She was the mom of our Westminster High School class of 1971 classmate, Dana Gonder. Our heart, prayers, and hugs go out to Dana, and his family.

Ollyne Gonder, 92, of Taneytown, MD, died peacefully on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at her home. Born July 2, 1924 in Taneytown, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Bessie (Reinamin) Eckard. She was the wife of Elmer William “Bill” Gonder, to whom she was married for nearly 75 years.

Ollyne was a seamstress. She was employed over the years by Joe Caparolla Clothing Company in Union Bridge, H.L. Hartz and Son in Frederick, and English American Clothiers in Westminster. She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God in Littlestown, PA for more than 40 years. She enjoyed baking, quilting, collecting cancelled stamps for mission projects, assembling note pads for use in Bibles and collecting red Fenton glassware and angel figurines. In her younger years, Ollyne enjoyed watching dirt track races. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are sons, Dana Gonder and wife Trisha of Phoenix, AZ, and Larry Gonder and wife Brenda of Thurmont, MD; grandchildren, Brian Ebaugh of York, PA, Laura Rigsby of Frederick, MD, Rebecca Gonder of Thurmont, MD, and Abigail Holzer and Tristen Gonder of Phoenix, AZ; great-grandson, Austin Rigsby; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Helen Walker, Flossie Fogle, and Grace Ehrman; and brothers, Donald, William, and Raymond Eckard.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Bethel Assembly of God, 1125 Frederick Pike, Littlestown, PA, with the Rev. Garry Sheaffer officiating. Burial will follow at Grace United Church of Christ Cemetery in Taneytown. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD.

Memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave, Westminster, MD, 21157.

Woody will be greatly missed. We have all benefited greatly from his service to our country and our community. You have our deepest sympathy. Caroline Babylon and Kevin Dayhoff:

Elwood “Woody” Edward Swam, 80, of Hampstead, died peacefully on Saturday, January 7, 2017. Born September 21, 1936, he was the son of the late John Henry and Iova Walker Swam. Woody is survived by his wife and best friend of forty-five (45) years, Phyllis J. Zumbrun.

Woody lived his entire life in Carroll County, Maryland. Born and raised in Manchester, he graduated from Manchester High School as president of the Class of 1954. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy for flight training. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he pursued several business positions while attending law school at the University of Baltimore. Upon graduation, he opened his law practice in Hampstead, which he pursued for forty-six (46) successful years.

Woody dedicated his life to his law practice and the clients he served. In his spare time, he enjoyed travel, golf, fine dining, and entertaining. “Pushing the envelope,” he always welcomed challenges and would rise to the occasion with his cleverness and wit. Being quite a rascal himself in his youth, he enjoyed interacting with young people and served as a mentor to many. Investments have always been an intense interest of his, but his investment in others brought him the greatest dividends.

Woody was a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the Carroll County Bar Association, and the Jaycees. He served on the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission and the Trial Courts Judicial Nominating Commission – Eighth District. As a behind the scenes advocate, he endorsed and supported the missions and roles of NESAP, Carroll Hospice. Lineboro-Manchester Lions Club, local fire departments, and educational opportunities.

Surviving in addition to his wife are brother, John Swam of Manchester; brother Robert (Bob) Swam and wife, Carol, of Worton; sister, Patricia (Pat) Martak of Abington; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great nieces and great-great nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Annabell M. Baer.

In addition, he is survived by his extended family, Mark and Robyn Schaefer of Hampstead; Jason, Laura, and Mattie Tyler of Westminster; and Emily Schaefer and Thomas Nelson, of Arlington, VA.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A. 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester, MD 21102 from 3-5 and 7-9p.m. and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Interment is private.

F. David Schaeffer, 96, of Westminster, MD, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 surrounded by his loving family at Brightview Westminster Ridge in Westminster. Born June 9, 1920 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Noah Luther and Elizabeth Gilmore (Slagle) Schaeffer. He was the husband of Hilda M. “Bobbye” (McDaniel) Schaeffer, to whom he was married for 72 years.

David graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1937 with Cum Laude honors. While attending Gettysburg College, he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and was selected to join the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He graduated in 1941 earning a B.A. degree in Economics with Magna Cum Laude honors.

