Westminster Md. Sr. High School Class of 1971 classmate Melvin Warren Heartley, Sr., 63

Dru Ann Boyd Click and I have been messaging back and forth, and we have bad news for our classmates at Westminster High School – especially the class of 1971. Melvin Warren Heartley, Sr., 63, of Falling Waters, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Berkeley Medical Center.

The obituary does not have a picture of Mel. Let me grab one from the yearbook….

+++++++++++++++++++

According to Dru Ann Click, who attended the funeral, “Just got back from WV and the most unusual funeral ever - all Pink Floyd Songs. Total service was 10 min. Sang ‘Wish u were here’ at grave side. Family all had on Pink Floyd T shirts.”

You know that sounds like our class. Just saying….

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

(Chaplain Kevin Dayhoff) The Westminster High School Class of 1971 extends our sympathy and condolences to the friends, family and loved-ones of our classmate Mel. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this very difficult time.

Those we love don't go away. They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear.

May memories of happy times sustain us, the support of family and friends comfort us, and may God's love embrace you and your family and bring you peace.

Praying for you and your family. So sorry for loss. You and the family are in our prayers. We are all singing:

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.

Wish you were here.

Denver Fire Department: Leadership So Everyone Goes Home

Denver Fire Department: Leadership So Everyone Goes Home

Westminster Fire Engine and Hose Co. No. 1 – the training never stops.

March 28, 2017

Published on Jun 9, 2014: Denver firefighters opened their doors and their hearts to share painful lessons to help improve firefighter safety across the country and around the world. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) has released Denver Fire Department: Leadership So Everyone Goes Home, a documentary highlighting the department's efforts to make improvements after the tragic loss of three Denver firefighters over a six-year period.

The documentary, produced by STATter911 Communications in association with Greg Guise Media and PC Productions, focuses on the line-of-duty-deaths of Firefighter Robert Crump in 2000, Assistant Chief Charles Drennan Jr. in 2001, and Lt. Richard Montoya in 2006. Members of the department, from the rank of firefighter up to the fire chief, share their insights into the loss of these three men and talk about other incidents where Denver firefighters have been seriously injured.

1. Introduction

2. Personal Safety – seat belts et al…. History of a past accident

3. Personal Size-up. Individual Size-up. History of a flash flood LODD

4. Behavioral health - peer support program

5. A culture of safety. No big deal, it is just a house fire. Nothing is routine. LODD. There is no routine call. What has changed? You need to be aware of what is going on?

6. Safety Leadership – You can’t teach someone experience. Tough decisions are not always popular. Offensive to defensive. Denver’s Station 8 – 10,000 calls a year. 25 calls a day. Safety is paramount.

Everyone Goes Home

March 26, 2014: "Mother's Restaurant" in New Orleans, Louisiana. It's a Marine Corps thing.

"Mother's Restaurant" in New Orleans, Louisiana. It's a Marine Corps thing. Semper Fi. We loved it. Convenient to downtown. We walked everywhere. The food was great. The service was good and the place had real character. I felt like we part of history. 26Mar2014

Mother’s restaurant New Orleans Louisiana
401 Poydras St
New Orleans, Louisiana
(504) 523-9656
Authentic N'Awlins home-style cooking since 1938. The Amato family welcomes you for a taste of tradition.

Mother’s Restaurant opened its doors in 1938 on Poydras Street’s “Restaurant Row”, situated between a thriving waterfront and the courthouse. Owners Simon and Mary (Mother) Landry and his large family cooked up po’ boys for lines of longshoremen and laborers, newspapermen and attorneys.

During and after World War II, Mother’s became a local hang-out for “the few and the proud” – the U.S. Marine Corps. The Marine spirit was in the family – five of the seven Landry children (five sons and two daughters) joined the Marine Corps. Francis Landry was the first woman in Louisiana to be accepted into the Corps. This special association with the Marines earned Mother’s the title of “TUN Tavern New Orleans” in the late ’60s. The original TUN tavern was the official birthplace of the Marines during the Revolutionary War.

Mother’s is not just a part of this great American tradition, but also stands as a uniquely New Orleans institution. The likes of other family-owned local businesses such as D.H. Holmes Department Stores, K&B Drug Stores, MacKenzie’s Bakery, and Werlein’s Music have all departed from the landscape, while Mother’s Restaurant has not only remained almost exactly the same, but has flourished.

In 1986, the Jerry and John Amato bought Mother’s from the Landry’s sons Jacques and Eddie. With the changing of the guard, many things were added but nothing, fortunately, lost. Jerry Amato, chef and proprietor, doubled the already dizzying size of the menu. Now traditional New Orleans dishes like jambalaya and Shrimp Creole line-up next to the po’ boys that Mother’s made famous, such as the Ferdi Special and the debris po-boy (for a history of these and other sandwiches on the Fun Facts page). Breakfast, lunch and dinner items are cooked with fresh ingredients and bold, delicious flavor.

You will still see longshoremen in boots and you’ll find plenty of locals rubbing elbows in line with visitors, veterans, politicians and movie stars. Mother’s remains true to its working class origins. Nobody gets treated better (or worse) than anybody else. As Jerry Amato says, “Everybody gets fed. Everybody comes back.”

So go ahead, join ranks with the not-so-few, but intensely proud – the Mother’s crowd.
