Film: Alice's Ordinary People at the Carroll Arts Center, Monday, October 16 at 7:00 pm.

The documentary tells the story of Alice Tregay, a woman from Chicago who confronted injustice in her community by joining Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in marches for fair housing, desegregation in Chicago Public Schools

In Honor of National Work and Family Month, the Carroll County Public Library presents, in partnership with Carroll Citizens for Racial Equality, The Community Media Center of Carroll County and the NAACP Carroll County, will present a free screening of Alice's Ordinary People with filmmaker Craig Dudnick at the Carroll Arts Center, Monday, October 16 at 7:00 pm.

ABOUT THE FILM

Born in 1929, civil rights activist Alice Tregay was best known for fighting segregation in Chicago schools. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King in the 1960s to improve educational opportunities for blacks. She directed local and national voter registration campaigns under Operation Breadbasket, which worked to improve job opportunities for African Americans. In the 1990s, she marched in Washington D.C. to demand that Congress and the White House create jobs.

She received many prestigious awards for her outstanding work in civil rights and community service, most notably one presented in March of 2004 by young Illinois State Senator Barack Obama, who would become the 44th President of the United States and the first African American to hold that office.

The screening will take place at the Carroll County Arts Center, 91 West Main Street, Westminster, MD. A Celebrating America program.

Carroll Lutheran Village commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation by planting trees

Westminster Md. - Last month, on September 13, 2017, Carroll Lutheran Village held a tree planting ceremony on the Mission Square near the center of the sprawling retirement complex, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation which began in Germany in 1517.

The Rev. William G. Gohl, Bishop of the DE-MD Synod of the ELCA officiated, and was joined by The Rev. Dr. Rev. Fred Eckhardt, Carroll Lutheran Village Chaplain Jimmie Schwartz, Deacon Laura Heller, the coordinator of the Creation Care Ministry of the Delaware-Maryland Synod, Carroll Lutheran Village Associate Chaplain Deacon Don Myers, and Justin Durboraw, local funeral director, Gettysburg Lutheran College roommate of Bishop Gohl.

At the ceremony, Carroll Lutheran Village resident Phil Hooks played an original musical composition on the Alpine Horn, titled, “Fanfare to a Tree.” Later in the program, Hooks played Sousa marches while folks in attendance enjoyed a root beer and soft pretzel reception. Photos by Kevin Dayhoff.

At the 25th annual Westminster Urban and Community Forestry Workshop

At the 25th annual Westminster Urban and Community Forestry Workshop took place at the Westminster Fire Department on Friday, October 6, 2017.

Dr. Bruce Fraederich presented the latest research in the goals and objectives of pruning systems.

A regulatory update was presented by Veronica Johnson, from the Maryland Department of Agriculture at the 25th annual Westminster Urban and Community Forestry Workshop took place at the Westminster Fire Department on Friday, October 6, 2017.

An update on insect pests and problems was presented by Dr. Mike Raupp, University of Maryland.

According to the City of Westminster and the Westminster Tree Commission, the workshop was, "Presented by Bartlett Tree Experts, the Westminster Tree Commission, and the City of Westminster.

"The annual workshop was established with the goal of improving the skills of arborists, foresters, gardeners, and landscapers from government agencies. To this end, the one day event brings in industry experts from around the country to provide professional training and education. State Foresters and private arborists and foresters are welcomed as well.

"All eligible attendees receive Maryland Pesticide Applicator--Full Recertification and Continuing Education Credits from SA (International Society of Arborists) and the American Society of Foresters. Offering these re-certification and continuing education credits is an ongoing service which recognizes the professional achievements of the attendees."

Lonely is the runner who comes upon a truck on the Wakefield Valley Trail that obviously took a wrong turn off the Baltimore Beltway. Just saying. Thurs. Sept. 21, 2017

Mr. Truck looks like it is emerging from a brief visit to the woods and returning to the trail.

Over the years, I have seen many things on the Wakefield Valley Trail. Large bunnies, and spacecrafts, and attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate… Oh, sorry. That's another story for another time…

I really did see the truck. Really I did.