Upon graduation from Gettysburg College, David received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army from his ROTC training. He trained at various Army camps, including Camp Van Dorn, MS, where he met his future wife, Bobbye McDaniel of Baton Rouge, LA, at a USO dance.

While training with the 63rd Infantry Division, David was ordered to report to the Tenth Army at Fort Sam Houston, TX to train for the invasion of Okinawa toward the end of World War II. He remained in the Army Reserve as Lt. Colonel until 1953. He was a member of Westminster American Legion Post 31 and VFW Post 467.

David was co-owner of the former Schaeffer Lumber Company in Westminster, a business that he opened with his father and brother in 1946. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, gardening, and spending time with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are daughter, Dianne S. Bennett and husband Michael of Taneytown; sons, David “Mac” Schaeffer and wife Mary Ellen Melchiorre of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Lloyd Schaeffer and wife Cindy of Gettysburg, PA; grandsons, Jason Bennett and wife Laura of Westminster, and Matthew Schaeffer and wife Kimberly of Chantilly, VA; great-granddaughters, Brooke and Mackenzie Bennett, and Jaiden and Kennedy Schaeffer; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Edgar A. Schaeffer, and grandsons, Daniel and Steven Schaeffer.

A Funeral Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis Street, Westminster, MD with the Rev. Kevin Clementson officiating. Interment will follow at Kriders Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St, Westminster, MD, 21157, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Douglas Edward Menchey, 63, resident of Hampstead, Maryland, died Thursday, November 24, 2016. He was a member of the Westminster High School Class of 1971. He was born September 13, 1953

Douglas Edward Menchey, 63, resident of Hampstead, Maryland, died in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 24, 2016 at the Carroll Hospice Dove House from complications from cancer.

Born September 13, 1953 in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of E. Naomi (Halter) Menchey of Taneytown and the late Charles Edward Menchey. He is survived by his significant other, Laurie J. Bostic.

Doug graduated for Westminster High School Class of 1971. He was previously employed by Menchey Construction Company, and currently was employed with the Carroll County Public School System maintenance department. He enjoyed NASCAR, NHRA, and carpentry. He especially enjoyed time with his children and grandchildren; joking around with the guys in the shop; sharing good times with friends; and spending time in his favorite chair with all his kitties. He loved his diet coke, Yuengling beer, ice cream, lifesavers, and the movie Blazing Saddles. Doug was a good dad, friend, and mentor and will be dearly missed by all.

Surviving in addition to his mother and significant other are sons, Bryan Menchey of Manchester, Dan Menchey and wife Nicole of Kennedyville, and Justin Menchey of Hampstead; grandchildren, Brady, Daniel and Debra Menchey; sisters, Deborah Bean and husband James of Westminster and Dorothy Diehl of Hanover, PA; nephews, Randy Diehl, Jimmy Bean, and Bradley Diehl; former spouse, Carol Menchey of Dundalk; and furry feline “Radar”. He was predeceased by his 1st wife, Debbie Hudgins.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 91 Willis Street, Westminster with Rev. Eric Marstellar officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Silver Run. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Doug’s family wishes to publicly Thank Dr. Lentz and Dr. Kruter and the nurses and staff of CCU West, IMC South, and Dove House for the care and attention given to him and his family in the short time he was there.

Robert "Bob" Joseph Weber January 4, 1937 - November 12, 2016

Obituary for Robert "Bob" Joseph Weber: Robert Joseph “Bob” Weber, 79, of Westminster passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at his home.

Born on January 4, 1937, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Joseph George and Elizabeth Margaret Moffatt Weber. He was the husband of Sara Ann Weber for 59 years.

Bob was a Professor and Department Chair of Political Science at Western Maryland College. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Wisconsin and his Masters and PhD at the University of Maryland. Robert also was a veteran, serving with the United States Army from 1956 to 1958.

Bob was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan and got to see his Cubs win the World Series. He was also a Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens and Maryland Terrapins fan. He enjoyed playing golf and traveling with his family. He was a lifelong Democrat.

