Report of the Presiding Bishop - ELCA Churchwide Assembly in New Orleans August 8-13, 2016

Report of the Presiding Bishop - ELCA Churchwide Assembly in New Orleans August 8-13, 2016

Published on Aug 12, 2016: Bishop Eaton delivers an inspiring message as her Report from the Presiding Bishop to the ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Eaton says, “In baptism we have all been marked with the cross of Christ, and are all called not to run away, but to run to those dark and deadly places, bringing the light and life of Christ.”

A few assorted miscellaneous takeaways….

It is almost as if Jesus has become wallpaper…

We can’t form relations with other denominations or other religions if we are not clear about who we are.

We are ‘both – and,’ and not ‘either – or.’

Lutherans have a distinctive voice…

Who knew we had a fight song…. What is our fight song? “A Mighty Fortress is our God.”

What is our chant? ‘Justified by Grace.’

Go in peace serve the Lord. Not to see people as problems to be solved.

24:55 thanking first responders for our day of service falls on Sept. 11, 2016 - God’s Work Our Hands Sunday – the fifteenth anniversary of 9/11.

There are more Muslims in this country than ELCA Lutherans

The synod is us. Scheduled Rostered Leaders gathering in Atlanta GA. August 7-10, 2017

We need to reclaim the word evangelical…. The good news. We no longer have this privileged spot in society. We are a missionary church once again. There are so many options now on Sunday morning. The Roman Empire did not give Christians Sundays off. It is not our fault that the world has changed.

Saint Paul was a proto-Lutheran.

White privilege – Benefits of the GI Bill. Some aspects of the GI Bill not available for African-Americans. Around 41:00. We did not create it. We inherited it. But we can change it. Pastors when you get push-back about this. Blame it on me.

Future … God is calling us toward … Future Directions Paper … Ministry site profile.

https://www.elca.org/future: The ELCA is a young church at only 28 years old. It is a good time to take a look at where we are as God’s people and try to understand what God has in store for us. And we think it is an exciting time to be looking forward together as we approach the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017.

We want to create a vision for the future ELCA – as a church with solid foundations sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ and making a difference in the world locally and globally. And as a church that we can be proud to pass on to our children.

We want to discover how we can continue to faithfully serve God’s mission in the years ahead and reach a shared understanding among church leaders about the ministries that are most important.

And we want to assess whether the structures that were set up for this church are right for the future, and as part of this consider how we use our resources in the best possible way. There are many challenges.

God is not finished with us yet….

Let’s go church.

NEW WINDSOR HERITAGE ANNOUNCES 2016 SUMMER'S END HOME & GARDEN TOUR

New Windsor Heritage is sponsoring a Summer's End Home and Garden Tour on September 10, 2016 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event features five historic homes and gardens, a contemporary home with extensive plantings, a restored 1854 school house, an 18th century log house, and a jewel of an 1897 church. Each site will include plein air artists working in a variety of media, and Master Gardeners will be on-hand to answer questions about the gardens on tour and attendees’ own trees, shrubs, and plants.

Homes include an 1813 high-style, Federal era, three story bank house/villa and an early 19th century Piedmont Plantation house. Owners and docents will be on-hand to share each house's history. A special attraction is the Springdale School where a teacher and students in period costumes will conduct lessons derived from 19th century textbooks.

Each visitor will receive a tour booklet containing descriptions of the homes and gardens and a map to the sites. The booklet will serve as a ticket to all of the locations. Admission is $15 per person, and children under 12 are free.

Fees may be paid on the day of the tour starting at 12:45 p.m. at the New Windsor Heritage Museum, 207 Main Street, right next to New Windsor State Bank. Drinks, snacks, and rest room facilities will be available.

For additional information about the tour and the houses and gardens featured, please contact Dori or Frank Batavick at 410-848-5263.

Saturday evening, August 20, 2016, our friends from France visited the Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 - after we visited the Giant grocery store. When Caroline and visit other countries, we always want to visit grocery stores and fire stations. Apparently Cora Deruette, Nathalie Pouteau de Brucan, and Guillemette Pouteau de Brucan share our interest in grocery stores and enjoyed our visit to the fire station. The firefighters at the station were really good hosts and expressed an interest in the three French girls joining the fire company. Just saying.

Sunday, August 21, 2016. 8:45 am service at St. John Catholic Church, Westminster Md. The new priest, Father Mark is awesome.

Father Mark's message this morning was to discuss the Olympics, the number of metals won by  the nations with the highest metal count - and the accomplishments of the athletes. Can you imagine what it would be like if we gave all the athletes a certificate of participation? As a member of the church, we cannot simply just show up and get a participation trophy. Keep your eyes on the prize, Jesus Christ. When did mediocre become good enough? We have to become the best version of ourselves.

We have to stop the participation trophy complex from running our lives. We run the race to win. We cannot win the race if we get a trophy for just showing up.

Former mayor breaking rocks on a bread and water diet

Breaking rocks on a bread and water diet

August 17, 2016

Today, the former mayor may be found breaking rocks on a bread and water diet. Wed. Aug. 17, 2016

According to an article, “The Tramp Problem in Cities” in Vol. 4, No. 3 edition of “City Government - Municipal Journal and Public Works,”

The article begins by explaining, “An inquiry from Hon. Peter J. Carolus, judge of the police court of St. Joseph, Mo., to the League of American Municipalities, in regard to the tramp problem, has brought forth he following information and suggestions:

[…]

Mayor Robert J. Saltsman, Erie, Pa. reports “Every city ought to have a work-house or stone pile for tramps or vagrants; we have mothing of the sort, but work our tramps in summer cleaning the streets. If we could get our county commissioners to join us we would build a work-house at once.”

F. G. Pierce, the mayor of Marshalltown, Ia. says, “We consider the tramp a good thing… We give any person who applies to any of the police officers one night’s lodging in the station house, and if the tramp is found in the city the next night he is run and given five days on bread and water.

“In the summer time we work the tramps on a small city park under way to completion. We find, however, that there is only one way to deal with this question, and it is a very good solution to the question, and that is the bread and water diet. Just as long as cities give tramps a good lodging and good meals they will be troubled, and just as soon as they begin to give them bread the bread and water diet they will give that city a wide berth. I assure you.”
