the close of the calendar year a total of $969,877.79.