Surviving in addition to his wife are son David Joseph Weber and wife Alice of Towson; daughters Joan Elizabeth Weber and husband James Kinstle of Westminster; and Barbara Ann Weber and husband Thomas Sterner of Westminster; and grandchildren Dylan Joseph Weber, Brian Robert Weber, Ruby Sara Kinstle, Isabella Weber Sterner, and Taj Weber Sterner. He was predeceased by sisters Virginia Weber Zaleski and Barbara Jean Kannapinn.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring.

Beloved husband of 33 years to Carolyn McCowan Meeks

Dearest son of the late Roger R. Meeks, Sr and late Audrey B. (Murray) Meeks.

Devoted father of Melissa M. and husband Michael Hartzell of Finksburg and Justin W. Meeks of Sykesville.

Dear brother of Michele and husband Dennis Leppert of Westminster.

Devoted Pops to his little buddy Logan Michael Hartzell.

Loving uncle of Todd and wife Jen Leppert, and Jeff Leppert.

Loving great-uncle of Tyler, Makenzie, Danielle, and Brooke. Also survived by numerous members of the McCowan family.

Capt. Meeks began his career with the Maryland State Police in 1981. He was a proud member of MSP S.T.A.T.E. Team. Retired from Homeland Security as an Investigator. He loved to travel with friends and family and was a Mustang Enthusiast.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 3 to 5 and 6 to 9 PM at BURRIER-QUEEN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, P.A (Beside S. Carroll High), 1212 W. Old Liberty Rd. Winfield, MD.

Mount Airy Council President Hobbs was a faithful and selfless public servant who served his community, the Mount Airy Vol. Fire Dept., Carroll Hospital, Carroll Community College, the greater Carroll County community and the state of Maryland with enormous honor and distinction. His passing is a great loss. The mantle is now passed to us to try and build upon his accomplishments and continue his legacy. President Hobbs, your watch is over we will try to take it from here, you duty is done here. God has your place in heaven. Our heart and prayers go out to his family, colleagues, and friends. Mr. R. Delaine Hobbs, Jr., 81, of Mount Airy, Md., passed away Thursday May 12, 2016 surrounded by his family, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was a well-known community leader, business owner and devoted family man. He lived to serve the greater good of others.

Born October 24, 1934 in Frederick, Md. He was a son of the late Reginald Delaine Sr., and Helen Gertrude Houff Hobbs.

Delaine attended the University of Maryland as a Business Major. He was First Chair Trombonist in the University of Maryland Marching Band. He also attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music with a full scholarship; and the New York Institute of Photography.

He owned and operated several Mount Airy businesses - People's Lumber & Supply Company, Inc., Shops of Yesteryear, Inc. and Delaine Hobbs Photography Studio.

He bred champion English Springer Spaniels, he played in the Browningsville Band, as well as having his own band called the "Blue Notes"

Delaine was a member of the Mount Airy Town Council for 36 years from 1966 - 2002, serving as Secretary from 1966-1988, and President 1988-2002. His nine consecutive four year terms made him the third longest elected official to hold office in a municipality in Maryland history.

A member of the Carroll Community College Board of Trustees for 22 years from 1993 - 2015. He was appointed to the board by four consecutive Maryland Governors. He received an honorary doctorate degree, and in 2015 the Carroll County Commissioners honored him for his years of service on the board.

Delaine was President of the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department for an unprecedented 17 years.

A long-time member of the Mount Airy Rotary Club where he was awarded the Paul E. Harris Fellow Award by his peers.

A lifetime member of the Carroll County Hospital Board.

He was an inaugural inductee into Maryland's Municipal Hall of Fame; and in 2000 he was inducted into the Mount Airy Hall of Fame.

In June 2013 he was honored by the Mayor and Mount Airy Town Council commemorating his years of dedicated service to the town. A portrait and plaque were unveiled at the Town Hall where they will be permanently displayed.

Delaine was a longtime member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Mount Airy and a current member of New Market United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife Mary Ann Hobbs; two children: Scott Delaine Hobbs and his wife Evelyn; and Heather Ann Hobbs Michael and her husband Patrick, and three grandchildren: Cameron Michael, Megan Hobbs and Logan Michael. He was preceded in death by his daughter Kristen Lynn Hobbs.