And they support law enforcement and military. I also really liked the idea that they gave away free Bibles at the door. And I witnessed several folks picking,through the Bibles, and carrying them out the door with them.

I found this in an upper cupboard in the family kitchen. I was fascinated that the ingredients listed on the label read, "Prepared with sugar and water; phosphoric acid, caffeine, extractives from coca leaves (cocaine removed) and cola nuts, and other flavoring materials, colored with caramel."

Sadly there is no date on the bottle anywhere.

Mexican Folk Dance Group to perform at the Carroll Arts Center Sept. 16, 2017

The Carroll County Arts Council is pleased to host Bailes de Mi Tierra (Dances of My Land) on Saturday, September 16 at 7 pm. Celebrate Mexican Independence Day with a live performance by this talented dance troupe who are ambassadors of the Latino Community. Their colorful costumes and lively music provide a rich representation of Mexican heritage and traditions.

Bailes de Mi Tierra’s mission is to preserve, promote, and present Mexican traditions through music, dance, and folklore. Accompanied with lively sounds of Mexican music, their repertoire includes vibrant dances from 6 regions of Mexico; Sinaloa, Jalisco, Veracruz, Norte (which includes dances from Chihuahua, and Tamaulipas), Chiapas, and tropical dances such as Cha-Cha-Cha & Cumbia.

Now in its 9th year, the group has performed in various venues throughout Baltimore and surrounding communities of Ellicott City, Columbia, and Washington, D.C. Bailes de Mi Tierra not only serves as ambassadors of the Mexican community but the entire Latino community of Baltimore by showcasing and demonstrating the beauty and richness that Latinos bring to Baltimore and beyond.

Westminster Colorado is huge, both in size and population. There are approximately 100,000 folks living here, just north of Denver, in what appears, at first impression, to be in reclaimed desert, within sight of the Rocky Mountains.

Of course, Mr. Walters is a local Westminster, Md. artist. Caroline and I visited the elks featured in this sculpture display at Reed St. and Walnut Creek, when they were being created in Westminster Md.

The sculptures are magnificent.

“Murder and Mayhem in Carroll County” - Historical Society of Carroll County Box Lunch Talk for August 15, 2017 by Kevin Dayhoff

The next Historical Society of Carroll County Box Lunch Talk is next Tuesday on August 15, 2017 at 1 p.m. in Grace Hall at Grace Lutheran Church at 21 Carroll Street. The talk is on “Murder and Mayhem in Carroll County.”

Admission to the Box Lunch Talk is $3 for members and $7 for non-members. The price of admission includes a small selection of beverages and dessert.

Ever since Biblical times when Cain committed the first murder when he killed his brother Able, crime, murder, and mayhem has been the focus of an unexplained fascination of any society and Carroll County is no different. Kevin Dayhoff reports upon many of the high crimes and misdemeanors that have stained the history of the county over the years.

From 1859 to 1916 three people were hanged in Westminster for heinous murders. Rebecca McCormack killed a 13-year-old boy by stabbing him with a pitchfork. She was convicted of murder and hanged in June 1859 outside the jail. She was the first person hanged in Carroll County, and the only woman ever to have been executed here. Joseph Davis was hanged in 1874, and Solomon Sudler, a 16-year-old, was hanged in 1916.

Over the years, not everyone liked the entertainment provided at the Odd Fellow’s Hall in Westminster. Around the time of the American Civil War a show at the hall featured unflattering impressions of Lincoln, Grant and other national leaders. The next day morning, the decapitated body of the entertainer was found in a rear stable.

Statewide, many folks are not aware that Maryland had a brief spell of dealing with witches long before the famous Salem witchcraft trials in 1692. The earliest cases in Maryland “involved the hanging of women assumed to be witches while aboard ships traveling from England to the colonies in 1654 and 1658.”

In April 1865 the editor of the Western Maryland Democrat, Joseph Shaw, was lynched in Westminster at the corner of Anchor and West Main Street for an editorial that he had published in the paper just days before President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14th 1865. "Joseph Shaw, the outspoken, pro-southern newspaperman, was Carroll County's final casualty of the war."

It might be noted, that murdering editors is on the disapproved behavior list in Westminster. You can complain and mutter epitaphs – but you can’t harm them.
