Caroline, and I joined many friends, colleagues, and community leaders, and the fantastic staff of the Carroll Co. Public Library for a celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Walter H. Davis’ contributions to our community.

Jennifer Boatman also produced an excellent video in which local folks shared their memories of the Davis Library. The video debuted at the Davis Day ceremonies today, just after lunch as approximately 45 folks braved a spring shower and chilly temperatures to attend the historic downtown Westminster event; one of many recently developed by the Carroll County Public Library.

Many could not agree more with what Del. Susan Krebs said on her Facebook page, “Celebrated Davis Day at the Westminster library, honoring Walter H. Davis who started the first public library in Carroll County in 1951. What a legacy he left to Carroll Countians!”

Last night, Sat. April 30, 2016, Caroline and I really enjoyed the Historical Society of Carroll County Gala.

We joined Bernie Jones and his wife, and Charles and Virginia Harrison at our table. We danced the night away at one of the better benefit events we have attended in recent memory. We tip our cowboy hats to Historical Society for a wonderful evening and to Becky and Nick Herrick for being excellent hosts.

“18^th annual Main Street Mile draws field of nearly 300 to downtown Westminster.”

Nearly 300 people, ages 4 to 75, ran down Main Street for the 18th annual Main Street Mile Wednesday night.

Medals and ice cream sundaes piled high with toppings were plentiful. So were red faces, shouts of cheer and calls of ''Your time ... what was your time?"

"When I came down to the finish line, it felt like my feet were burning," said 9-year-old Laura Getty, daughter of Del. Joseph M. Getty. Like many, the Gettys made the mile run a family affair. Madison, 4, the youngest of the participants, crossed the finish line last with her father in a time of 13:23:04. Her sister, Emma, and brothers, Justis, and Nathan Getty, also participated.

Andrew Glaser, a first-grader at Linton Springs Elementary School, took a slow, chat-while you-jog pace. His mother, Laura Fondi, jogged barefoot on the sidewalk beside him.

"These are the only shoes I had," she said, adding that there was little time between work and the Main Street Mile. Her other son, Michael, a fourth-grader at the same school, raced ahead and promised to meet at the finish line.

Main Street Mile is sponsored by the Westminster Road Runners Club. It attracts runners from all over the state because the downhill slope offers an opportunity for record times. "The run went really well. More people pre-registered, we moved registration to the new fire hall, and everything ran smoothly," said Linda Galinaitis, treasurer and a member of the board of directors for WRRC.

Steve and I were already victims of them a couple months ago thinking they were legit but were not! They tried again yesterday and I told them I would be recording the call and they immediately hung up. They then tried to call back last night and I believe he recognized my voice and immediately hung up the phone. They've also tried contacting my mom several times this past week as well! A family member returned to Inova Fairfax Hospital in northern Virginia for a follow-up procedure today.

Wed. April 27, 2016 a family member returned to Inova Fairfax Hospital in northern Virginia for a follow-up procedure today.

She also took the opportunity to have a reunion with many of the awesome nurses in the ICU unit where she spent much of this past Jan. and Feb. We really appreciated the opportunity to thank everyone from the bottom of our heart.

We had an incredibly positive experience with Fairfax Hospital. Not only was her medical care excellent, but everyone there was so nice, friendly and helpful, in spite of the fact that this is a huge, ginormous metropolitan Washington DC medical facility.

Everyone from the administration to the staff to the medical professionals went out if their way to be friendly, and helpful.

Our extended family practically lived there throughout her hospitalization and the hospital staff could not have been more accommodating.

Carroll County volunteer firefighters from throughout the county responded Sunday afternoon to a laundry room fire at “Vetville” in the 100 unit block of Wimert Avenue, near Sullivan Avenue and Route 140 in northwest Westminster.

The complex, known locally as “Vetville,” dates back to 1946, when the housing units were built “by the government for the GIs who are attending or will attend Western Maryland College under the GI Bill of Rights,” according to a newspaper account in the now-defunct Democratic Advocate.

“A one-story construction, set up on cement blocks, with a brick-like celetex finish, they will fill the hopes of many GIs who plan to finish their education with their families. The apartments are made up of living room, two bedrooms, two closets and a kitchen, to be fully equipped with sink, stove and refrigerator…”

It is believed that the last fire occurred in Vetville on November 2, 2003, when, “A two-alarm fire … destroyed a four-unit apartment building in Westminster, but its eight residents, including two children, escaped without injuries,” according to an article in the Baltimore Sun.

Carroll County Public Library - Library History

Library service in Carroll County began in 1863, when the Westminster Public Library was founded by Reverend J. A. Monroe and Dr. Charles Billingslea. The library was supported by membership dues and fines, and was open to the public on Friday afternoons. Relocating over the years from the Odd Fellows Hall to the new Times Building and then to the second floor of the Wantz Building, Westminster Public Library was still a one-room library in the 1940s.

In 1949, Mr. and Mrs. Walter H. Davis announced that they would give a public library building to Westminster and provide an endowment for its support. At that time, the Westminster Public Library turned over its operation and assets to the Davis Library. The Davis Library, housed in a former Methodist church building, was formally dedicated as a library in May, 1951.

In 1958, after ten years of lobbying, a county-wide library system was established, with the Davis Library operating as the central branch. Carroll County's first modern library facility, the Westminster Branch Library, opened at 50 East Main Street in March, 1980. An interior and exterior renovation of the building has been completed.

Dr. Griswold was a fixture at the Westminster United Methodist Church. I grew up in the Westminster United Methodist Church and spent much of my childhood, going back to the 1950s, at Western Maryland College – now McDaniel. I have the vaguest memories of Old Main…. Up until the early 1970s, the college was affiliated with the Methodist Church. I was part of the first summer church camps that were integrated at the college. And I have fond memories of talking with Dr. Ensor about the integration of the college.

I have very clear and fond memories of Dr. Griswold. In addition to my memories of Dr. Griswold at church and up at the college, he was also the dad of a Westminster High School Class of 1971 classmate.

He was very kind and always had time for those of us who had a keen interest in the college and the academic – and religious worldview. I was especially intrigued with his films – and his interest in traveling and documenting his travels.

I use many things I learned from Dr. Griswold – to this day. We should never forget the folks who went before us and paved the way for the infrastructure and community we enjoy today.

I had saved a place in my writing schedule to write about him upon the anniversary of his death, but once again, this year, current events have overtaken that opportunity. Perhaps I’ll do it anyway out of linear sequence. I’m not much a fan of linear history anyway. Just saying. God Bless you and your work, Dr. Griswold…..

Services for L. Earl Griswold, retired chairman of the sociology department at Western Maryland College, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Westminster United Methodist Church.

Dr. Griswold, who was 71, died Thursday after an apparent heart attack at his home in Westminster. He retired five years ago as chairman of the sociology department, and had taught courses in anthropology at the college since 1956.

In the 1970s, he made films, many of them on deafness and others on anthropological research in conjunction with the college, and also promotional films for Carroll County and other Maryland subdivisions.

In 1972, one of the films on deafness, "They Grow in Silence," won an award from the Public Broadcasting System. The college for many years has had an extensive degree program accommodating deaf students.

During World War II, he flew B-17s in Europe for the Army Air Corps. He was a psychological warfare officer for the Air Force during the Korean War.