In honor of R. Delaine Hobbs' 36 years of service on the Mount Airy Town Council, Mayor Patrick Rockinberg has ordered that all flags flown on Mount Airy town property be lowered to half- staff beginning at sunrise on Friday, May 13, 2016 until his interment.

Friends may call 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 16, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home. 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, Maryland.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 17 at New Market United Methodist Church, 5501 Old New Market Road, New Market, Maryland 21774. Reverend Scott Clawson, will officiate. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions in Mr. Hobbs' name to New Market United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, and mailed to Post Office Box 111, New Market, Maryland 21774 –

Dr. Griswold was a fixture at the Westminster United Methodist Church. I grew up in the Westminster United Methodist Church and spent much of my childhood, going back to the 1950s, at Western Maryland College – now McDaniel. I have the vaguest memories of Old Main…. Up until the early 1970s, the college was affiliated with the Methodist Church. I was part of the first summer church camps that were integrated at the college. And I have fond memories of talking with Dr. Ensor about the integration of the college.

I have very clear and fond memories of Dr. Griswold. In addition to my memories of Dr. Griswold at church and up at the college, he was also the dad of a Westminster High School Class of 1971 classmate.

He was very kind and always had time for those of us who had a keen interest in the college and the academic – and religious worldview. I was especially intrigued with his films – and his interest in traveling and documenting his travels.

I use many things I learned from Dr. Griswold – to this day. We should never forget the folks who went before us and paved the way for the infrastructure and community we enjoy today.

I had saved a place in my writing schedule to write about him upon the anniversary of his death, but once again, this year, current events have overtaken that opportunity. Perhaps I’ll do it anyway out of linear sequence. I’m not much a fan of linear history anyway. Just saying. God Bless you and your work, Dr. Griswold…..

Services for L. Earl Griswold, retired chairman of the sociology department at Western Maryland College, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Westminster United Methodist Church.

Dr. Griswold, who was 71, died Thursday after an apparent heart attack at his home in Westminster. He retired five years ago as chairman of the sociology department, and had taught courses in anthropology at the college since 1956.

In the 1970s, he made films, many of them on deafness and others on anthropological research in conjunction with the college, and also promotional films for Carroll County and other Maryland subdivisions.

In 1972, one of the films on deafness, "They Grow in Silence," won an award from the Public Broadcasting System. The college for many years has had an extensive degree program accommodating deaf students.

During World War II, he flew B-17s in Europe for the Army Air Corps. He was a psychological warfare officer for the Air Force during the Korean War.

I recently learned that my distant relative, Robert Warner died on Jan. 23, 2016 of an aneurysm in Ocean City at the age of 75.

Mr. Warfield attended Western Maryland College, now McDaniel, where I had the pleasure of enjoying his company on a number of occasions, including the dedication of the Warfield Tennis Courts on October 29, 2005.

I also served with him on the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund committee in the early 2000s when I was an elected official with the city of Westminster. We were both appointed by our friend, Gov. Robert L. Erhlich.

We were distant relatives. We both descended from one of five Warfield brothers that settled in central-Maryland in the 1600s, in the area we know today where Montgomery, Howard, Frederick, and Carroll County meet. According to unsubstantiated oral tradition, we could both trace our ancestry back to Gov. Edwin Warfield, 1904-1908 (Democrat.)

Mr. Robert was bright and charming, and had a sense of old-school grace and manners that was compelling and charismatic. Above all, not only was he quite capable and competent, he was nice.

Robert E. Warfield Sr., a former co-owner of an Ocean City real estate firm and a McDaniel College trustee, died of an aneurysm Jan. 23 at his Ocean City home. He was 75.

Born in Silver Spring, he was the son of Lt. Col. William Edwin Warfield, who died in the invasion of Normandy in 1944, and Esther Stanley.

He was a Montgomery Blair High School graduate and received a degree in economics from Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College. He played football and golf, and wrestled. He was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Tau fraternity.

He met his future wife, Margaret Ann "Peggy" Hoey, at a sock hop during their freshman year.

"We've been dancing ever since," she said. "Bobby always did the right thing."

Mr. Warfield served as a second lieutenant in the Army and was assigned to its 29th Division in Korea.
