The humanitarian disaster that followed the 1927 Great Mississippi Flood propelled Robert Russa Moton, the president of a small college, into the national spotlight. This same prominent political leader also helped Franklin Roosevelt's Democratic Party win the 1932 presidential election.

Despite a dire weather forecast earlier this month, we dodged a weather bullet when Hurricane Joaquin stayed out to sea.

In a rehearsal for the upcoming dramas that will take place in Maryland this winter when snow is predicted; events were cancelled, emergencies declared, mothers gathered their children, and folks took to the streets to forage for materials to make bad weather omelets – milk, bread, eggs, extra batteries and toilet paper.

In the end, the weather did turn ugly, but not from the hurricane or a visit from Hell’s Nebulae, but rather from a strong nor'easter that pelted much of Maryland with high winds, heavy rains and the threat of flooding.

As winter approaches Nor'easter often cause many to think of heavy snowstorms. But during the height of the media frenzy over Joaquin, several media outlets raised the memories of when the August 1933 storm cut the inlet just below Ocean City. Sun writer, Chris Guy explained it well in an August 23, 2003 account, “On the morning of Aug. 23, Ocean City residents awoke to discover that the record tide and rainfall that flooded coastal bays had combined with the storm's winds to cut a 50-foot gash through the island's lowest point, severing the resort from Assateague Island…”

Shortly after we dodged the Zombie apocalypse weather event, one reader in the grocery store checkout line still had that wide-eyed look like she was about to be abducted by space aliens as she asked if Carroll County has ever – could ever, have flooding like what South Carolina recently experienced. “That couldn’t possible ever happen here could it,” she asked breathlessly.

She was referring to the epic flooding that has just taken place in South Carolina that weather professionals and state Gov. Nikki Haley, are calling a ‘1,000-year flood’ terminology.

I answered calmly, “What do Carroll County, Led Zeppelin, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and one of the worst natural disasters in American history all have in common? In the end, we are all going to Chicago… ‘

South Carolina was not so lucky. The national news media has carried a number of stories about flooding there that was so bad that Gov. Nikki Haley said, "We are at a 1,000-year level of rain," according to CNN.

While perhaps not to those historic levels, throughout its history Carroll County has had its fair share of bad floods…

On Monday, July 30, 1923, a flood "swept down the valleys, flooding hundreds of homes … and causing great property damage," in southern Carroll Co. according to an Aug. 3, 1923 article in the Democratic Advocate newspaper.

Research for the Historical Society of Carroll Co. by historian Mary Ann Ashcraft indicates that another flood on July 24, 1868, destroyed much of Sykesville.

The devastating historic floods that followed Hurricane Agnes beginning on June 21, 1972 and Hurricane Eloise on Sept. 26, 1975 destroyed bridges, roads and homes through Carroll Co.

However, it is another flood; one that took place in 1927, which had a profound socio-political effect on American history and has a Carroll connection, though it did not even take place in Carroll County…

Marie Mary Geiman of Manchester, Maryland 1918 - 2015 Obituary

Marie Mary Geiman

Born: September 27, 1918

Died: October 24, 2015

Marie Mary Geiman, age 97 of Hanover, PA, died Saturday Oct. 24, 2015 at the Hanover Hospital in Hanover, PA, surrounded by her family.

Born Sept. 27, 1918 in Manchester, she was the daughter of the late Clayton M. and Bertha Mae Miller Black. She was the wife of the late Lavere Wilbert Geiman who died July 31, 2000.

Years ago, she worked at the Jacob Brothers Sewing Factory in Manchester, MD. She was a life member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, enjoyed eating out and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Little and Pearl Moffitt and husband Paul all of Hanover, PA., grandchildren, Gregory, Donald, Christopher and Jeffrey, siblings, Margaret McCullough of Manchester, her twin, Miriam Thompson of Hampstead, MD and 14 great grandchildren.

She is predeceased by siblings, Hilda Hesson, Ruby Davis, Cletus, Maurice and Ritchie Black.

The family will receive friends at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL P.A., 3296 Charmil Dr., Manchester, MD on Tuesday Oct. 27, 2015 from 6-8 pm. and on Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 3184 Church St., Manchester, MD from 10 am. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00am with the Rev. Christopher Litton officiating.

Interment will be in the Old Lutheran Cemetery, Manchester, MD.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 739, Manchester, MD 21102.

Herbert R. Shipley, 89, of Westminster, died Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Herbert R. Shipley, 89, of Westminster, died Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at home. Born October 14, 1926 in Carroll County he was the son of the late Harvey R. Shipley and Mamie Gist Shipley. Survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruth E. Poole Shipley.

He was the owner of Shipley Transport which he founded in 1980. He was a truck driver all his life and actively supported the Maryland Motor Truck Assoc. He was an active and lifelong member of Deer Park United Methodist Church. He served on numerous committees and was a trustee on the building committee and cemetery board. He was active in the Shipley’s of Maryland, lifelong Orioles fan and enjoyed going to games. He was a lifelong supporter of the Carroll County 4H Fair cake auction.

Besides his wife he is survived by 3 children, Barbara S. Cober and husband Donald of Ellicott City, Raymond E. Shipley and wife Brenda K. of Westminster, Joyce E. Sanders and husband Jeff of Waynesboro, PA., brothers Floyd K. Shipley and wife Janice of Westminster, H. Larry Shipley and wife Barbara of Westminster and sister-in-law Meriam Shipley of Hampstead. Also survived by 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a grandson Scott E. Shipley and a brother Norman E. Shipley.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 25, 2015, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster and at the church on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Deer Park United Methodist Church, 2205 Sykesville Rd., Westminster, with his Pastor Rev. Pat Dols officiating. Interment will be in Deer Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Deer Park United Methodist Church, 2205 Sykesville Rd., Westminster, MD 21157 or Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.

Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland; October 19, 2015

On Monday, October 19, 2015, at approximately 3:52 PM, Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the Liberty Gas Station, 23 Carroll Plaza, Westminster, for the report of a robbery. Deputies were informed that 2 black males, both believed to be in their 20's, entered the store and displayed a handgun and a "Taser". The two suspects then took an undisclosed amount of money and other items from the store and fled on foot.

An employee of the store reported that the "taser" was used on him, but no injuries were sustained from this incident.

Carroll County Sheriff's Deputies, Maryland State Police Troopers and a MSP Bloodhound all took part in the search for the suspects, but at this time, they have not been located.

Suspect #1 is described as a black male, 6' - 6' 5" tall, medium build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with "Baltimore Ravens" on the front, black pants with lettering down the right leg, black shoes, black ski mask, and armed with a "Taser" type device.

Suspect #2 is described as a black male, 5' 10" - 6' tall, medium build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt under a dark colored jacket / sweatshirt, black pants, black shoes, black ski mask, and armed with a semi-automatic handgun.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office investigation continues... Anyone with information about this incident are asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 410-386-2900, or the Anonymous TIPS Hotline at 1-888-399-TIPP.

For those who have missed the reporting of Penny Riordan, the former education reporter for in the Carroll County Times, do not despair.

She is still with the paper; however she has become the editor of the newspaper’s “Carroll Seniors” publication.

The November 2008 edition of the paper has a great deal of excellent content on the Great Depression, which has certainly been in the forefront of the news these days as the nation continues to wrangle with economic turmoil.

Unfortunately, the content is not online. So you will have to walk on your feet to a nearby hungry store and pick up a copy at a newsstand. How quaint.

I recently grabbed a copy and revisited the joys of actually holding a newspaper in my hand as I poured over the excellent writing… You should do likewise. It is some great reading…

But for those who lived through the great depression, things going on in the economy today just don’t quite compare.”

Carroll Seniors is a free publication distributed by the Carroll County Times. It is produced by Penny Riordan, the former education reporter for the Times.

The Carroll County State's Attorney's Office is warning residents about a utility bill payment scam targeting both businesses and individual residents.

The Economic Crimes Unit of the state's attorney's office has received information about several recent incidents in which a caller tells the victim their BGE bills have not been paid, and threatens service will be disconnected if immediate payment isn't made, according to a new release from State's Attorney Brian DeLeonardo. The caller then requests payment through a reloadable credit card.

The Bible is a document written by human beings who tried to recognize what God was doing in their lives. But it’s not inerrant. Interestingly, if the Bible were inerrant you would think it would tell us. It simply doesn’t use those terms. The Bible never says, “Hi! I’m the Bible. I’m the inerrant Word of God. Believe in me!”

There are disagreements that run throughout the Bible. Those disagreements are one of the things that I love about the Bible! The Bible models for us how to wrestle with God and ask questions about faith.

The Bible contains human testimony about how God works in the world, but it is not God’s inerrant Word. The Bible points beyond itself to God, and in the New Testament, to the God revealed in Jesus. The Bible even claims that Jesus is the Word of God, not the Bible itself.

Jesus claimed that the scriptures are limited. You cannot have eternal life by believing in the Bible. In fact, when we elevate the Bible above God, it blocks us from our only access to eternal life.

The Bible is important, but we are not Biblians. We are Christians, called to come to Jesus.

That’s why you should run from “Bible believing churches.” Churches aren’t meant to believe in the Bible. They are meant to believe in the God revealed through Jesus.
